CALL TO ORDER The Mohawk College Board of Governors Open Portion meeting was called to order at 6:02 p.m. 2. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS Those in attendance introduced themselves. 3. ADDITIONS/DELETIONS TO THE AGENDA There were no additions/deletions to the agenda. 4. CONFLICT OF INTEREST DECLARATIONS The Chair asked that any Governor wishing to declare a conflict of interest with respect to any item on the agenda do so at this time. 5. PRESENTATIONS There were no presentations. 6. APPROVAL OF PREVIOUS MINUTES 6.1 Minutes of the 363 rd Open Portion Board Meeting of September 8, 2004 It was moved by Brenda Davis and seconded by Sharon Lax that the minutes of the 363 rd Open Portion Board meeting of September 8, 2004 be approved. Carried. (MOTION 363.O.6.1) 7. ACTION ARISING FROM THE PREVIOUS MINUTES There were no action items arising from the previous minutes. 8. DECISION ITEMS There were no decision items to discuss. 9. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS AND REPORTS 10.1 Student Reports (MSA, SAC, MCACES, Alumni) The Students Reports were provided for information. 11. INTERIM FINANCIAL/STAFFING/OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY REPORTS 11.1 Accident/Injury Report The Accident/Injury Report for September 2004 was provided for information.

Page 3 11.2 Staffing Update The full-time staffing report for September 2004 was provided for information. Martin van Zon suggested that the report show the change from one month to the next. 12. COMMUNITY INFORMATION COMMENTS & QUESTIONS 12.1 Members Comments Bryan Adamczyk informed the Board that Keith Bates, a Technologist in the Electrotechnology Department at Stoney Creek Campus, received the Health and Safety Activist Recognition Plaque at the Occupational Health and Safety 25 th Anniversary Commemorative dinner on October 1, 2004. The Chair conveyed the Board s congratulations to Keith Bates on receiving this award. 13. DISCUSSION ITEMS 13.1 PostsecondaryReview Higher Expectations for Higher Education A Discussion Paper and Working Through the Possibilities A lengthy discussion took place on the PostsecondaryReview Higher Expectations for Higher Education A Discussion Paper and the Working Through the Possibilities document. Catherine Drea will draft a response to the report from the comments made by Board members. The draft will be sent to Board members to provide input to be included in the final draft for consideration at the November 2004 Board meeting. The Chair encouraged all Governors to attend the Rae Review Town Hall meeting on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 starting at 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the McIntyre Theatre, Fennell Campus. 13.2 Advocacy Strategy Ronald Holgerson, Executive Director, Marketing and Communications, presented the draft Mohawk College Advocacy Strategy. A list of MPs, MPPs, City of Hamilton and City of Brantford Councillors was provided to Board members. Governors were asked to indicate if they knew any of the people on the list in order to establish communication contacts. 14. REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT 14.1 Review of the President s Goals for 2004 to 2005 The President s Goals for 2004 to 2005 were tabled for discussion at the November 10, 2004 Board meeting. The President reported that she attended the October 7 th Ontario Economic Summit in Niagara-on-the-Lake which was co-chaired by Bob Rae and attended by 150 politicians, government bureaucrats, educators as well as community, business and industry leaders. The topic for discussion is the future of Ontario s economy.

Page 4 14.2 Update on College Governance and Accountability Capacity Enhancement Project The October 5, 2004 memorandum from the Ministry regarding the Colleges Governance and Accountability Capacity Enhancement Project was provided for information. 14.3 Fundraising Report Debbie Logel Butler provided the Fundraising report for information. Governors were reminded of the invitation to the October 28, 2004, 4 p.m. Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund Donors and Recipients Reception at The Arnie. 14.4 Mohawk College Neighbourhood Carolyn Gray provided the Mohawk College Neighbourhood report for information. 14.5 Ward Clerk Certificate Program The Ward Clerk Certificate program proposal was presented for information. 14.6 Consolidation of Financial Statements of Colleges onto Government s Books The September 17, 2004 Ministry memorandum regarding the consolidation of the financial statements of colleges onto the government s books was provided for information. 14.7 Yves Landry Foundation Awards Cheryl Jensen advised the Board of the significance of the Yves Landry Foundation Award for Outstanding Technical Co-operative Education Program Integrated Technician Apprenticeship Program. This is the second time that Mohawk College has received an Yves Landry Foundation Award. The Chair conveyed the Board s congratulations to all those concerned with this prestigious award. 15. REPORT OF THE CHAIR 15.1 Board Strategic Advance, October 2 & 3, 2004 Evaluation The evaluation for the October 2004 Board Strategic Advance was provided for information. 15.2 Board Orientation Session, September 30, 2004 The Chair reported that an orientation session was held for Pat MacDonald and Lacey Williams on September 30, 2004. 15.3 General Assembly, October 13, 2004 The Chair and the President attended the General Assembly earlier today. 16. INFORMATION ITEMS/UPCOMING MEETINGS Items 16.1 to 16.13 were provided for information. 16.1 News Release Government Moves to Reduce Barriers to Employment for the Internationally Trained 16.2 Academic Workload Task Force Update Bryan Adamczyk expressed concern with the current status of academic negotiations as reported in the Academic Workload Task Force update.
