Robert B. Handy was Mr. VFW because he carried the titles of Adjutant General and Quartermaster General from 1923-1950. 2

In New York City on August 29, 1917, to support the troops in Europe, VFW presented an ambulance to the U.S. Army. 3

In 1949, VFW celebrated its 50 th Anniversary with an appearance by President Harry S. Truman. 4

In 1950 Doris Day was a Buddy Poppy Girl. 5

VFW waged a campaign to make the Star-Spangled Banner the official national anthem. The bill was enacted in March 1931. 6

Babe Ruth, N.Y. Yankees slugger, presented President Warren G. Harding with the first official Buddy Poppy of 1923. 7

In 1938, Carl Sandburg, renowned poet, author and biographer of Abraham Lincoln, was appointed VFW s national historian. 8

On May 28, 1936, Congress passed Public Law 630, granting a congressional charter of incorporation to the VFW in order to protect the VFW s name and Cross of Malta logo. This charter was signed by Franklin D. Roosevelt. 9

Audie Murphy, America s most highly decorated WWII soldier, was inducted into Dallas VFW Post 1837 in 1945. 10

In November 1904 the first issue of Foreign Service was printed. This was the predecessor to the VFW Magazine. 11

General Douglas MacArthur was presented the VFW s prestigious Gold Medal and Citation on April 28, 1951. 12

In 1951, Pvt. Frank Jedure was the youngest veteran to join the VFW. Before his true age of 16 was revealed he had already served five months in Korea. 13

In 1974, the U.S. Postal Service recognized VFW for more than seven decades of service by issuing a special postage stamp commemorating the VFW s 75 th anniversary. 14

In 1995, the first all-women VFW Post was inaugurated in Topeka, Kansas. 15

In 1950 the VFW Life Membership was instituted an innovation to attract and retain new members. 16

In 1948-1949, Charles Kuralt was the Voice of Democracy (VOD) winner. In 1997, VFW designated the second place $15,000 prize the Charles Kuralt Memorial Scholarship. 17

VFW had an instrumental role in forming the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee in Washington, D.C. 18

The VFW played a major role in pushing through Congress, The GI Bill of World War II. 19

Roger Staubach, Vietnam Navy veteran and Dallas Cowboys quarterback is a VFW life member of Post 3359 in Garland, TX. 20

On September 29, 1899 the American Veterans of Foreign Service was formed by 13 veterans of the Spanish-American War. 21

On August 1, 1914 the organization s new and still current name Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States was revealed. 22

In 1918, the VFW National Headquarters was established in New York. 23

In 1922, the VFW Buddy Poppy program was established to assist disabled veterans of WWI. 26

In 1925, the VFW National Home in Eaton Rapids, Michigan was started to house widows and orphans of veterans. 27

In 1927, Aviator Charles Lindbergh became an honorary VFW member. 28

In 1940, VFW membership was 201,701. 29

In 1946, VFW membership reaches 1,544,444. 30

In 1957 Natalie Wood was a Buddy Poppy Girl. 31

1955 was the last time the Commander-in- Chief was elected directly by delegates. 32

In 1982, VFW contributes $300,000 toward the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. 33

In 1930, VFW National Headquarters in Kansas City was established. 34

In 1984, VFW membership passes 2 million mark. 35

In 1990, VFW contributes first installment of $650,000 to Korean War Memorial. 36

In 1920, while visiting Kansas City, General John J. Pershing was named Honorary Commander-in-Chief of the VFW. 37
