UHM Athletics Value Provided to UH Mānoa Division II & III Example Colleges and universities realize the strong desire of student-athletes to continue participating in athletics and market to them Example This year Hendrix relaunched varsity football... The reason was a naked cash-grab. The school believes it'll help marketing... it will attract football players... who will pay tuition... Division III schools charge tuition and room and board and fees (at Hendrix and at other private colleges, that sticker price is nearly $50,000 a year) to students who come and play because they figure they should get a degree and want to play football as they do. In his SB Nation breakdown of the Hendrix football revival, Evin Demirel writes that a roster of 65 to 70 students would net the college close to $2 million a year... You pay to play, and if Hendrix's coach, Buck Buchanan, has anything to say about it, you'll leave with some lifelong friends and a degree that represents some actual book learning. While schools are doing the same thing with other sports... football, with its huge rosters, is king. UHM Athletics Value Provided to UH Mānoa Facilities Maintenance Typically, departments within UHM are not responsible for maintenance of their facilities. Instead maintenance is performed by UHM and is not a cost responsibility of the individual departments. Exception are revenue-generating activities on campus (e.g., student housing, campus center) UHAD is responsible for maintenance of all facilities on the lower campus, including: Facilities used exclusively by UHAD Facilities used jointly by UHAD and UHM; and Facilities used exclusively by UHM August 10, 2017 8

UHM Athletics Value Provided to UH Mānoa Facilities Maintenance UHM provides UHAD with $1.6M as its contribution to maintenance of lower campus facilities Based on 2016 data, UHAD spent $1.7M on maintenance of lower campus facilities, including the facilities dedicated or shared by UHM Without an athletics program, UHM would still incur roughly $1.1M to maintain the facilities on the lower campus $0.6M of the annual maintenance is directly attributable to the UH Athletics program August 10, 2017 9
