THE NORTHERN ILLUSTRATION PRIZE Competition Guidelines and Terms & Conditions Part 1 Competition Guidelines & Terms and Conditions (page 2) Part 2 Guidelines for Completing the Online Form (page 6) Part 3 Category Definitions (page 7) Introduction: The Northern Illustration Prize (the competition) is a new international Illustration competition owned and delivered by The Northern School of Art (the School), in collaboration with AOI, and supported by The Gillian Dickinson Trust. The competition forms part of the biennial Northern Illustration Festival (the Festival) which is supported by Arts Council England, Hartlepool Borough Council and the Tees Valley Combined Authority.
Part 1 - Competition Guidelines and Terms and Conditions Please read these guidelines and terms and conditions carefully before submitting work for the competition. The guidelines will assist you in completing the online entry form and you will be asked to agree to the Terms and Conditions before you submit an entry. By registering your entry you have accepted these Terms and Conditions. 1 Submission 1.1 Registration To submit work to the competition entrants must register [at https://theaoi.com/northernillustration-prize-2019/ ] The definitions of type of entrant are as follows: Established Illustrator a professional illustrator entering their own work. Emerging Illustrator an early career illustrator submitting their own work. We do not accept entries from Third Parties entering work by an illustrator or student. 1.2 Entering Work There are two categories Established Illustrator and Emerging Illustrator All entries to both categories must address the Prize Theme which is Monkey. We expect you to interpret this theme in your own way, as character development, narrative, editorial, etc. However you may wish to respond in the context of the legend of the Hartlepool Monkey. i. Entries are for a single image ii. Entries must be new art, specifically created for this Prize or created between June 2018 and April 2019 iii. iv. The Prize is international and open to illustrators working in any medium, context or geographical location. v. Entries cannot be submitted by current members of staff at The Northern School of Art or our primary partner the AOI, or any member of the judging panel. vi. vii. viii. ix. Please ensure you follow the image upload guidelines (details also on the form upload page) to avoid problems with your entry. Images must be submitted in.jpg,.gif or.png formats (not.jpeg). Images can be up to 4MB and 3000px wide. XII. The entrant warrants (guarantees) to The Northern School of Art that they have the right to submit work, that the image is original and does not infringe the rights of any other party. The entrant will indemnify and keep the School indemnified against all claims, demands, actions, suits, proceedings, losses and costs (including any legal costs or reasonable expenses properly incurred and any compensation, costs and disbursements paid by the School on the advice of the its legal advisers to compromise or settle any claim) occasioned to the School in consequence of any breach or alleged breach of this warranty. Entrants must be 18 or over. 2
2 Selection 2.1 Judging Judging is completed online. All entries are presented anonymously. Initial shortlist selection will be by staff of The Northern School of Art who will select a shortlist for each category. Three judges view the shortlisted entries per category and the supporting information and select a winning work on the basis of the following criteria: Effectively meeting the brief Strong use of creative ideas Excellent technical execution All shortlisted work will be exhibited at The Northern Festival of Illustration taking place during June and July 2019. The School reserves the right not to present a Prize if the quality in a certain category is deemed not high enough. 2.2 Prize Winners. Prize winners will be notified by 25 May 2019 and they will be announced at The Northern Festival of Illustration Opening on 31 May. 3. Exhibition All Category Winning entries and shortlisted work will be included in The Northern Festival of Illustration exhibition at Hartlepool Art Gallery during June and July 2019. Images will be displayed inside the Gallery and in very large scale public exhibits on the Church Square, Hartlepool. It is a condition of entering the competition that all shortlisted work is made available for the exhibition as a high res digital file and in its original format if appropriate. It is the responsibility of the entrant to provide the artwork to be presented in the exhibition, and to follow the School s instructions for providing artwork for display. The final method of print and display is the decision of the School, and any agents it instructs in the delivery and design of the exhibition. 4. Publication All shortlisted and category winning work will be included in the publicity for the Prize (by the School and its partners and supporters). This will include digital as well as print channels. It is a condition of entering the competition that the School is granted a licence to reproduce selected work in print or digital material for the purposes of promoting the Northern Illustration Prize and The Northern Illustration Festival. 5. Prizes 5.1 Established Illustrator The winner will receive a cash prize of 2000 sterling payable by bank transfer in GBP (pounds sterling) only, within 30 days of the announcement of the Awards. Winners are responsible for covering any conversion or transfer fees they may be liable to pay to receive the cash prize. 3
Prize winners must ensure that they are able to accept the cash prize. No prize will be awarded if the judges deem that there is no entry of sufficient quality to win. Prizes are not transferable, and cash will be paid in one lump sum only. Prize winners are fully responsible for any taxes, fees or duties due in any country where they may be liable to pay such deductions. The School is not responsible for advising on tax issues relating to prizes. Any advertised prizes cannot be transferred to any other person and will only be given to the named creator of the winning entry (and not any third party that entered the submission). The School reserves the right to withdraw advertised prize at any time should circumstances dictate such a measure is required and will not be liable to provide compensation or alternative prizes. 5.2 Emerging Illustrator The winner will receive a studio space in the newly created Whitby Street Studios (aka The BIS) in Hartlepool, rent free for the period of one calendar year, the tenancy to commence within 3 months of the announcement of the prize. Prize winners must ensure that they are able to accept the prize, and are able to live and work in the UK. In the event that the winner is unable to accept the prize the School will consider a cash alternative of 1000 subject to the same conditions set out in 5.1 No prize will be awarded if the judges deem that there is no entry of sufficient quality to win. Prizes are not transferable, and cash will be paid in one lump sum only. Additional Terms The entrant agrees that if shortlisted, their selected entry (including image and supporting information), the name of the creator of the work and entrant s website may be published on the websites for The Northern Illustration Prize, The Northern Festival of Illustration, and the School. 4
The entrant agrees that if shortlisted their selected entry may be used by the School for the promotion of the competition, publication, Festival, and awards ceremony on materials including but not limited to invitation cards, press coverage, information leaflets, postcards, posters, on School and Festival social media, website, e-newsletters etc. and thus grants the School a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide licence to reproduce and distribute the entry in volume and/or digital form for 24 months. The entrant confirms and agrees that any shortlisted entry is available for use in The Northern Festival of Illustration exhibition at Hartlepool Art Gallery during June and July 2019. Images will be displayed inside the Gallery and in very large scale public exhibits on the Church Square, Hartlepool. The School reserves the right to cancel the competition or any element thereof should insufficient entries be received or any other circumstance arise that makes it necessary for the School to cancel the competition or any part of the competition. The School has no financial obligation to any entrant for cancellation, and no compensation shall be due. Part Three - Category Definitions Established Illustrator any professional illustrator entering their own work who has been practicing for more than 5 years on 1 March 2019. Emerging Illustrator current students, post-graduate students and graduates within two years of graduating, or anyone entering the illustration world within the past two years submitting their own work. 7
