By this point the juniors have gotten Nursing School figured out, and seniors are counting down the weeks before they start REAL RN jobs. As it gets closer to winter, I urge you to remember two things. First, if you missed getting your flu vaccine at the SNA flu shot clinic, please stop by UHS for a free shot. I want to thank everyone who helped at the clinic, as well as those who got their shots. If we can stop one patient from contracting Influenza by way of immunizing ourselves, then we have done a great thing. Second, as the Holiday season approaches, please remember those in need. The SNA will be adopting an Early Head Start family again this year. If everyone could put aside a quarter each week, we will be able to buy numerous fantastic presents for our family. I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving, and hope you all enjoy your well-earned break! ~2009 Clothing Sale Update~ Thank you to all students, staff, and faculty members that participated in the SNA clothing sale. We made a profit of over $700 for SNA. Next semester, SNA is planning on doing another clothing sale, so if you missed out on purchasing anything this time around, you can do so in Spring or you can buy some more items! We are planning on changing some of the items offered. If you have a suggestion on items you would like to see on the form, please e-mail Ashley Rusch at arusch@wisc.edu. Thanks again! Sue Tipple, Faculty Advisor smtipple@wisc.edu

~Interested in working with youth or just a new life experience?~ Volunteering at Easter Seals Wisconsin Camp Respite is a great way to show you care about helping persons with disabilities achieving success. Activities like riding bikes, taking nature walks, completing art projects, playing favorite sports and games, dancing, sledding, swimming, camping under the stars, singing, or almost anything else you or your camper can imagine can connect you and give the campers a real sense of accomplishment. This is a great opportunity to experience something new, serve the community and serve others. Currently, Easter Seals Wisconsin is looking for people to volunteer for the weekend programs at Respite Camp in Wisconsin Dells. They provide on-site room and board, as well as a brief training period. Volunteers are needed Friday at 3:00pm for training and the camp session lasts until Sunday at 4:00pm. Respite weekends count as 50 volunteer hours, during which volunteers will work one-on-one with campers with involved physical, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral disabilities in a variety of fun camp activities, as well as assisting with personal care (toileting, feeding, showering, dressing and transferring into and out of wheelchairs). Multiple weekends are possible. You must fill out an application and submit a reference form. After these items are received, a background check and interview will take place. Please contact the volunteer coordinator at 608-254-2502 or volunteer@wi.easterseals.com for more information. ~Voter Registration 2008~ On October 13th, SNA, along with ASM, held a Voter Registration and Information Day at the HSLC Atrium. The event allowed students, faculty, and anyone passing by to register to vote for the Nov. 4 election as well as find out information on what is needed at the polls, polling locations, how to validate registration status, what will be on the ballot, and the candidates views on various issues. Hosting the only drive of its kind on the Western part of campus, we registered 66 people, including a number of first time voters. SNA got many thanks from those that stopped by and from ASM for hosting such an informative and inspiring event. ~Upcoming Events and Reminders~ Tea with the Dean: TBA The NAO career fair is scheduled for November 3. SOCIAL EVENT for SNA members: UW- Men s Hockey Game on December 5. The NCLEX review will be held on November 12. We will be raffling off a used 3M Littmann Cardiology III at the next meeting. We will be having a HSLC Thanksgiving food drive beginning within the next few days. More information will be given later.

~Volunteer Opportunity Available~ South Madison Coalition for the Elderly Volunteer opportunities for the South Madison Coalition for the Elderly are still available. If you are interested in volunteering, please e-mail Nicole Voigt at navoigt@wisc.edu. ~Stick it to Flu Season!~ On October 22, 2008, the Student Nurses Association held a flu shot clinic in the Health Sciences Learning Center. A total of 277 UW students of various majors were immunized. The vaccinations were administered by 1 st and 2 nd year nursing student over a three hour period, while UW School of Nursing clinical faculty supervised the clinic. Supplies were funded by University Health Services. Surveys were collected from those immunized to find out which types of students were reached. Data showed that 58 nursing or pre-nursing students were immunized, 171 students in the School of Medicine and Public Health, along with over 35 students in other majors. ~Hockey!!~ Who s ready for some Badger hockey? The SNA has purchased lower section tickets for the Friday, December 5 th Men s Hockey game against Alaska-Anchorage. The game begins at 7:00 PM. A table will be set up in the atrium November 5th to buy tickets. SNA members can purchase tickets for $11; non-sna members pay $15. SNA members will also be given a chance to pre-register for tickets by e-mailing sthurs@wisc.edu up to the Nov 5 th deadline. This way you can get some of the best seats in the house before they get snatched up. We look forward to cheering the Badger s on with you! ~SNA Meeting Minutes- 10/8/2008~ MEETING MINUTES Meeting began at 11:25 a.m. Student Nurses Association - UW-Madison Wednesday, October 8, 2008, 1335 HSLC Andrea Gilmore discussed the Canopy Kids Bowling event for Saturday, October 12, 2008. ~An Introduction to Western Campus SNA~ The Western Campus is a branch off of UW-Madison s School of Nursing located in La Crosse, WI. We are made up of 48 students who share a great enthusiasm for nursing. UW-Madison Western Campus collaborates with UW-Madison, UW-La Crosse, and Gundersen Lutheran of La Crosse. We have wonderful faculty on campus, but we also use distance-linked technology with Madison for many of our classes. Western Campus SNA is made of UW-Madison Western Campus nursing students, pre-nursing students from UW-La Crosse, as well as others who are interested in nursing. Our main goal this year is to offer more opportunities to students to be active in the community, in addition to the events we participate in traditionally. We are donating monthly to a local food shelter, volunteering for Rotary Lights, a local holiday display, and volunteering at a nearby nursing home. We're excited to extend ourselves to the Madison s SNA by providing updates in the newsletter and by volunteering at the annual SNA conference this February.
