Imperial Valley College was recognized under the California Community Colleges Chancellor s Office Strong Workforce Stars Programs The Strong Workforce Career Education Programs with the following student outcomes are recognized: Increase in earnings by 50% or more Attainment of the regional living wage by 70% or more 90% or more employed in a job similar to field of study Bronze Stars: Welding Technology, Office Technology-Office Computer Applications, Administration of Justice, Corrections Silver Stars: Nursing, R.N., Emergency Medical Services Programs will be listed on the Chancellor s Office website and highlighted in the Here to Career app. Received $125,000 of supplemental funding caused by exceeding Strong Workforce Performance Standards--Only 5 colleges in San Diego/Imperial Region received supplemental funding. e t a Upd Page 2 April 2018 IVC hosted about 2,000 Imperial Valley K-12 students at the annual Career Education Expo. Thanks to all EWD staff and faculty who participated, particularly Patty Robles. This event provides career awareness to students from all grade levels. Many business, industry, & government representatives participated. Students gained knowledge of new careers and services. In addition, twenty adult education students from the El Centro Elementary School District Parent and Community Engagement Center attended and received a tour of the campus. Page 3 April 2018 California Mid-Winter Fair & Fiesta - Art Contest Winners: Contest winners and runner ups were presented with their Prize and a Certificate of Participation prior to the start of today s Board Meeting. 1st Place - Joel Roman 2nd Place - Isabella Armenta 3rd Place - Andrew Isias Darren Simon, IVC English part-time faculty member released his latest book; the second book in a young adult epic fantasy series. The new book is titled Guardian s Return. His first book in the series is titled Guardian s Nightmare. Congratulations!!!
Page 4 April 2018 IVC will be hosting a bi-national/four state Public Safety Summit on May 18, 2018. Law enforcement officials and Mayors from the following: Mexicali, Baja California; San Luis, Sonora; San Luis, Arizona; Somerton, Arizona; Yuma, Arizona and Imperial Valley cities will be conducting a summit to establish collaboration efforts between all four states. The summit will include: disaster planning; vehicle recognition technology; mutual aid agreements; influence of cannabis recognition; and the use of drug mules across international boundaries. Dr. Martha Garcia was selected as one of the 56th California Assembly District s 2018 Woman of the Year. She is commended for her commitment, tenacity, and leadership to improve our community through continuous leadership efforts. Upward Bound students and staff visited Washington, D.C. and participated in the Educational and Cultural Study Tour from April 3, 2018 to April 8, 2018. They visited the following: Smithsonian Museums, Lincoln Memorial, United States Holocaust Museum, Capitol Building, and Georgetown University. In addition, students met with elected officials.
Page 5 April 2018 Admissions & Records The Admissions and Records Team participated at ican at Brawley Union High School on March 22, 2018 in partnership with Imperial County Office of Education. It was an Informational College and Career Awareness Night for Parents and Students. Admissions & Records Admissions & Records Team conducting Community Outreach and Making a Difference Imperial Valley! On March 29, 2018, the Admissions and Records Team participated in Feed the Need in Brawley. Spent a lunch hour serving food to a resilient population in Brawley. Questions were answered and the attendees were encouraged to enroll or return to IVC. The majority of the attendees served were formerly incarcerated and/or homeless.
