Welcome! Quarterly Newsletter V o l. 6 ( 4 ) O c t - D e c 1 7 Fourth issue of QEC Newsletter of the year 2017 has been made available and accessible to all patrons. The desired objective of this periodic publication is to keep informed patrons about the latest developments and advancement in the University. Your esteemed feedback and valuable comments are Celebration of QS Ranking & ISO 9001:2015 Certification According to QS Asia Rankings 2018 NED University of Engineering & Technology has become the top-ranked engineering university in Sindh and has secured second position in all public-sector universities of the Province. Since 2014, NED University has climbed the ranking ladder by 13.9% and is now in the top 2.5% among all Asian universities. In QS Ranking, it has achieved the 301 st spot; and a head of time, the university has successfully transformed to ISO 9001: 2015 QMS and got certified by LRQA. This QMS is applicable to the provision of teaching studies and understanding research work in engineering and allied disciplines. In celebration of the accomplishment, a ceremony was organized by the QEC on 16 th October, 2017 at the Video Conference Hall, Civil Engineering Department which followed by lunch. Dr. Sarosh H. Lodi, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. M. Tufail, Pro Vice Chancellor, Deans, Chairpersons, HoDs, successful participants of the Lead Auditor training and distinguished guests from the affiliated colleges/institutions and other reputable universities attended the event. Prof. Dr. Asif Ahmed Shaikh, Director QEC / MR ISO welcomed the Honourable Vice Chancellor and distinguished guests. He briefed the restless efforts of the QEC for attaining new version of ISO and appreciated his team especially Dr. M. Wasif, Deputy Director QEC /DMR-II. He also thanked the top management for their utmost support. The Honourable Vice Chancellor shared with audience the success story of implementation of ISO 9000 Standards in the University and fulfilment of prerequisites of the QS Asia University Rankings. He appreciated entire team especially Mr. Kabeer Ehsan, Assistant Director, DIL and Mr. Islahuddin, PA to Director QEC/MR ISO for their hardship. He also reaffirmed his commitment to continue work focusing on vision of the University. This dignified ceremony ended with distribution of certificates of the training IRCA Registered Lead Auditor course based on ISO 9001: 2015 to successful participants. Competition for Development of MIS for OBE QEC arranged competition to develop best MIS System to support the Outcome Based Education (OBE) System in the University. Initially, four teams comprising of two departments; Team#1 EED & TXD, Team#2 ELD & CoE, Team#3 UED & CSD and Team#4 CED & CS&SE were selected. The competition was held on 22 nd November, According to the evaluation by the Panel of Judges, Team#3 comprising of UED & CSD won the competition. Certificate of achievement and a cash prize of Rs. 100,000/- was awarded to the winning team. Architectur e & Planning Prof. Dr. Noman Ahmed, Dean (AMS) and Dr. Suneela Ahmed, Assistant Professor participated and presented paper in the International Conference on Protecting the Cultural Heritage of the Muslim World, jointly organized by IRCICA, ISESCO and OIC Research Centre on 1 st November, 2017 at Istanbul, Turkey. Scholars from all over the world participated in the conference. One important feature of the conference was the status of heritage sites and locations in Indian administered Kashmir. The Istanbul Declaration mentioned that Kashmir is an important heritage issue for the Muslim world. Committee of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Sukkur from 25 th -27 th October, One Faculty Member delivered a lecture on Carbon Footprint at PSQCA, Karachi on 12 th December, One Faculty Member presented a paper in the 6 th International Symposium of A.NERGY 2017 Conference at Korea from 14 th -21 st October, One Faculty Member attended the Wash Joint Sector Review (JSR) Workshop at Movenpick Hotel, Karachi from 6 th -8 th November, One Faculty Member attended workshop session on Entrepreneurship Curriculum Development in collaboration with US Consulate General, Karachi at NEDUET on 5 th October, A study trip to Soorty Enterprises Wastewater Treatment Plant located at Landhi Industrial Area was arranged on 11 th November,..Rick Pitino Third International Conference of the Linguistic Association of Pakistan-ICLAP 2017 was hosted by the department in collaboration with the HEC from 12 th -14 th October The theme of the Conference was Global Developments and Local Perspectives: Expanding Scope for Linguistic Studies and Applied Linguistic Practice. The three-day programme included fifteen plenary talks and six technical workshops by eminent international and national language, linguistics, applied linguistics professionals besides sixty-five paper and thirteen poster presentations made by language experts and researchers from across Pakistan. The department hosted a guest speaker session with Dr. Livia Holden, Professor and Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Socio -Legal Studies, University of Oxford UK on 26 th December, The purpose was to motivate and provide opportunity for the BS, MS and PhD students along with the faculty members to interact with eminent international scholars. Ms. Hina Mohammad Ali, student of MAL received a research grant of $2000 for her research project An Ethnographic Investigation of the Intergenerational Language Shift and Maintenance of the Urban Ethnolinguistics Community to help, preserve and promote indigenous minority languages of Pakistan from an international organization WMO-London. Computer & Infor mation Systems Engineering The department along with Urban and Infrastructure Department declared successful and entitled for award of certificate of achievement and prize money in the competition for development of MIS for OBE. The event was held on 22 nd November, Dr. Muhammad Asad Arfeen, Assistant Professor presented his talk on Countering Cyber Terrorism by Internet Traffic & Malware Reverse Engineering at Symposium organized by Pakistan Academy of Engineering titled Cyber security- Where do we stand. The event was held on 16 th December, 2017 at Mövenpick Hotel, Karachi. Urban & Infrastr ucture Engineering The University participated in the 19 th Allama Iqbal Shield Declamation Contest 2017 organized by the HEC at Islamabad. Mr. Shah Nihal Idress, student of the department secured 2 nd Position with Cash Prize in the Final Round. The contest consisted of three rounds; Intra-University Declamation, All Sindh Inter- University Extempore Declamation and All Pakistan Inter- University Extempore Declamation, with a cash prize on each level by the HEC. Pol ymer & Petr ochemical Engineering The Second International Conference on Advanced Material & Process engineering was jointly organized by Polymer and Petrochemical, Chemical & Material Engineering Departments on 12 th -13 th December, The conference was intended to create an international forum for academics, researchers, and scientists around the world to discuss new results and proposals regarding the issues related to material and process engineering. Around 300 participants participated in the conference. Participants from five countries made the conference international in scope. Prof. Dr. Kausar Ali Syed, Chairperson, Dr. Rafiq Ahmed, Assistant Professor and Mr. Raza Muhammad Khan, Assistant Professor participated in the seminar on Importance of Particle Size Analysis held on 4 th December, 2017 at Ramada Plaza Hotel, Karachi. Mr. Talha Zia s composite of 12 single images documenting the full moon has been displayed on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration s (NASA) Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOF). He graduated in 2015 from the department. The news was reported in the daily DAWN Karachi and available at https://www.dawn.com/news/1370960. Electr onic Engineering The National Instruments Seminar on "5G - Framing the Future of Wireless" was jointly organized by Dr. Tahir (Electronic Department) and Mr. Adnan (National Instruments Pakistan) on 1 st November, 2017 at the CIS Lecture Hall. Dr. Imran Aslam, Associate Professor was the Session Chair on First International Conference on the Latest Trends in Electrical Engineering and Computing Technologies (INTELLECT 2017) held at PAF-KIET Karachi on 15 th -16 th November, Dr. Sadia Muniza, Assistant Professor organized a seminar titled "Organic Electronic and Photonic Devices: Materials, Designs, Fabrication, Characterization, Optimization and Research Needs" held on 21 st November, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Hassan Sayyad, Dean Faculty of Engineering Sciences, Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute (GIKI) of Engineering Sciences and Technology was the Guest Speaker. Materials Engineering 2 nd International Conference on Advance Materials & Process Engineering (AMPE-2017) was organized jointly with the department of Chemical, Polymer & Petrochemical and Metallurgical Engineering Departments. The conference was held on 12 th -13 th December, 2017 at the University Auditorium. Electrical Engineering Dr. Beenish Sultana received her PhD from the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 2017, under the scheme Strengthening of NED University of Engineering and Technology, Mega- M3 of the Higher Education Commission, Pakistan. IEEE PES NEDUET Chapter organized the Induction Ceremony on 4 th December, 2017 to brief its newly recruited members about the significance of becoming a part of this prestigious society. During event, policy for the year 2017-18 was presented, whereas, teams and their respective directors were also announced. The current SSR Karachi Section, Shaikh Muhammad Anas, Guest Speaker emphasized on why one should become an international member of IEEE, and how we can serve our society through volunteering. He also mentioned numerous incentives IEEE offers to its members. IEEE PES NEDUET organized a seminar on 8 th December, More than 250 students attended the seminar. Mr. M. Nabeel, Representative of Scholarship Network and Guest Speaker guided the undergraduates about various scholarship opportunities from all around the globe and a competent way to successfully claim them. Mechanical Engineering The Department organized a workshop on NED Mentorship Initiative on 14 th November, 2017 to improve teaching, research and fetching funding for research. IMechE NED Chapter organized a technical presentation competition for engineering students of all the universities on 20 th December, The event was named as Speak Out For Engineers (SOfE). Civil Engineering 9 th International Civil Engineering Conference Striving Towards Resilient Built Environment (ICEC- 2017), IEP Karachi Centre, held on 22 nd -23 rd, December Seminar on Performance Based Design of Tall Buildings held on 24 th, November Three Weeks Hands-on Training Workshop on Computer Aided Project Management with Primavera P6 was conducted during October-November, Prof. Dr. Rizwan Ul Haque Farooqui, Co-Chairman, attended CPD short course titled Supply Chain Management held on 26 th December, 2017 at University of Engineering & Technology, Lahore. Dr. Muhammad Aslam Bhutto, Assistant Professor, presented a paper in the 1 st International Conference on Quality Assurance at Higher Education Level held on 18 th -19 th December 2017 at Khyber Medical University, Peshawar. Prof. Dr. Rizwan Ul Haque Farooqui, Co-Chairman, attended Contract Administration training as a Speaker, organized by Highway Research & Training Centre (HRTC) at HRTC Complex, Motorway M-1 Camp, Burhan held on 14 th -16 th November, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Shafqat Ejaz and Mr. Haris Akram Bhatti, Assistant Professor, attended meeting and workshop on ACIAR Project LWR-036 Groundwater Management held on 6 th -11 th November, 2017 at Naushehro Feroze and Hyderabad. Chemical Engineering The Final Year Project Session was hosted by team SCHEME (Society of Chemical Engineers) held in November 2017 with the purpose of introducing the technical abilities to the industries. Mr. Bilal Kazmi, an alumni of batch 2009-2010, Senior Production Engineer at ARCOMA was the Chief Guest along with other reputable industry personals. An Alumni session was hosted by Team SCHEME on 8 th December, 2017 where a number of Alumni members of the (Batch 2007-08) attended and guided on career building to the young minds. The speakers included Mr. M. Haris (Team Leader Nestle), Mr. Aun Ali (Supply Chain Manager Day Fresh), Mr. Syed Ashar Wahab (Senior Process Engineer NRL) and Mr. Zaki Ahmad (Senior Process Engineer PARCO). An Industrial visit was organized by the team SCHEME for the students of Third Year (Batch 2015-16) on 7 th December, 2017 to LOTTE CHEMICALS PAKISTAN LTD. During the visit a presentation was given by Mr. Sajid Hussain (Plant Manager Oxidation) along with a tour of various process sections and physical equipment s present at the plant. The department organized the 2 nd International Conference on Advanced Material and Process Engineering (AMPE) on 12 th -13 th December, 2017 at NEDUET main university campus. The Objective of the conference was discussion on of papers relating to Advance Materials, Nano-Composites, Chemical Processes, Process industries Problems & Solutions and Energy & Environment. The prestigious prodigy 2.0 was hosted by Team SCHEME, which included sports as Cricket, Futsal, Chess, Badminton, Throw ball and virtual sports as C.S and FIFA. The cricket tournament held from 22 nd -23 rd December, 2017 and rest of the sports from 26 th -29 th December, The closing ceremony was held on 29 th December, Professor Dr. Inayat Ullah Memon, Chairperson and Chief Guest distributed certificates among the winners. Automotive & Marine Engineering NED University in collaboration with DICE Foundation, USA organized a two day event named DICE Automotive 2017 on 28 th 29 th December, 2017 at the University Auditorium. The event comprised of four components: 1.Student Project Competition- Students from Universities all over the country participated in the event. 2.Industry Exhibition- Local Automotive Industry exhibited their products and services. 3.Conference organized on "Emerging trends in Automotive Engineering" Technical papers were presented by academics. 4.DICE Shark-The DICE Shark event was arranged which provided opportunity for students to pitch their innovative projects and business plan in front of venture capitalist. Textile Engineering Dr. Shenela Naqvi visited TJPU from September to December She also presented a paper in the 1 st International Forum on Textiles, held in November Dr. Muhammad Dawood Hussain presented a paper in the 1 st International Conference on Technical Textiles held in November Dr. Muhammad Ali completed a training on 30 th September, 2017 on Developing instructor`s competency for Textile Technology, conducted by KOICA, South Korea. Petroleum Engineering The Closing ceremony of the Project Establishment of Norwegian Centre of Excellence for Petroleum Studies was held at the Video Conferencing Facility on 26 th December, Dr. Sarosh Hashmat Lodi, Vice Chancellor was the Chief Guest. The ceremony was attended by a number of distinguished dignitaries from Ministry of Planning, Development and Reforms, Petroleum Industry, and Academia. The department has been equipped with state-of the-art equipment Multiple Gas Analyzer and Dynamic Linear Swell Meter with Compactor through Norwegian Funded Project Establishment of Norwegian Centre of Excellence for Petroleum Studies. The labs have now been significantly strengthened for research purpose. M/s Pak Instrument Ltd organized an online training session on Dynamic Linear Swellmeter with Compactor on 29 th November, 2017 at the Mud Engineering & Cementing Lab of the department. The training was attended by faculty members and laboratory staff of the department. The department organized a distinguished lecture session on 2 nd October, 2017 through video link in its Video Conferencing Facility. The lecture was conducted by Dr. Sigve Hovda, Associate Professor, Department of Geoscience and Petroleum, Norwegian University of Science & Technology (NTNU). He focused on the Emerging Challenges in Drilling Engineering of the Petroleum Industry and the means to mitigate these challenges by the smart use of Hydraulic Fracking, Managed Pressure Drilling, Big Data and Automation in Drilling Engineering. Undergraduate, postgraduate students and faculty members attended the session. The department organized a distinguished lecture session on 28 th November, 2017 through video link in its Video Conferencing Facility. The lecture was conducted by Prof. Alexy Pavlov, Professor, Department of Geoscience and Petroleum, Norwegian University of Science & Technology (NTNU). Dr. Pavlov focused on the Petroleum Cybernetics, Cybernetics toolbox and examples, Elements of cybernetics technologies, Petroleum cybernetics and Application to drilling and oil and gas production. A large number of participants from industry, undergraduate and postgraduate students and faculty members attended the session. One Day Symposium on Institutional Cooperation Programme (ICP) was organized on 30 th November, 2017 in Islamabad by the Steering Committee of Government of Pakistan. The objective of the symposium was to highlight the key achievements under the ICP. The symposium was attended by the large number of distinguished dignitaries including Mr. Tore Nedrebo, Ambassador of Norway to Pakistan. The programme concluded with the distribution of shields to the honorable guests by Prof. Dr. Mir Shabbar Ali, Dean (CPL). Director ate of Industrial Liaison Activities organized: Six On-Campus Recruitment Drives at NED UET for Fresh Graduates/Graduating Students and also shared Job Placement Forms (CVs) / Graduate Directories/Posting of Job Flyers at DIL Website and Departmental Notice Boards, with around 123 industries. Issued around 41 Letters of Industrial Visit to students. Received 76 Final Year Projects for students Batch 2014-15. Arranged 1421 Internships for third year students. Arranged Seminar on Road Safety Campaign with Autocom. Arranged CReaTE 17 EA Consulting Students Design Competition- Director Industrial Liaison Visited two Industries. Arranged DICE Automotive-2017 with collaboration of Automotive Engineering department as Chief Coordinator of the event. CINETIC The department arranged the Orientation Carnival for students of first year. The booth exhibited prominent startups, namely CycleYaari, Edvon and Openmic. In celebration of Global Entrepreneurship Week, the department in collaboration with Global Entrepreneurship Network hosted a workshop on Ideation Creative and Innovative Thinking Techniques. Examinations Depar tment The inaugural ceremony of Kaizen Activity was organized by the department on 20 th October, 2017 which was attended by Pro-Vice Chancellor, Deans, Chairpersons and HoDs. Dr. Sarosh Hashmat Lodi, Vice Chancellor was the Chief Guest of the ceremony. Prof. Dr. Nasir Uddin Shaikh, Controller of Examinations (COE) presented the idea, benefits and implementation procedure of Kaizen activities in an organization especially in educational institutions. He also enlightened the participants about recent Kaizen activities at Examinations Department and emphasized on the significance of Kaizen activities in other non-teaching and teaching departments of the University. Dr. Sarosh Hashmat Lodi, Vice Chancellor appreciated the initiative of COE for introducing Kaizen activities in his department. He unveiled the Kaizen Activity Display Center at the department. Medical Depar tment Blood Donation Camp was organized with the collaboration with DSA on 6 th -7 th December, 2017 at Old Administration Building (Ground Floor), NED University Main Campus. An awareness Campaign/Meeting for Polio Vaccination was arranged on 14 th December, 2017 at Cowasjee School at NED University. Engr. Abul Kalam Librar y A training Seminar on IEEE xplore and other E-resources was held in the Digital Library Section of Engr. Abul Kalam Library on 4 th December, The event was conducted by the representative of A&J Def Tek Consultants in two sessions. A large number of students of third year, final year and research scholars attended the session and participated in the IEEE quiz competition.
