Middletown Police Department The Middletown Police Department was established on July 2, 2007 and began operations on October 31, 2007. The Department is comprised of 31 Sworn Officers, Five Civilians, One Community Service Officer, a Traffic Service Unit, Two K-9 Officers, Three Detectives, Seasonal Program/Public Safety Aides, and a SWAT Team.

The Town of Middletown is currently accepting applications for an opening in the Middletown Police Department for a Recruit. How to Apply Applications may be downloaded from this web site. Applications are also available at the Middletown Police Department (MPD) at 130 Hampden Road, Middletown, DE 19709. All information must be received by October 21, 2016, by 4:00 pm to: Human Resources Town of Middletown 19 W. Green St. Middletown, DE 19709 ALL of the following documents must be submitted to be considered: MPD Application HIPPA Release Police Background Booklet Authorization Release- Background Information Application Release Form Applicants must be available to attend a written exam in person, which will be scheduled on November 3, 2016 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm and be held at the Volunteer Hose Company of Middletown, at 27 W. Green St., Middletown, DE 19709. Qualifications Candidates must meet all of the COPT Standards of the State of Delaware: Citizenship - Applicant must be a United States citizen. Age Applicant must be a minimum of twenty-one (21) years of age by the end of the police academy. Education - Applicants must possess an Associate Degree or at least 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university; OR at least two (2) consecutive years of active military service with the Armed Services of the United States with an honorable discharge and thirty 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university. Residence - There is no residency requirement. Driver's License Possession of a valid Delaware Class D Driver s License or its equivalent. Criminal Record and Activity - Any felony conviction is an automatic disqualification. Any criminal activity that would be considered a felony under Delaware law, federal law, or the law of the state in which the activity occurred is a disqualification. Applicants must have all prior criminal arrests expunged before being hired. (Arrest or conviction for all other crimes and offenses are subject to evaluation).

Drug Usage - Any use of an illegal drug will be subject to review at the time the application is submitted, any prior use of a hallucinogenic drug, will be an automatic disqualification. All other drug use, including illegally using prescribed drugs, is subject to review. Weight Weight should be proportionate to height. Hearing - Normal hearing. Vision Vision must not be less than 20/200 in each eye and correctable to 20/20 with contact lenses, in each eye, and must have the ability to distinguish between the colors of red, green and amber. Examinations Successful completion of a medical, fitness and psychological examination. NOTE: The police department operates 24-hours per day, seven days per week. You must be able and willing to work all days of the week and all shifts, including nights, weekends and all holidays. Job Elements Upon successful completion of a Delaware Certified Police Academy and successful completion of the MPD Field Training Program, recruits will be elevated to the rank of police officer. General Statement of Duties: Performs general duty police work in the protection of life and property throughout the Town; prevents violation of statutes and ordinances; investigates and suppresses disturbances; investigates complaints; makes arrests and issues summonses when appropriate; does related work as required. Distinguishing Features of the Class: An employee in this class performs work consisting of varied police assignments. Usually a Police Officer is assigned to a patrol squad or other police unit and conducts investigations as directed by a superior officer; performs routine preliminary investigations and miscellaneous duties performed in accordance with departmental rules and regulations, directives and Delaware law. This employee is required to exercise initiative and discretion when faced with emergency conditions. Examples of Duties and Responsibilities: Enforces Delaware laws and Town regulations; Patrols an assigned area during a specific period in motorized police equipment; Checks doors and windows and examines premises of unoccupied buildings or residences in order to detect suspicious conditions; Investigates suspicious conditions and complaints and makes arrests of persons who violate laws and ordinances;

Accompanies prisoners to headquarters, jail, or court and appears in court as arresting officer; Directs traffic and either arrests or gives violation tickets to those who break traffic laws; Attends fires or accidents in assigned area as directed, giving all possible assistance and preparing necessary reports from investigations made; Maintains order in crowds and attends parades and other public gatherings; Watches for stolen cars and wanted or missing persons; Makes investigations and enforces Town and Delaware laws pertaining to juvenile offenders; Gives advice on laws and ordinances and general information to the public; Operates radio patrol car as required; Operates radar unit for traffic control; Serves subpoenas and executes warrants issued by Delaware courts; Provides escort service for public dignitaries, funerals, over width vehicles, and explosive vehicles; Transports prisoners to specified destinations; Assists motorists whose vehicles are broken down or stranded; Acts for Police Sergeant in his or her absence as directed; Makes special investigations as directed in plain clothes; Promotes and ongoing attitude of dedications to excellent public service and ensures that external and internal customers are provided with the highest quality of service; Operates a data processing terminal, personal computer, and other related equipment in the course of the work. Required knowledge, skills and abilities: Good social and general intelligence; good powers of observation and memory; good judgment; good knowledge of first-aid methods; skill in the use of firearms; demonstrated proficiency to safely operate a vehicle on the road in emergency situations at high speed and under normal conditions; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions; ability to communicate courteously and effectively, both verbally and in writing; excellent moral character and physical strength; ability to pass a physical examination and drug screen; computer literacy in: LEISS, TRACS, CJIS, DELJIS, NCIC and word processing applications. Acceptable Experience and Training: Twenty-one (21) years of age and two (2) consecutive years of service as a Delaware certified police officer, verified through Delaware s Council on Police Training (COPT) and thirty (30) credit hours from an accredited college or university. Must have current certification as a Delaware certified police officer.

The Physical Fitness Test will be performed by Cardio Kinetics.
