Executive Summary During the 2015-2016 academic year, 2,831 students completed degrees and certificates. Of those awards, 62% were associate s degrees and 38% were certificates. Educational Objectives Of the program completers who responded to the follow-up survey, 97% indicated that they had achieved their educational objective. Licensing/Certification Exams Forty-seven percent of respondents indicated that they had taken a state licensing exam or an industry certificate exam since leaving JCCC. Of those who had taken an exam, 93% reported that they had passed the exam. Current Education Fifty-six percent of program completers are continuing their education. Employment Of those employed, 64% reported they were working in a related field. The average hourly wage was $18.94. Employer Evaluations Ninety-three percent of employers indicated that program completer s overall job preparation were good or very good. 1

Survey Methods Completer Survey The population for the current survey included 2,831 students who completed a degree or certificate during the 2015-2016 academic year. Of those awards, 62% were associate s degrees and 38% were certificates. Questionnaires were initially emailed to members with valid email addresses in early November, 2016. In mid-november, questionnaires were then mailed to all remaining members of the population and to those who had not responded to the email request. Electronic and mailed reminders were distributed the first of December. Attempts to contact remaining non-respondents by telephone began mid- December, 2016 and ended late January, 2017. When attempts to contact former students ended in January, 2017, 212 completers had been removed from contact lists because of obsolete addresses or telephone numbers and 190 had declined to complete the questionnaire. One thousand four hundred six former students had either completed a questionnaire or a telephone interview, yielding an adjusted response rate of 53%. Employer Survey Four hundred eighty-eight of the respondents who indicate they are working in jobs related to their program, provided employer contact information. Questionnaires asking employers to evaluate program completers were mailed to those employers in March and April 2017. The questionnaire was initially emailed to employers with valid email addresses in early March, 2017. Questionnaires were also mailed to all remaining employers at that time. In April, a reminder questionnaire was distributed to those who had not responded to the email and mailed request. Twenty-five questionnaires were returned as undeliverable. An additional 5 were returned incomplete with employers declining to complete the questionnaire. One hundred seventy-three of the remaining employers returned questionnaires, yielding an adjusted employer survey response rate of 37%. Caution should be exercised when interpreting results at program levels. Small numbers of respondents in most career programs may make results unrepresentative of all completers of individual career programs. Questions and comments should be directed to LaWanda Hughes, Institutional Planning & Research, Johnson County Community College. 2

Completer Results Educational Objectives Respondents indicated most frequently that their primary educational objectives were completely achieved while at JCCC (74%). Seventy-one percent of completers are currently enrolled in classes as seen in Table 2 (Appendix A). Figure 1 Primary Educational Objectives Licensing/Certification Exams Thirty-eight percent of completers had taken a state licensing exam or an industry certificate exam. Of those who had taken an exam, 93% reported that they had passed the exam. (see Table 3, Appendix A). 3

Completer Results Current Employment Overall, 51% of all respondents indicated that they were employed in a related field while 14% are not in the labor force, and 5% are currently looking for work. For CTE graduates, 65% indicated they were employed in a related field (see Table 4, Appendix A). Figure 2 Current Employment Situation 4

Completer Results Average Hourly Wage For those working in a related field the mean wage was $18.94 per hour (see Table 5, Appendix A). Wages were most commonly between $10 and $15 per hour. Figure 3 Average Hourly Wage 1 Employer Evaluations Employers evaluated completers and indicated their assessments of completers overall career preparation. Evaluations were highly positive. Ninety-three percent of employers indicated that completers were good or very good regarding overall job preparation (see Table 6, Appendix A). Employers hiring the highest number of graduates includes BNSF, Children s Mercy Hospital, Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Olathe Medical Center, and University of Kansas Hospital. 1 Percents are of respondents who indicated that the skills they developed in their JCCC career programs were directly related to their current jobs. 5
