SCIENCE AND PRACTICE OF CSD Overview of CSD CSD Specialty Programs UNDERSTANDING HIGH - TEMPERATURE STERILIZATION Description: This educational activity reviews the essential concepts of steam sterilization as it applies to surgical instruments. Types of steam sterilization are reviewed and monitoring parameters are emphasized. UNDERSTANDING CENTRAL SERVICE DEPARTMENTS discusses central service processing workflow and its impact on infection prevention. Proper steps and key clinical considerations for instrument cleaning and decontamination are reviewed. Different sterilization methods are defined and monitoring indicators are discussed. Proper management of instruments used in surgical and other invasive procedures facilitate safe and effective patient outcomes. Current guidelines and recommended practices for proper decontamination and sterilization of these devices are also outlined. BASICS OF INSTRUMENT CARE AND HANDLING focuses on the causes for instrument damage and best practice for caring and handling of stainless steel surgical instruments. Cleaning, packaging and sterilization will be comprehensively covered in additional modules. UNDERSTANDING LOW - TEMPERATURE STERILIZATION Description: This educational activity provides an overview of the current, low-temperature sterilization methods and the purpose for applying each of them. Additionally, important practices are described and noteworthy concerns are reviewed. INVENTORY BEST PRACTICES Description: The purpose of this educational activity is relative to the inventory and distribution process in the sterile processing department. It discusses the ergonomic and safety implications of these tasks. An understanding of the ways that instrument tracking technologies can help hospitals improve their productivity and accuracy is also discussed. PRINCIPLES OF CLEANING AND DISINFECTION Description: This educational activity will discuss principles of cleaning, disinfection and provide an overview of the decontamination area. Key components of environmental, equipment, and housekeeping concerns as well as the use of personal protective equipment and equipment monitoring will be identified. SURGICAL GRADES OF INSTRUMENTS: THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS Description: This program explores key steps in the manufacturing process of Premium grade surgical instruments, clinical considerations used when selecting instruments as well as the importance of water quality used for processing are discussed. WORKING TOGETHER: CSD AND LOANER TRAYS Description: This educational activity will identify regulatory and professional organizations that impact sterile processing practices. Compliance and preparation for accreditation survey will be discussed. Consequences of poor processing practices will be highlighted. CSD Advanced for Supervisors and Managers MAINTAINING CSD COMPLIANCE: UNDERSTANDING THE REGULATORY LANDSCAPE Description: This educational activity will identify regulatory and professional organizations that impact sterile processing practices. Compliance and preparation for accreditation survey will be discussed. Consequences of poor processing practices will be highlighted. OR TO SPD BEST PRACTICES Description: This activity explores the importance of infection control practices related to instrument processing and its impact on patient outcomes. Proper steps and key clinical considerations for instrument cleaning and decontamination are reviewed and best practices are discussed. A variety of methods of sterilization will be defined along with the significance of sterilization monitoring. Special processing considerations for complex equipment is also addressed.
