Young Women of Distinction Scholarship and Internship Program Information Section The Young Women Of Distinction Award Modeled after the prestigious ATHENA Award, the Young Women of Distinction Award was introduced by the Women s Council in 2000. This award aspires to nurture Rochester s next generation of women leaders, and in doing so, enables companies and organizations within our community to grow and prosper. Recipients receive a cash scholarship and a paid internship with a local company. The Young Women of Distinction Award recognizes high school seniors in the greater Rochester area who demonstrate excellence in Academics Community Service Leadership The Scholarships The Young Women of Distinction Athena Award Scholarship - $3,000 Two (2) Young Women of Distinction Scholarship Awards - $1,500 each Fifteen (15) finalists will receive a cash award The Internships The top three scholarship winners are awarded the opportunity for a paid internship from among the following sponsoring companies: Entre Computer Services, Kertas Technologies, Next Step Magazine, PAETEC, and the Susan B. Anthony House. Additional internships may also become available to the fifteen finalists. Important Guidelines Nominee must be a high school senior (2008-2009 academic year). Nominees will be evaluated according to the criteria listed in the scholarship application form. The application must be completed by the nominee and accompanied by a nomination letter. All pages of the application must be received in loose paper, one sided, and paper clipped; Please do not staple the pages of the application; do not submit the application in a binder. Please submit your application in an 8-1/2 x 11 size envelope; please DO NOT FAX your application. Please submit ALL required documentation; incomplete applications will not be considered. Electronic submissions: Send to susan.george@rballiance.com The Awards Ceremony The Women s Council, an affiliate of the Rochester Business Alliance, will host a recognition ceremony to honor the thirty semi-finalists at the Young Women of Distinction Awards program on June 1 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Rochester Plaza. The keynote speaker will be the 2009 ATHENA recipient, Holly Hillberg, Chief Technology Officer and Vice President at Carestream Health.
Young Women of Distinction Scholarship and Internship Program Nomination Form Nominee School Graduation Date Home Address Email Home Phone Cumulative GPA (include scale) (ex.: 3.9 of 4.0) The following additional documentation is required by each nominee in order to be considered as a candidate for the Young Women of Distinction scholarships and internships. Each submission will be evaluated in the content area, as well as in vocabulary, grammar, and organization. Additional information will NOT be considered. NOMINATION LETTER Each applicant must be nominated in a formal letter, accompanying the application form. Nominations will be accepted from teachers, counselors, employers, family members, clergy, and friends. Nominators: Please be mindful of the award criteria when comprising your letter and please include your contact information. 2. ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Each applicant must submit an official high school transcript in a sealed envelope. 3. LEADERSHIP In professional and personal environments, leadership traits are recognized in young women who exhibit initiative, promote excellence in others, manage conflict, or solve a problem. Describe in 250 words or less a specific example of demonstrated leadership that impacted another person (or group) at school, at work, at home, or in the community. 4. COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTION Each applicant must complete the attached worksheet, Community Service and Extra-Curricular Activities, which details her time spent at work, in volunteerism, at an internship, and in other activities to which she dedicated significant time and passion (i.e, sports, chorus, responsibilities at home). The worksheet is a compilation of the applicant s activity over her four years in high school. 5. PERSONAL ESSAY Each applicant must submit an essay (250 words) that explains her goals and aspirations for her future, supported by the steps she is taking/has taken to prepare for her success. Certificate and Release Authorization: I certify this information is true, complete and accurate. I also authorize release of information to confirm and/or verify this application. As a nominee I am aware that the Women s Council and the Rochester Business Alliance will use my name and/or photo for publicity and marketing purposes. If I am selected, I authorize the review of my transcript to the companies offering internship opportunities. The recipient is selected at the ATHENA Award ceremony held in January of every year. Athena Finalists & Young Women of Distinction Recognition Reception: The Women s Council brings together the Athena Finalists and the past YWOD recipients at its annual recognition reception to celebrate success and community through networking, service and mentoring relationships. Modeled after the ATHENA Award, the Women s Council created this scholarship program to help nurture the next generation of women leaders, while enabling companies and organizations within our community to grow and prosper. The program is designed to discover outstanding young women who have displayed leadership, academic excellence, and involvement in the community. As the Women s Council extends its reach to these young women in their senior year of school through ongoing mentor relationships, we encourage them to return to their community after college to make a difference in the business sector.
