POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION Clinical Nurse Educator Residential Aged Care CLASSIFICATION SJV Enterprise Agreement 2014 RN Grade 5 REPORTS TO Director of Care DIRECT REPORTS Nil PRIMARY LOCATION Wangaratta, Victoria INDIRECT REPORTS Nil PRIMARY OBJECTIVE The Clinical Nurse Educator has responsibility to assess, plan, deliver and evaluate professional development, clinical education and training for all care staff to continuously improve the quality of care for all residents in the SJV aged care facility. The role provides leadership and support to nursing staff and the multidisciplinary teams to continuously improve the quality of life and standards of care for all residents. The role also provides key training metrics to SJV s regulatory compliance requirements such as the Australian Aged Care Standards. Professional Development and Clinical Education Framework Professional Development Calendar Develop the SJV Professional Development and Clinical Education Framework to meet the models of care adopted by SJV and in line with Australian Aged Care Quality Standards. Develop, manage and conduct an education and training needs analysis for all clinical care staff. Develop and implement the SJV Professional Development and Clinical Education Plan (the Plan) including specialist clinical training to meet short, medium and long-term requirements. Provide input into the annual budget formulation and monitor and control expenditure within scope of role. In conjunction with Clinical Care Managers, monitor, evaluate and report on the achievement of clinical objectives and the effectiveness of the Plan. Develop, organise and deliver an annual calendar of professional development and clinical education activities to meet the clinical care service outcomes and best practice. This included meeting or exceeding the Australian Aged Care Quality Agency (AACQA) Standards. Communicate and promote the participation of staff in scheduled training and development activities Disseminate information on other professional development resources that will increase and strengthen clinical skills and competencies. Monitor, evaluate and report on participation rates and outcomes. Competency Assessments Undertake competency assessments of clinical care staff for the purpose of identifying education and training needs In conjunction with Human Resources staff, assist in the competency assessment of non-clinical staff Analyse data from individual performance appraisals to assist in the determination of individual and organisational education and training needs. Education and Training Delivery Implement the SJV Professional Development and Clinical Education Framework and Annual Plan Facilitate the orientation of new or transitioning staff including non-clinical staff Source high quality and suitable training providers and other resources to maximise the modality of training and options available to staff to meet and strengthen their competencies. Establish and maintain reference libraries for use by staff in supporting their ongoing professional development; may be a combination of physical and online references / resources. Support the ongoing clinical development of care staff through mentoring or direct supervision as appropriate. Maintain all SJV education and training records management systems to ensure compliance with organisational and external standards are met. This includes mandatory and practical training records. Develop and implement procedures and processes for obtaining high quality feedback on education and training activities; incorporate into reporting mechanisms. Provide monthly and ad hoc reports to management to ensure compliance with internal education and training and external regulatory requirements. Professional Leadership Mentor and act as a professional role model demonstrating clinical leadership and a positive learning culture across the facility and clinical care towards all residents, their families and carers. Act as a resource to other managers and care staff to promote and deliver the standards of care expected across SJV and in line with SJV s values. Disseminate clinical knowledge through presentations or publications. Evidence of professional leadership and updating of own clinical competencies to ensure education and training delivery is in line with best practice Results of reviews from managers and staff through education and training feedback processes Feedback from Staff Satisfaction Survey results as they relate to education and training outcomes Evidence of flexible modes of training and quality suppliers of training and development services Reference libraries established and promoted Training records maintained in accurate and up to date manner with ease of retrieval of data for management reporting auditing purposes. Quality Compliance and Continuous Improvement Participate in audits to monitor and improve resident care and actively contribute to quality improvement initiatives. Participate in organisational risk management processes as required and offer solutions where possible. Identify practice problems and use evidence to integrate theory into practice and training and education activities. Actively contribute to the development of education and training resources to meet SJV s needs. Maintain high level of awareness and expertise in aged care quality standards and provide input into ensuring SJV is compliant with the external regulatory standards and principles. Maintain awareness of and ensure compliance with SJV policies and procedures. Maintain all files and records in an accurate manner to ensure ease of retrieval of information (including conversation records Backup Clinical Care Delivery Provide clinical care and services within scope of practice on a backup and/or emergency basis as required. Occupational Health, Safety and Environment Compliance Maintain awareness of and compliance with health and safety policies and procedures to maintain a safe working environment. Comply with SJV mandatory training including but not limited to OHS, manual handling, infection control and fire and emergency training. Take corrective action within delegation authorities to remedy safety hazards or risks and restore a safe working environment. Refer to Manager as required. Ability to adapt from educator and mentoring role to performance management where necessary Working in a relatively small aged care facility in a regional area with limited access to large education providers and other resources PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Occasional lifting up to 5kgs Sitting for extended periods of time Ability to walk short distances throughout the facility Manual dexterity needed for repetitive tasks Must be able to work in a climate controlled, office environment Normal vision to perform normal job duties Hearing must be good to interpret what is being communicated by people with hearing or speech impediments SELECTION CRITERIA Qualifications and experience Current Nursing registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) Post-Graduate qualifications in Gerontology or Aged Care would be desirable. Demonstrated minimum of 3 years' recent clinical experience providing clinical education to clinical care staff using adult learning principles and facilitation skills plus NMBA approved standards and guidelines for the conduct of clinical competency assessments Training and Assessment Certificate IV Training and Assessment A minimum of 4 years post basic registration experience and evidence of ongoing professional development as reflected in Professional Practice Portfolio Advanced computer skills and use of software programs to develop and deliver education and training, maintain care recipient data and generate reports National Police Check Certificate Key attributes High level interpersonal and communications skills both written and verbal Demonstrated commitment to own professional development to broaden competency and expertise and use of research and evidence based practice to deliver superior clinical education and outcomes Strong internal consultancy skills and customer service orientation Demonstrated mentoring and coaching skills Effective problem-solving skills Strong time management and planning skills and flexibility to meet changing priorities BUDGET/EXPENDITURE As determined by St. John's Village Annual Budget St John s Village Inc.
