THE DISTRICT A Weekly Update from Governor Brenda Walker August 27, 2012 Governor s Message Fellow Rotarians, Stack and I traveled with PDG Houston White to the visitation for Kathleen Staggs (wife of PDG Jack Staggs) in Huntsville. It served to remind me of the love and support our Rotarians provide in times of sorrow. On Tuesday, we participated in Fredonia club s service project Meet the Jacks at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches. Over the weekend we traveled to Galveston to meet our 13 inbound Youth Exchange students and then on to Lone Star College in Montgomery on Saturday to interview and select the Group Study Exchange Team Leader. Now that we have a leader (see page 5 ), let s work at finding qualified candidates for the four person team (ages 25-40) who will represent us in District 7020 (Caribbean). Deadline to submit an application is September 30th and interviews will be held Oct. 20th. Team members must be non- Rotarians. Please join us for the Foundation, Membership, Public Relations meeting on September 15th in Montgomery. Register at www.rotary5910.org. Peace Through Service, Brenda

PORT ARTHUR CLUB SUPPORTS EDUCATION Dr. Sam Monroe, President of Lamar College Port Arthur receives a $3,000 check from the Rotary Club of Port Arthur from Club President, George Newsome. The check will be used to provide Scholarships for needy students. The club also donated $1,000 to Community Care for food and $1,500 to Museum of the Gulf Coast for projects. In addition the club provides dictionaries to 3rd grade students. Funds for these projects are raised by the clubs annual fundraiser Taste of Gumbo. Labor Day celebrates the economic and social contributions of workers. Following the deaths of a number of workers during the Pullman strike in 1894, President Grover Cleveland reconciled with Reyes, leader of the labor movement. Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through Congress unanimously and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike. Labor Day has come to be celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of the summer. In high society, Labor Day is (or was) considered the last day of the year when it is fashionable to wear white or seersucker. Enjoy the upcoming holiday weekend.

2012-2013 LONG TERM YOUTH EXCHANGE STUDENTS The students met for lunch at The Spot prior to an orientation hosted by Rotarians Bill & Christina Rathbun at their beautiful beachfront property Palisade Palms in Galveston. Beach activities and a reception and dinner hosted by the Rotary Club of Galveston were enjoyed by the group.

A YEAR WITH THE SWEDES Returning exchange student Ian Kendall gave a presentation to Rotary Club of The Woodlands about his year abroad in Sweden. Ian ended his presentation by introducing this years outgoing student, Danielle Alvarado, who is exchanging to Belgium. Dawn Keating (RCTW Youth Exchange Officer), Danielle Alvarado (RCTW exchange student), Mary Matteson Parrish (RCTW President), Robert Ian Kendall (RCTW exchange student), Rhonda Ellisor (Assistant Governor Rotary District 5910).
