The SPIE student chapter handbook was sent via email to students listed above for them to read more about the SPIE student chapter. 2). Detailed Chapter Activities Since Last Report 1. Our regular chapter meeting was held at noon on February 3 rd at third floor lounge of Liquid Crystal Institute (LCI), with the joy of enjoying pizzas and cokes. Besides our chapter s 20 regular members, there are six non-members, including Yuxiang Lin, Yong- Kyu Jang, John Harden, Clinton Braganza, Badel Mbanga, Christopher Bailey who are 1-2 year graduate student at LCI, also two students from Physics department, one student from Chemistry department. We reviewed the past activities and members gave suggestions for future activities. We described to non-members how easy it is to become a member of SPIE and join our chapter, what kind of benefits will be available, what kind of impact will be on people s future careers etc. Non-members are excited about the achievements out chapter have accomplished, and show great interest of becoming a member of SPIE and join our student chapter. There is a long duration of Q&A between members and non-members. We also discuss about the trip to annual meeting this August M. Gu Page 2 10/20/2005

in San Diego and the final list of members who made their decisions to attend the annual meeting, travel arrangement etc. 2. We have invited Dr. John L. West, vice president for Research and dean of Graduate Studies at Kent State University, former director of Liquid Crystal Institute, for a guest lecture. Dr. West gave a talk on Flexible Displays: the New Frontier, he went through a vivid presentation by leading audience a virtual tour of a local Best Buy store showing all kinds of Liquid Crystal applications in the store, concluded the trend for future development of display, compared LCDs with current competitors like Plasma displays, FED displays, OLEDs etc. More than 40 people listened to the lecture at Samsung Auditorium at LCI on March 7 th. The second annual Liquid Crystal Day was held at Liquid Crystal Institute on April 22 nd (details see: http://www.lcd.kent.edu), our student chapter members helped during the preparation of the event. All the chapter members attended the five presentations including one from our chapter advisor Dr. Oleg D. Lavrentovich. The talk of Student Entrepreneurship from Dr. Gregory Crawford of Brown University, who graduated from LCI, attracted much attention from the audience by showing a vivid picture of achievements accomplished by Brown University graduate students. Eleven members actively submitted their research results for the poster session (see http://www.ilcsoc.org/lcd/abstracts.php), and G. Liao has won the Outstanding Paper M. Gu Page 4 10/20/2005

Award in the category of 3+ year graduate student. Members also attended the exhibitions from local companies, such as AlphaMicro, Hana, Kent Display etc, which is a great opportunity for members to interact with local liquid crystal industry. We are planning an educational tour for local high school in collaboration with the Great Lake SPIE Chapter. 3. Fund raising through Graduate Student Senate of Kent State University to support the educational tour for high school students. 4. Promote academic program in the fields of Optics, Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, and Applications of Liquid Crystals, especially the Graduate Chemical Physics Interdisciplinary program at Liquid Crystal Institute. We will present posters during the annual meeting exhibitions in San Diego. 5. Attracting undergraduate students from Physics and Chemistry by giving seminars, tours and interactive communications. 6. Actively participate in conferences in the fields of Optics, Chemistry, Engineering, Physics and Applications of Liquid Crystals. 7. We have a preliminary idea of collecting information of intern and sharing with our members. And if it is successful, and we hope to expand it to regional scale, including University of Dayton, Pennsylvania State University and Notre Dame University s SPIE student chapters. 8. Maintain close relations, interchange experience and plan common activities with other SPIE chapters around the world.
