MY SURGERY ACTIVITY BOOK This Book Belongs to:

You re Having Surgery! Surgery helps fix a problem with your body to make you better. I'm having surgery to take my tonsils out to help my throat. Why Are You Having Surgery? Draw your face on the person. Then, circle the place where you are having surgery. I'm having surgery to put tubes in my ears so I can hear better. 2

The Day of Your Surgery Your tummy needs to be empty for surgery. This is so you don t get sick. You can t eat or drink anything for a while before your surgery. Not even water! So you may get a little hungry or thirsty. Take a Toy! You can take one small toy with you to the hospital. Draw a picture of the toy you want to bring with you. 3

Before Surgery Surgery is done in a big building. It is called a hospital or a surgery center. When you get there, many things will happen. You will put on hospital pajamas. What color are your pajamas? The nurse checks your temperature. This may be done in your ear or your mouth. You and your toy will be given a bracelet. The bracelet has your name on it. 4

hot pit A stethoscope lets the nurse or doctor listen to your body. You may be given a drink of medicine. It will make you feel sleepy. A blood pressure cuff gives your arm a big hug. It tells how your blood moves. How Many Words Can You Make Out of HOSPITAL? 5

To the Operating Room The next stop is the operating room. This is where the surgery is done. 6

Surgery Maze Find your way to the operating room. Say hello to each person you pass along the way. 7

People You See Many people take care of you. They wear masks over their mouths and noses and hats on their heads. This helps keep everything very clean. The sleep doctor (anesthesiologist) makes you sleep during surgery. Draw the smile that s behind the mask. 8 The nurse takes care of you and helps the doctor. The surgeon is the doctor who does the surgery to make you better.

Who s in the Waiting Room? Connect the dots to find who s waiting for you while you have your surgery. The family member or friend who came with you waits in a room near the operating room. 9

In the Operating Room In the operating room, you lie on a bed. You see big machines and lights. You hear loud beeps. Lots of nice people help take care of you. 10 The sleep doctor puts a sleep mask over your mouth and nose. This mask gives you air that makes you sleep through the whole surgery. You will wake up only when your surgery is all over.

Sticky Things! For surgery, some things are stuck to you. Stickers stick to your chest. A soft clip or piece of tape holds on to your finger. These things listen to your body during surgery. A soft tube is put on the back of your hand so your body can drink while you re asleep. All the sticky things will come off before you go home. Word Jumble Unscramble the words below to find things you will see in the operating room. kams octdor ghtli deb achimne ursne ath opelpe 11

Waking Up You will wake up in the recovery room. A nurse is there to help you feel better. The nurse will give you a drink and a little bit to eat. You will see your family member or friend soon! 12 Right after you wake up, you may be dizzy. You may feel sick to your stomach. Noises may sound very loud. These strange feelings will go away soon.

Note to Parents Your child is having surgery. This can be a frightening experience for both of you. Knowing what to expect can help relieve much of your anxiety. This activity book can help you and your child become familiar with the hospital. Read it through. You may want to read it to your child. If your child asks questions that you can t answer, call the doctor, hospital, or surgery center. The staff will be glad to help. Above all, try to be as calm as possible about the surgery. Your child will respond like you. If you are relaxed, it will help make the experience more positive for everyone. TAKE OUR PATIENT SURVEY. Help us help other patients.
