Education Sessions Descriptions PAIN: THE FIFTH VITAL SIGN Chuck Gokoo, MD, CWS, American Medical Technologies Pain is a common, subjective experience for many older adults. While it may be a factor associated with a number of disease processes, it is a myth that pain is a normal part of aging. The medical staff perception that pain medication may further increase confusion in older adults with dementia or that older adults do not feel pain is a persistent barrier to quality care. The information presented will assist clinicians in understanding the current regulations regarding resident pain and in providing enhanced interventions and outcomes. REDUCING ACUTE CARE READMISSIONS: A QUALITY IMPROVEMENT APPROACH Ellen First, Health Dimensions Group What do you know about readmission penalties, ACOS, and Medicare Shared Savings Programs? Are you seen as a great partner to your referring institutions as they work to reduce readmissions? Do you know where to start? We will be exploring the actions you can take to become a great partner with your referring hospital to create safe and warm handoffs to reduce avoidable readmissions. We will be showing you the why s and how s of readmission reduction. We will be using actual case studies to walk through the steps necessary to communicate earlier and more clearly with the care continuum. THE BREAKING POINT: DEALING WITH COMPASSION FATIGUE Lisa Johnson, Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley It is expected that most clinicians will experience symptoms of compassion fatigue at some point during their professional career. This is a normal reaction. Sometimes compassion fatigue can become so severe that it interferes with the care we provide others as well as caring for ourselves. Learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of compassion fatigue and solutions to deal with it personally and professionally. Tuesday, May 13 9:00 am 10:30 am ANNUAL CONFRERENCE GENERAL SESSION Dr. James Johnson University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Dr. Johnson, William R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship, will lead us in a discussion regarding the changing demography of the US population and its effect on emerging consumer markets. Specific focus will be given to the effect on aging in North Carolina. There is no additional charge to attend.
