Summer 6 British International School of Houston 3 Primary Book Fair Review Last week I had the pleasure of helping out at the Scholastic Book Fair in the Primary Library and I have to say how much the pupils enjoyed the whole experience. Gail Helmore and her small team of volunteers worked their socks off but it was definitely well worth all the effort. There was no missing the initial Wow Factor when you walked into the Primary Library, seeing it stuffed with bright displays of colourfull books inviting the shopper to browse and read. The selection of books on offer was wide and varied and there seemed to be something for everyone, from Nursery to young adult, both factual and fiction. Each Primary class had a scheduled time to explore the Book Fair and all the students were encouraged to come in during lunch, break times and after school, which they did in droves! It was wonderful to watch the children sharing a love of books with their friends, huddled in groups pouring over a reference book or perhaps recommending a new series of chapter books to each other. There was also an incredible amount of incidental learning going on when the children were shopping and handling US money. Many pupils were learning which US coins were which and how much they were worth, they also needed to calculate if they had enough money to buy their chosen items, including the added tax and then check their change. I was also impressed how the children helped each other; often times offering to share their money if a friend didn t have quite enough and a few spontaneously donated some of their money to the Star of Hope pot too. We have some very caring and generous children in our school. The Book Fair was an enormous success, taking in $9,500 during the week, generating around $5,000 in Scholastic dollars which can be spent on all kinds of resources for the school libraries. There will also be a donation of books to the Star of Hope. Thank you to everyone who supported the fair! We look forward to sharing in the students enjoyment of the new books and other resources purchased with the profits. The Book Fair Team
