ROCHESTER, MINN Box 654, Rochester, MN 55903 Volume 35Number 2November2018 http://www.mayo.edu/mayo-clinic-alumni-center/methodist-kahler-school-nursing-alumni-association A Message from the Alumni Board The M-K Alumni Association celebrated our 100th Anniversary with multiple activities and lots of time remembering our shared history. Over 400 were present for the Friday evening banquet, after a day of visiting the Foundation House for tea and/or going on a historic trolley tour of Rochester, perusing the Historic Preservation area, and reminiscing with each other. On Saturday the annual business meeting found us voting on the decision to dissolve the active Alumni Association with a plan to keep an executive board in place until 2020 followed by a trip to Mayowood by many attendees. The present Alumni Association Board wishes to thank all who have made this a successful organization for so many years. We are confident that you will all choose another way to keep in touch with your classmates - we know how deeply your connection to our school runs with many years of friendships and shared life experiences that have shaped who we are now. The Board's wish for you all is to savor the past, enjoy the present and look forward to new joys and challenges yet to come." Letters from recipients of the scholarship fund Dear Methodist-Kahler School of Nursing Alumni Association Members, I am writing to express my sincere gratitude to you for making the Methodist-Kahler School of Nursing Alumni Scholarship possible. I was thrilled to learn of my selection for this honor, and I am deeply appreciative of your support. I am currently pursuing my Doctorate of Nurse Anesthesia Practice degree at Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences. I am starting the second year of the program, which involves extensive classroom and clinical hours. Before furthering my education, I was a nurse at Mayo Clinic Methodist Hospital in the medical/surgical/transplant intensive care unit for five years. The financial assistance you provided will be of great help to me in paying my educational expenses and will allow me to focus more time on studying. Thank you again for your support and investment in Mayo Clinic nurses like me. I am committed to my education and the health care field, and I am one step closer to my dream career as a nurse anesthetist thanks to your continued generosity and the Methodist-Kahler School of Nursing Alumni Scholarship. Congratulations to you and your organization on the upcoming 100 year anniversary of the Methodist-Kahler School of Nursing. Sincerely, Katelynn Kressin BSN, SRNA, CCRN Doctorate of Nurse Anesthesia Practice Program Mayo School of Health Sciences I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation for receiving this education award to attend the Magnet conference. The Magnet conference will supplement my knowledge of the nursing profession through practice, education, and research application. I hope to enrich my knowledge by

networking with other nursing peers who value the nursing profession as much as I do. Mayo Clinic lives the principles of Magnet in every day nursing practice; therefore, I am honored to represent Mayo Clinic while at the conference. Second recipients letter Janelle Olson: I am currently working in pediatrics specializing in caring for children that require pulmonary care, which may include cystic fibrosis, tracheostomy and ventilator needs, asthma, and other rare lung diseases. I had previously worked on the general pediatric floor at St Mary s hospital-rochester campus. Prior to that, I had worked in general pediatrics in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Before becoming a nurse I knew I wanted to work with children, but I wasn t sure that being a teacher was my passion. My mother sweetly reminded me that a significant aspect of nursing is education. When I was younger I didn t realize education was such a vital component of nursing. I soon realized that my mom was exactly right and that I had indeed found my true calling. I am forever grateful for her comment. My mother has recently retired from nursing and I have one sister who is also a nurse. Each of our paths has led us in different directions in the nursing profession. I have always cared for children and their families; however, my mother has worked in obstetrics, school nursing, and family medicine. My sister currently works in mental health and has worked as a nurse providing support to hospice patients and their families. The nursing profession offers a wide array of opportunities, which is why I appreciate and am passionate about caring for others. The Magnet conference will continue to feed by enthusiasm for nursing and my hunger for learning from others. The opportunity to be afforded an education award to continue to learn and grow as a nurse in the avenue that inspires me the most is rewarding. I would not be able to attend a Magnet conference if it was not for this gift. I am a busy full-time working mother of 3 little children (7 years old, 5 years old, and 4 months old) who wishes to continue her education and professional goals while supporting my family and ensuring they live out their goals in the future as well. The support and continued appreciation for nursing staff at Mayo Clinic is phenomenal. I truly enjoy working at Mayo Clinic and touching the lives of the patients and families we meet every day. I cannot express how appreciative and grateful I am for this experience. To be able to attend a Magnet conference and celebrate nursing and it's professionalism with other nursing peers is very exciting and a check-off of my professional bucket list. Your thoughtfulness is a gift and I am truly humbled. Thank you! Appreciatively, Janelle Olson Blessing of the Hands Blessed be these hands that have touched life. Blessed be these hands that have felt pain. Blessed be these hands that have embraced with compassion. Blessed be these hands that have been clinched with anger or withdrawn in fear. Blessed be these hands that have drawn blood and administered medicine. Blessed be these hands that have cleaned beds and disposed of wastes. Blessed be these hands that have anointed the sick and offered blessings. Blessed be these that grow stiff with age. Blessed be these hands that have comforted the dying and held the dead. Blessed be these hands. We hold the future of these hands. We are gathered together to honor and celebrate the privilege we have experienced as Kahler and Methodist-Kahler nurses. We have touched many with our caring hearts and hands over these 100 years. Retirement does not stop us from reaching out.

Today we bless our hands and each other as we continue to care. Touch will always be the healing art of nurses.
