FROM THE DON S DESK As Jo Temple is on leave, sailing the ocean blue, it is up to me to welcome all new residents, relatives and staff who have joined us at Jindalee Aged Care Residence on behalf of all who work and reside here. The festive season is over and the new year has begun. We hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year. Left to Right Kay Murray (Staff Manager) Jo Costuna (Director of Nursing) Pam Bondfield (Deputy Director of Nursing) The celebrations held here were a great success thanks to the hard work of our Health and Leisure team. Separating Hoya and Frangipanis Christmas lunches had a favourable outcome, giving more room for all who came. The bus outing to view the Christmas lights was greatly enjoyed by those who went. This will continue as a yearly activity. Plans for this year include renovations for Casuarina, Jarrah and Diosma. Starting soon will be the upgrading of the secure units, Casuarina and Jarrah. This will be disruptive to residents, staff and visitors alike. We aim to minimise the impact and maintain a safe environment. As with any building renovations noise levels will be high on occasion and we ask for your patience during this process. If you have any questions or concerns now or during the renovations please see Jo or myself. Following the completion of Casuarina and Jarrah, the Diosma wing will then be renovated. Along with this renovation there will be the addition of a coffee shop and some changes to the office and reception areas. Until the next time! Kind Regards Pam & Kay Page 2

HEALTH & LEISURE REPORT Health & Leisure Team Front: Kate, Richard, Odile & Leanne Back: Kate, Adrian, Michael & Tracey (Left to Right) Hello everybody, Happy New Year to all residents, families and staff. I hope Santa was good to you over Christmas and that you got to spend time with family and loved ones. We had a very full program over the Christmas period with 3 separate Christmas parties to accommodate all the residents and relatives that attended. We also had Christmas theme activities such as craft, a movie afternoon & cooking. There was a special bus outing during the evening to look at the Christmas lights with over 30 residents attending, and I heard this was a great success. From February 2016 our hairdresser Judy, will be working on Tuesday and Wednesday, plus Monday morning on a flexible basis. This change is to accommodate her increased workload since Frangipani opened. Page 3

I also had 3 weeks off over Christmas and I went to the USA to have a week in Disneyland with my wife, 20 month old son, sister and mother in law Kay Murray. After Disneyland we headed off to Colorado via, Las Vegas and Grand Canyon and had a very white Christmas in a cabin in the Rockie s. It was magical and I have come back rested and ready to get back into the swing of things. Here a few pictures of my adventure. Until next time Kind Regards Richard, Kate, Leanne, Michael, Adrian, Tracey, Odile & Kate Page 4

MONTHS IN REVIEW Remembrance Service Every year for ANZAC day and Remembrance we pay homage to all the servicemen and women who gave their lives or were affected by active service. Due to overcast weather our service on November 11 th was moved inside. We have many residents who have served in various locations overseas and they came to the service proudly wearing their medals. After the service morning tea was provided, which gave residents a chance to chat and recall memories. We appreciate the sacrifices they made and this is just a small way that we can acknowledge them. Volunteers Morning Tea We had a group of around 20 volunteers who attended the annual Volunteer s morning tea. We put on this event to thank all the volunteers who contribute to the smooth running of our program throughout the year. Page 5

100 th Birthday We congratulate Enda Croft and Rosalie Fewster, who both celebrated their 100 th Birthday over the last 2 months. Both ladies had a chance to celebrate with friends and loved ones where their many accomplishments in life could be recognized. Christmas Parties We had 3 separate Christmas parties this year. Our first party was held on Tuesday 8 th December for residents and families from A B C D and J wings. H wing s party was held on the 9 th December and F wing s on 10 th December. All the Christmas parties were enjoyed by those attending, with positive feedback from many residents. Santa Claus made a visit to all the parties, and every resident received a small gift. Page 6

Restaurant Outing For our November restaurant outing we decided to try a different cuisine. We went to the Turkish Pride house in Woden, where we had a banquet meal. There was plenty of food and the meat was cooked to perfection, with all residents that attended giving positive feedback. Christmas Light Tour In the lead up to Christmas 33 residents and 2 staff headed out for a Christmas Lights Tour on Thursday December 17 th. Kate Larkham did a great job of researching suitable locations and we were able to view many amazing displays in Gordon and Bonython. Page 10

Entertainment During the Christmas period we had many different groups come and perform including The Two of Us, Mr Wong s Magic Show with Chinese dancing, Bill on the Accordion and a short Opera Recital by Margaret Legge- Wilkinson and Angela Giblin. We are so fortunate to have such an amazing range of entertainment available to us. Page 11

PRAISE AND COMPLAINTS BY RESIDENTS OR THEIR RELATIVES At Jindalee Aged Care Residence, we aim to provide the highest quality of care to our residents. To assist us to continually improve our service, we welcome feedback and suggestions for improvement for residents and their relatives. Suggestions are considered by the staff at the Resident s Care Committee Meeting where they are discussed. We investigate all complaints and aim to resolve issues quickly and effectively. Praise and concerns can be informal or formal, and anonymous if that is your desire. Most issues can be dealt with informally. If you have an issue please ask to speak to the person in charge of the wing. The issue may easily be dealt with in a simple conversation. Jindalee has a Praise and Complaint Form that is available, providing a more formal method of offering praise or concern. There is an option of remaining anonymous however it is difficult to give feedback if we do not know who is raising the concern. Once a Praise and Complaint Form has been completed, it can be handed to the nurse, placed in the suggestion box in the foyer or posted to Jindalee. The Directors of Nursing (DON s) or their delegates review all the forms, investigates the cause of the concern, with a focus on whether Jindalee s Policy and Procedures are contributing factors and takes appropriate action to rectify any issues. Feedback is then available to the complainant (if not anonymous). All completed forms are kept in a folder in the Educator s Office. External support groups can also offer assistance The Department of Social Services Complaints Resolution: 1800 550 552 Email: agedcomplaintscomms@health.gov.au Page 25
