The Carl Fricks Sportsmanship Scholarship Presented by the St. Louis Sports Commission Associates -2015 Nomination Packet- The St. Louis Sports Commission Associates the Sports Commission s young professionals group seeks nominations for the 2015 Carl Fricks Sportsmanship Scholarship. Created in 2009, the Sportsmanship Scholarship is presented annually to a graduating high school senior from the St. Louis region who exemplifies outstanding sportsmanship and character in athletic competition. The scholarship recipient receives $5,000 to use for higher education expenses. The Sportsmanship Scholarship is administered by the Sports Commission and its Associates group. The Associates raise funds for the scholarship and select its recipient. Since the program s inception, the Associates have awarded $36,000 to 16 college-bound St. Louis area students. The scholarship is a program of the Sports Commission s St. Louis Sports Foundation, which implements initiatives that promote sportsmanship in the community. In 2013, the scholarship was named in honor of the late Carl Fricks, whose daughter, Holly Yoakum, chaired the Associates group. Holly was and remains a passionate champion for the Sportsmanship Scholarship, and her father embodied the virtues the award seeks to recognize. Scholarship Criteria: In preparing a nomination, please pay close attention to the following criteria and factors for consideration: Scholarship candidates should be nominated for embodying the ideals and values of sportsmanship: honesty, integrity, civility, selflessness, kindness, compassion and class. While off-field activities and community service are applauded, scholarship candidates will be evaluated for their approach and character in competition. Off-field activities and community service do not factor into the selection consideration, and therefore, should not be the focus of an applicant s essay or letters of recommendation. The selection of the scholarship recipient is based solely on the applicant s commitment to sportsmanship and ability to address the stated criteria within the personal essay and letters of recommendation. The Sportsmanship Scholarship is not awarded based on financial need. Applicants should not reference their financial situation or socioeconomic background. Applicants who violate this guideline will be disqualified from consideration for the scholarship. Greatest consideration will be given to nominees who demonstrate a track record of sportsmanship and respect directed at opponents, officials and the spirit of the game. Nominees and their letters of recommendation should cite specific examples in which the scholarship candidate displayed extraordinary selflessness, integrity, kindness and class to the benefit of a non-teammate. While encouraging and helping those within one s team is admirable, the scholarship committee seeks candidates who transcend expectations for how one should honor the game and treat those outside their circle in competition. Athletic performance (wins and other statistics) is not a factor in the scholarship selection. Those connected to athletic teams, such as student managers, also are eligible for the scholarship should their leadership and behavior represent an extraordinary standard and model for all in sports to follow.

Nominee Eligibility Requirements: Must be a graduating high school senior. Must attend a high school in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Must not be attending college on a full scholarship. Students receiving partial scholarships are eligible. Required Nomination Materials: Sportsmanship Scholarship recipients will be selected by members of the St. Louis Sports Commission Associates Scholarship Committee. Before consideration, each nominee must provide to the committee the following documentation: Fully completed Sportsmanship Scholarship Nominee Form (attached). Two Sportsmanship Scholarship Nominator Forms (attached) each with a letter of recommendation from a coach, athletic director, teacher, school administrator or fellow student attesting to the nominee s outstanding sportsmanship. At least one nomination and recommendation must come from a coach or athletic director. A personal essay from the nominee describing why he or she should be chosen for this award (no longer than one page, single-spaced). While all information is required for full consideration, the committee will most heavily weigh the letters of recommendation from the nominators and the personal essay from the nominee. How to apply: To apply for the Carl Fricks Sportsmanship Scholarship, please mail, fax or e-mail all supporting documents to: St. Louis Sports Commission c/o Solomon Alexander 308 N. 21st Street Suite 500 St. Louis, MO 63103 Fax: 314-621-1391 E-mail: salexander@stlsports.org Deadline: All scholarship applications must be received by March 31, 2015. The recipient will be notified by April 30, 2015. The scholarship will be awarded for the 2015-16 academic year. The selected scholarship recipient will be required to provide a final transcript from his or her high school verifying graduation. Scholarship funds cannot be released until this requirement is met. For more information, please contact Sportsmanship Scholarship Committee Chair Danny Lewin at lewin.danny@gmail.com or 954-873-1332. Applicants and nominators are encouraged to review the bios of past Sportsmanship Scholarship recipients to see the attributes and actions that have resulted in recognition from the scholarship committee. The bios are posted at www.sportsmanship.org/scholarship.
