Statements & Search Criteria Mission St. Columba provides hospitality in a natural sanctuary to children and adults seeking growth and community through retreats, camps, conferences and events. Background St. Columba Conference and Retreat Center, a community outreach ministry of The Episcopal Diocese of West Tennessee, is a 140-acre wooded conference center. We host business retreats, church events, arts guilds, and have customizable services that can serve nearly any type of event. St. Columba is also home to Memphis' famous Mud Camp, serving rising 1st-6th graders for memorable day camp experiences each summer.the setting is secluded and peaceful, and event attendees often find it hard to believe that they are less than 20 minutes from the heart of Memphis.St. Columba Conference and Retreat Center is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization supported by the Diocese and individual donors. Impact In 2015, St. Columba served nearly 1,000 youth during camp and retreats on our 140 acre wooded campus. Nearly 7,000 people enjoyed our hospitality and property during retreats, conferences and family reunions. This year also saw the launch of Camp Able, a day camp specially designed to serve youth with autism, Down Syndrome, cerebral palsy and more. Our Overnight Outreach Camp ensures youth from inner city Memphis are able to experience camp and time in nature. We added an intern for Environmental Mission to help us bring environmentally responsible and sustainable projects to life and successfully applied for grants from the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis' Give365 program and Kanuga Conference's Minkler Howell Grants Program to Aid Children's Ministry. Needs St. Columba is seeking funds to support camp scholarships for Camp Able and support for Overnight Outreach Camp. We are also working to develop educational environmental programming and sustainable ministries including planting herbs and vegetables for educational and nutritional use. We will need funds for materials and signage. Funds are also needed to help maintain and preserve our buildings and grounds. Rates for the conference center only cover 70% of the cost of staying here. Episcopal Youth Camp, or Mud Camp, is made up of children from Memphis, Bartlett, Cordova, Southhaven, Germantown and Collierville. Programs Programs Mud Camp or Episcopal Day Camp Description Episcopal Day Camp, affectionately and popularly known as MUD CAMP by our campers and their families, has served the Memphis-area community for decades. A Christian camp in the Episcopal tradition, Mud Camp serves more than 600 boys and girls each summer with St. Columba's beautiful 145-acre campus and world-famous MUD HOLE providing a natural space to learn, sing, play and make friends. Mud Camp helps children experience joy the way it used to be...technologyfree, dirty, wet and filled with smiles and adventures. Budget $0.00 Target Population Strategy Long term Success Children and Youth (0-19 years) For 30 years, Mud Camp has had over 10,000 kids be kids in an active, outdoor, messy environment where they are encouraged to try new things and make new friends. Mud Camp also has a long tradition of turning campers into counselors by encouraging and developing leadership skills as they age through the program each year. Camp Able Description Camp Able serves youth with a variety of challenges, ranging from cerebral palsy and Down s syndrome to autism. With a 1:1 counselor/camper ratio, each camper will have the opportunity to experience all camp activities, including low ropes course, swimming, canoeing, exploring nature, arts and crafts and worship. Budget $0.00 Target Population Strategy Short Term Success Adolescents Only (13-19 years) During its launch in June of 2015, 14 campers with disabilities ranging from Down Syndrome to autism enjoyed a week of outdoor fun, swimming, crafts, animals,field trips and a talent show. Each camper was challenged to try new things and was helped by a counselor that was assigned exclusively to them to navigate any obstacles. 3
Overnight Outreach Camp Description Each year, Mud Camp partners with inner city youth organizations, such as Rachel's Kids, to host children who would not otherwise be able to attend camp. During their week, they are encouraged to overcome their fears and try new things such as swimming in a lake or exploring nature. As they age within the program, they have to opportunity to come back as a counselor and model positive behavior to younger campers.
