The Value of the Tonsley Model - The Entrepreneurial University Mr Matthew Salier Director, New Venture Institute Flinders University

Context Driving Innovation Recognition that Innovation is critical to knowledgebased, high value, high-tech industries of the future Australia produces 3.9% of the world s research; 9 th in the OECD, with only 0.3% of the world s population Australia improved its global share of the top 1% of highly cited publications by 75% of from 2005 to 2013 BUT, on the comprehensive Global Innovation Index Australia ranked 17 th globally in 2015

Lack of Evidence for University- Business Engagement Collaboration on innovation with higher education or public research institutions, by firm size

Observations University - SME Collaboration South Australian SMEs have embraced the whole idea of Open Innovation or Networked Innovation. BUT SMEs are most likely to collaborate with Clients/Customers or Suppliers, rather than Universities. Collaboration occurs as part of existing business-tobusiness relationships more comfortable and efficient SMEs will form largely instrumental or transactional relationships with universities.

Observations on University - SME Collaboration When SMEs collaborate with universities, they prefer doing it with those closer in proximity to them i.e. those based in South Australia. More effective mode of SME engagement with Universities for innovation NOT for formal links e.g. contracts, intellectual property licensing Softer, more relational / networked collaboration. Need to invest in efforts to build trust and form strong relationships between SMEs and Universities Not in the same value chain and both operate in very different sectors and with very different practices

And for our students... An imperative to build student competencies for a disruptive environment Graduate employment nationally 65%+ of students unemployed after 4months. A focus on adaptability by embedding innovation and enterprise skills Strong link with live learning, real skill development in real time with real clients Capable of creating opportunities for themselves or future employers

What does Tonsley enable? A different approach Building on excellent good practice available Programs such - Medical Device Partnering Program, NanoConnect, associated strong research Institutes Diverse placement/ internship relationships with some of the states most innovative companies World Class research activities, Industrial Transformation, VR/ AR and simulation, AI and Cognitive Computing Embedded with industry An Entrepreneurial University

A front door..

The philosophy Industry engaged and focused on creating value for business Brought to life in a building in which business works alongside researchers, students and startups Facilitated by resources that are dedicated to creating new and unique connections to the University. Challenging existing paradigms

The NVI approach... New Venture Institute (NVI) was established in an effort to drive SME and student targeted innovation, entrepreneurship and enterprise in new ways To reinvent the way the University creates impact Inspire bold new ways of thinking. Educate for the careers of tomorrow and industries of the future. Connect business, research and students differently

But how... Three mutually supportive activity streams to support innovation and performance improvement Business Engagement Experiential Education New Venture Creation/ Existing Business Growth Develop legitimacy and differentiation Focused externally, works across the University, mapped the internal and external ecosystems Maximize and leverage investment in Tonsley

Progress so far...3 years Business disruption, innovation & entrepreneurship 32 SME Innovation Workshops, 102 SME clients live projects 1,448 entrepreneurs and innovators trained 136 early stage businesses created 50+ FTE positions created 260+ strong network of entrepreneurs & business leaders Industry connections translated

Tonsley the broader opportunity Continue to bring together core capabilities and opportunities Continue to access global best practice to inform outcomes toward economic priorities An investment to develop a Living Lab framework @Tonsley to accelerate action, that is customer centric, and supported by cutting edge research

Smart Ageing Manufacturing Innovative Living Lab @Tonsley IoT Technologies And.......

Thankyou!
