MEMBERSHIP DUES THE POST HAS RESOLVED TO PAY THE ANNUAL DUES OF POST MEMBERS IN THE SERVICE ON ACTIVE DUTY. For The 2012 membership year our Post had 152 members. This represents 102% of our annual goal. The National Headquarters has created a program for you to pay your dues on line. PLEASE, DO NOT use this program! It is not yet able to complete the process and our Post will not get your dues. Benefits of the annual dues of $32.00 per year include the American Legion magazine and, most importantly, helps us support our returning veteran s and their families. 2013 dues are due in July. If you have not yet renewed, please consider doing so. The Post has resolved to pay the annual dues of Post members in the service on active duty. Active duty service members may send their dues renewal form and a note with their current duty status to the Post, in care of Don Schram. We currently have 108 renewals. PAGE 3 Our annual poppy day was a huge success thanks to those who turned out. We had a record year in 2012. We can always use help with our events and committees. Please consider becoming active in your Post. Many are doing double duty to fill needed positions. We especially need help with the Membership Committee. We are also initiating a clothing and donation drive for the Homeless Veteran s organization in Buffalo, NY, in conjunction with the Lancaster Elks Lodge. This organization serves all of WNY. Donations for clothing, working appliances, TVs, radios, etc. can be dropped off at the Depew Municipal Building, 1st floor in a container provided for that purpose. Post 1528 will collect all items and deliver them to the shelter. Some clothing items needed are: Shirts, pants, hats, baseball caps, gloves, boots, belts, coats & jackets, NEW underwear & socks, etc. Special thanks to Bob Sharpe and Dick Bulman for bringing this to our attention. Well done! VETERAN S DAY SERVICES On Sunday, November 11, 2012, Veteran s Day Services will be held at either the VFW or Vet s Park Gazebo. Post members will muster at the Post parking lot at 1030. PAGE 4 POST 1528 CONTINUES WITH GRAVES REGISTRATION PROJECT At our September and October meetings, further discussion took place regarding Graves Registration and what records were available as to the location of our veteran s graves. Commander Schu said he has obtained many records in electronic format and continues to receive help from the Lancaster Historical Society. This would include Lancaster Rural, St. Augustine s, St. Mary s, Blessed Sacrament and St. Adalberts. D. Krupski, Graves Registration Chairman, stated he will continue to contact the cemeteries and advance this effort and has compiled a list of known graves at St. Augustine s Cemetery. The list will now be entered in an electronic database. All lists will be shared with any Posts and veteran s organizations who desire it and all lists will be available electronically when all is done. The Erie County American Legion has also taken on a similar effort to our Post. If anyone has information that may be pertinent, please contact : Don Krupski at: 716 684-6740 or Jake Schu at: 716 440-3302 E-mail: jschu@depewlegion.org Remember, every veteran is entitled to have a service by our Post at the wake and/or cemetery; and a plaque or marker on their grave. The family must request this from the funeral director, who must then pass this on to our Post. Please pass this on to anyone you know. If you have lost a veteran and have not requested a marker, please contact us with the appropriate grave location information. LANCASTER LOCATION FOR A VA CEMETERY Commander Schu attended a Lancaster Town Board meeting on September 4th and addressed the board regarding an article in the Lancaster Bee, regarding locating a new VA cemetery in Lancaster. The article stated that the Town Supervisor, Dino Fidoli, did not want the cemetery here. Commander Schu told the board that he hoped veterans could sway them to see our side and that it would be an honor to have it here. He asked the board to remember that there would be no Town if it were not for the veterans we want to bury in this cemetery. Mr. Fidoli stated this was not the case and that the VA only presented one choice for him to consider. The choice would put the cemetery in a commercial business park and remove the property from the tax roles. Mr. Fidoli stated he has responded to the VA with an alternate location recommendation that would put the cemetery on property formerly owned by the Buffalo Rod Gun Club on 132 acres on Genesee St. Commander Schu stated that wherever they put it, we will make it work. Mr. Fidoli then said he would continue to work on this and that he would also consider it an honor to have the cemetery in Lancaster. He said that N. Tonawanda and Corfu are also under consideration and were given more than one location to choose from as compared to Lancaster, who was given only one. WHERE EVER THEY PUT IT, WE WILL MAKE IT WORK

PAGE 5 NEW ERIE, DISTRICT AND DEPARTMENT COMMANDERS The Erie County American Legion elected Peter Hurd as the 2013 Commander, Al O Donnell as District 8 Commander and Timothy Van Patton as NY Department Commander at the conventions this year. Commander Van Patton is from Amherst. The new National Commander is James E. Koutz of Booneville, IN. 2012 MEMBERSHIP REPORT BY DON SCHRAM I would like to thank all of the Post members who assisted me with membership this last year. For the second year in a row, we achieved 100% of the goal assigned to us by National Headquarters. Members who directly assisted me were Commander Schu, George Frederick and Bob Sharpe. We can really use more member help with this important committee. Please contact me if you have any time to assist. The 2013 membership year, which runs from July 2012 through June 2013, is off to a good start. As of October 1, 2012, we have 108 members that have renewed., which constitutes 70.5% of our goal of 153. If you have not renewed, please send your dues in by November 1st. Remember, the Post is offering you $20.00 off of your 2013 dues if you sign up a new member. Thank you! LEGION BASEBALL Post 1528 s baseball team will again play in 2013, as voted on by the membership at out October meeting. Check the calendar on our web site for the schedule. The team played approximately 18 games in 2012. Our Coach, Tony Sekuterski, address the membership at our October meeting and outlined his thoughts for fund raising opportunities. We are looking to reduce the financial burden on the Post through these efforts. More information on fund raisers and schedules will be forthcoming. We ask for your support when details are finalized. Suggestions included the team sponsoring a chicken dinner, Bison s night out and the team raising $1,000.00 We thank Committee Chairman George Frederick for his efforts. George will continue to work with the team for 2013. Thank you George and Coach Sekuterski.
