The Zombie run is a family friendly 5k run/walk through the heart of UNI's campus that the ROTC hosts annually. Each participant began the race with two balloons with the goal to prevent zombies from popping the balloons. Along the way, the participants encountered zombies and did their best to make it through the entire course without getting infected (getting balloons popped) Proceeds from the run will support UNI ROTC cadets by providing funds to compete in events such as Ranger Challenge, the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge and the annual ROTC Military Ball. 1 October UNI Homecoming

January 2016 Page 3 Fall Awards Ceremony The 2015 Fall Awards Ceremony for the ROTC was held to recognize those Cadets that excelled throughout the fall semester. The Cadets were given awards based off of their academic performance, physically fitness test performance, and community support. The ROTC Cadets were given plaques, certificates, and various gifts to reward them for their hard work throughout the semester. Our Cadets will continue to strive for greatness on their journeys to become commissioned officers in the United States Army.

Veterans Week Memorial 5K Run On November 13 UNI Hosted its annual Veterans week 5K run. The run is open to all military personnel as well as civilians. This year, Cadets, recruiters from the Waterloo recruiting station, and UNI faculty/staff participated in the run across and around campus. UNI ROTC hosts several 5K runs during the school year. The next scheduled 5K run is Saturday, April 23 at 0700 with the Army JROTC program at Waterloo East High School to commemorate the 100th anniversary of ROTC. Contact: any of our Staff, Cadre, or Cadets to find out more details. DECEMBER COMMISSIONING CEREMONY During the Fall semester of 2015 UNI ROTC said farewell and good luck to two of its two newest 2nd Lieutenants. 2LT Catie Maher and 2LT Ken Voorhees graduated from the University of Northern Iowa on December 19th. Friends and family joined the Cadets to congratulate and celebrate the achievement of commissioning as a Second Lieutenant and advancing their careers in the Iowa National Guard. Both Lieutenants will serve in the 334th Brigade Support Battalion. Their new commander, Lieutenant Colonel Chad Stone of the 334th Brigade Support Battalion, was the guest speaker and welcomed them to the Army, the Iowa National Guard and his unit as newly commissioned officers.

ESTABLISHING THE UNI ROTC ALUMNI PROGRAM As most of you know 2016 marks the 30th year of the UNI ROTC program as a host program. We could not think of a better time to fully engage the Alumni and develop our own Alumni Association. We have created a basic set of bylaws to get us started, which was approved by the initial association board. This year s board consists of: President: CPT Matthew Parrino (Class of 2005) Vice President: CPT Jared Parmater (Class of 2004) Treasurer: CPT Justin Foote (Class of 2008) Secretaries: 1LT Austin Reichle (Class of 2014) ALUMNI PROGRAM GOALS The association s goal is to provide support and mentorship to the Cadets of the Panther Battalion. This association is for alumni, friends and family of the Panther Battalion. It is ran by alumni but all-inclusive to every supporter of the program. We will hold a yearly event geared at bringing alumni, friends and families back to campus in support of the ROTC Program. Our vision for this is a homecoming tailgate, dinner, or golf tournament. This event will be tied to a West Gym open house and/or leadership seminar for the current Cadets. This year as our first year we want to keep it simple and plan to have an open house prior to the Military Ball for anyone attending on 27 FEB. We will be on hand to discuss the association and detail projects the association could sponsor for the program. If you attend the Military Ball we will have a special place setting noting your graduation class year. Let s see which class has the most alumni participants. CPT Matt Parrino, UNI ROTC Alumni Association President matthew.parrino@uni.edu (319) 273-6337

JOINING THE ALUMNI PROGRAM As you can see, we have reached out to local alumni to fill key positions your current board. This process will be voted upon in the coming years per the programs rules. All gifts and dues to the program are paid through the UNI Foundations page, which is tax deductible. This year s dues are $20, they are collected through the UNI Foundations Page. Just go to https://www.adv.uni.edu/foundation/pledgeform.aspx and in the other category type in "Military Science Fund for Excellence". Your dues for this year will be used to fund an event for next year and projects. CONTACT INFO I welcome all suggestions for improving the association and supporting the program. Please contact me any time: matthew.parrino@uni.edu / (319) 273-6337.
