Summer 2013 VIRGINIA ASSOCIATION OF ASSESSING OFFICERS The Quarterly Newsletter of Virginia s Assessment Professionals A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT The 58th VAAO Education Seminar was held July 17-19, 2013 at the Charlottesville Omni. The response to the new location was overwhelmingly positive. I would like to thank our attendees, presenters and committee members for a great event. We had 308 registered attendees this year. We were pleased to recognize five new IAAO designees at the Seminar. This is the most designees we have had since the VAAO won the Virginia Cup in 2000. Hats off the PDP Committee Chairman George Barham for his enthusiasm (and for earning his AAS designation)! Next year s Education Seminar will be held July 16-18, 2014. We have opened the on-line registration for the Annual Conference. This event will be October 30, 31 and November 1, 2013 at the McLean/Tysons Corner Hilton. Conference information will be available at http://vaao.org/conferenceseminar/events-registration/. One challenge as VAAO President is filling all of our committee assignments. Bill Marchand, President Elect, would like to hear from you if you are interested in being on a committee. You can find Bill s email address on the Board/Committee page of the VAAO website. The International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO) will be holding their annual Conference in Grand Rapids, MI August 25-19. We hope that Virginia will be wellrepresented at this event. Please note that the Awards Committee is seeking nominations for awards to be presented at the Annual Conference. This year, several individuals have gone above and beyond in making this year a success. Please review the criteria for the various awards in this issue of the Network and contact the Awards Committee so we can recognize our fellow members for their hard work. Larry Mackereth, CAE VAAO President 2012-2013

VAAO Elgin Pistol McMillian Scholarship Recipients I cannot express my gratitude to the VAAO for awarding me the scholarship, allowing me to attend such an important learning opportunity. Without the scholarship, it would not have been possible. The importance of continuing education and the IAAO designation program is a vital part of what we do and I am honored to have been chosen for this award. With Sincere Gratitude, Brenda J. Setelin I am sending this letter to thank you for the 2013 VAAO Elgin Pistol McMillian Scholarship I was awarded. It was truly a privilege to be chosen as a recipient of this award. Your generosity has allowed me to further my education cost free in a way I may not have been able to do otherwise. I truly value the knowledge I learned at the class, and look forward to continuing in my education and using it in real world jobs and scenarios. I had a great time at the University of Mary Washington and really feel like I gained a lot from the course. It was as practical as I hoped it would be and I enjoyed it as much as I anticipated I would.thank you again for your kindness. I can t wait until the day comes where I can be as generous to others as you have been to me. Kyle Pinegar Thank you for the scholarship which allowed me to attend the Advanced Assessors' classes at Mary Washington University. It was a fun and interesting week. As I felt well cared for with all the delicious snacks and even the evacuation to the basement due to the tornado warning. New friendships were made and knowledge gained which will assist my assessing career. Thank you again for the wonderful opportunity provided by the scholarship. Janet N. Jones Dear VAAO, I definitely felt honored and privileged to have received one of the scholarships offered June 10-14, 2013 at the Mary Washington, Stafford Campus, Fredericksburg, VA. It was a very intense course and I gained an ample amount of knowledge about Real Property Appraisals. VAAO is a great organization who continues to provide continuing education to its members. I am very thankful to be a member and grateful to have received this scholarship. I have been the Commissioner of the Revenue of Buchanan County for almost 2 years and am here to provide public service to others. VAAO has gave an opportunity to learn more about the assessment profession as well as meet other assessors throughout the USA. Anna Ruth Horn Dear VAAO, I would like to thank the VAAO for providing me with the scholarship to attend the 2013 Advanced Assessor s school. I would not have been able to attend without the scholarship, due to budget restraints. I enjoyed the chance to meet other appraisers from different localities across the state and country. I hope to attend again next year. Brian Hall Thank you for the scholarship. I appreciate the opportunity. I found the class very interesting. Rhonda Richardson
