MT 18:15-20 Special Collection Hurricane Harvey Relief A special collection will be taken up at St. Aloysius and in all the Churches of our Diocese on the weekend of September 9-10, 2017 to aid those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Checks should be made out to St. Aloysius Church and in the memo line, Hurricane Harvey Relief. We know all too well of the devastation that Hurricanes and other natural disasters can bring to life, property, livelihood and security. September 10, 2017 Dear friends, Our Challenge Friendship does not always mean avoiding conflict. There are times when one friend has to speak out against the behavior of another friend. But such conflicts born of love are not intended to destroy friendship but to save it. St. Paul was clear that a relationship based on love could withstand all the trials and troubles of daily living. All the rules governing human relationships finally come down to one obligation: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus set high standards for his disciples. Perhaps the hardest rule of all was his demand that we take the initiative in setting things right when we have a falling out with others, no matter who s to blame. Restoring love is more important than assessing blame or protecting pride. We would be spared a great deal of life s grief if we followed the biblical way of dealing with conflict. Most of us nurse our hurt feelings, waiting for the person who wronged us to apologize. But Jesus taught that the wounded party should take the initiative in working things out when conflicts threaten a relationship. People inflict a lot of misery on each other because they do not work through the conflicts that accompany all human relationships. Life is too short and love is too precious to let petty grievances or even serious betrayals rob us of our friends. Henry Ford is reputed to have said: If I had my life to do over, I would go about collecting friends. Friends are the most precious possession we have in life. What would our lives be without friends? Maintaining friendships may be the most important thing we can do to fill our lives with meaning and happiness. Have a good week! September 2017 Dear People of God of the Diocese of Baton Rouge, Your pastor will be attending two mandatory Priest Retreats from Tuesday, September 19, through Thursday, September 21, and Monday, October 2, through Thursday, October 5. The September retreat is the Louisiana Priests Convention held every four years which will take the place of the Diocesan Annual Priests Formation Days held in January. The October retreat is the Clergy Fall Retreat mandatory every other year. I know this may affect certain regular ministries, such as daily Mass and funerals. The daily Mass schedule in your parish can be adjusted as determined by your parish priest to meet the needs of your parish during these retreats. While this is a sacrifice, I consider this sacrifice worth making. Regarding funerals, I would ask that funerals be scheduled either before the retreat begins or after, but not during, the scheduled retreat days. If this is completely impossible, one of the deacons from the diocese can provide the needed funeral rites, namely the vigil wake, funeral without Mass and rite of committal. If a parish cannot provide a deacon to lead these services, Deacon John Veron has agreed to coordinate finding deacons who are willing to help. In this case, a parish staff member would contact the Office of the Vicar General and Deacon Veron will assist in providing a deacon for that special need. Over the years attendance at our annual Priest Retreats has been remarkably consistent. Pressing ministry could compromise and jeopardize our commitment to these special opportunities. I hope this letter helps you understand and support our priests with their commitment to their ministry. I ask that you pray for our priests and our diocese during these days, as they pray for you as well. In summary, every priest of the diocese is expected to be present and take part in these retreats. I appreciate so much your affirmation and encouragement of our clergy who give so much of their lives for our diocese. May God be generous in leading us into the future with hope. CONFIRMATION Teens confirm the fall of their junior year of high school. Preparation is required, including PSR for teens not enrolled in a Catholic school. Adult confirmation is hosted annually for anyone over 18. Please contact the parish office for more detailed information. MARRIAGE Couples are asked to contact the priest at the beginning of the period of engagement at least six months prior to the projected date of the marriage. CARE OF THE SICK Communion is brought to the sick weekly and hospital visits made weekly. Families of the sick are encouraged to notify the parish office. Altar Server Training Children and youth of the parish, 5th grade & above, are welcome to join us for new altar server trainings over the next month. New servers are required to attend one. No advance sign up is required. All trainings will be held in the Church & snacks will be provided. Children who attend St. Aloysius School should come immediately following dismissal from school.
