COMMANDER S INTENT The 42d Air Base Wing is steeped in a histry f excellence and innvatin. Frm rts in the Wright Brther s flying schl t the 42d Bmbardment Grup s herics in Wrld War II s Pacific theater t tday s missin f supprting intellectual and leadership develpment f all Airmen, Team 42 has cemented itself as critical t the success f the Air Frce. In tday s cmpetitive internatinal envirnment, the educatin f ur natin s fighting frces is critical t missin success. Team 42 prides itself n prviding tailred, practive supprt t Air University and its charge t deliver wrld-class educatin t Airmen while furthering the Air Frce s Cntinuum f Learning and Frce Develpment initiatives. As Air University cntinues its transfrmatin, the 42 ABW will prvide the necessary fundatins in safety and security, facilities, infrastructure, medical and quality-f-life enhancements t ensure success. Team 42 will als cntinue t diligently supprt ur ver 40 missin partners. We will instill a culture f cntinuus perfrmance imprvement, seeking feedback and adjusting fire t imprve missin executin. Airmen are ur mst imprtant resurce. Team 42 values the prfessinal develpment f all Airmen and will cntinue t emphasize that acrss all demgraphics. We will strive t imprve the quality f life fr all Airmen and their families, t include fitness and nutritin, mrale activities, drm and husing imprvements, educatin, child care and medical care. 42d air base wing Histry Maxwell s histry began with the Wright Brthers and the dawn f flight in the United States. In February 1910, Wilbur Wright pened the first civilian flying schl in the United States n an abandned cttn plantatin near Mntgmery. It lasted nly ten weeks. In April 1918, the War Department established Aircraft and Engine Repair Dept #3 n the same land as the frmer Wright flying schl t repair training aircraft at Air Service airfields in the Sutheast United States. After the war ended, the dept, despite curtailed wrklad and persnnel, managed t avid clsure. In Nvember 1922, the War Department renamed the dept Maxwell Field after Secnd Lieutenant William C. Maxwell, wh had died in an airplane crash in the Philippines in August 1920. In early 1931, the War Department relcated the Air Crps Tactical Schl frm Langley Field, Virginia, t Maxwell Field and began a majr cnstructin prgram t prvide academic facilities, supprt facilities and husing fr the significant increase in persnnel at the installatin. During the 1930s, the ACTS faculty and students develped the tactical airpwer and strategic bmbing dctrines peratinalized during Wrld War II. With war cluds gathering ver Eurpe and the Far East, the War Department suspended the schl in June 1941 (and clsed it in Octber 1942) and pened the Sutheast Air Crps Army Air Frce Training Center (SEATC), later Eastern Flying Training Cmmand, headquartered at Maxwell Field. The center versaw ver 100 flight schls at Maxwell Field and airfields acrss the Sutheast United States. These schls graduated ver 100,000 flight cadets, including thse f many Allied air frces and Tuskegee Airmen, by September 1945. In March 1946, the Army Air Frce senir leaders established Air University t cntinue the dctrine develpment and prfessinal military educatin f the pre-war ACTS. Since then, AU has evlved int hundreds f individual rganizatins acrss the cuntry. Knwn tday as the intellectual and leadership-develpment center f the Air Frce, AU prvides Air Frce enlisted, fficer and DOD civilian prfessinal military educatin, prfessinal cntinuing educatin and graduate educatin, and fficer cmmissining training. As AU grew, s did Maxwell AFB. Since Octber 1994, the hst wing fr Maxwell-Gunter is the 42d Air Base Wing, which traces its histry t the 42d Bmbardment Grup (Medium) f Wrld War II and the 42d Bmbardment Wing (Heavy) f the Cld War. Tday, the wing serves mre than 10,500 military Airmen, civilians, cntractrs and students annually and supprts ver 22,800 family members and ver 52,600 military retirees in the River Regin f Alabama. In Nvember 1940, the Army Air Frces pened nearby Gunter Field at Mntgmery s frmer city airprt t hst a phase 2 flight schl. After the end f the war, Gunter went thrugh a number f transitins. Between 1957 and 1966, the Aerspace Defense Cmmand perated a Semi-Autmatic Grund Envirnment Data Center at Gunter, which linked air surveillance radar statins arund the suthern Atlantic and Gulf f Mexic casts int a centralized center fr reginal air defense. In March 1992, the Air Frce changed the installatin s status t Gunter Annex under Maxwell AFB. Tday, Gunter Annex is hme t mst f the Air Frce s enlisted prfessinal military and specialized educatin prgrams. Maxwell Air Frce Base has a lng and distinguished heritage that extends back t the earliest days f aviatin in the United States. Since its establishment a hundred years ag, the base has prvided a significant and grwing presence in Central Alabama and has greatly cntributed t the natinal defense f the United States.
