*Blue Notes* Fall Edition 2015* *Page 1* 2 nd Annual Gamma Alpha Sigma Educational Foundation Father / Daughter Dance A Night to Remember: A Dance with My Father We want to thank all who participated in the 2 nd Annual Gamma Alpha Sigma Educational Foundation Father Daughter / Dance. The event took place on June 13 th, 2015 at the Mediterranean Party Center in Bedford, Ohio. This year s event modelled last year s with dinner, music and guest speaker, who this year would be Rev. Paul Sadler of Mt Zion. Many thanks to brothers Ed. Long, George Baker, Ike Lewis and everyone else who worked tirelessly on that committee to make this annual gathering of men and their daughters A Night to Remember. (From left to right) Brothers Kimrick Crawford, Marricio Wilson and Michael Brown with their daughters at the 2 nd Annual Father Daughter Dance

*Blue Notes* Fall Edition 2015* *Page 2* Fox 8 News 9 th Annual Stuff the Bus School Supply Drive We want to thank all the brothers who came together to help donate book bags and school supplies for the Fox 8 News 9 th Annual Stuff the Bus which was held on July 30 th, 2015. WJW Fox 8 along with the Cleveland Kids in Need Resource Center collected pens, paper, book bags, scissors, rulers and pretty much anything and everything related to school supplies and materials you can think of for needy children in northeast Ohio. The brothers of Gamma Alpha Sigma quickly mobilized to do our part after getting word of this year s event from Bro. Ed Long. After getting the word to participate, the chapter rallied together and was able to donate 75 book bags stuffed with school supplies and even had a small spot on the morning newscast to present our donation. Once again thanks to the brothers who participated by donating supplies and, to the brothers who were able to make it to the news station that morning to present our donation to the sponsoring organizations. Next year the goal of 100 book bags has been set, but I am sure I speak for the chapter in saying that we will surpass that mark as we continue to be a positive force in our community, exemplifying our principles of brotherhood, scholarship and service

*Blue Notes* Fall Edition 2015* *Page 4* 2015 11 th Congressional District Annual Labor Day Parade & Celebration Labor Day September 7 th, 2015 was a hot day but the brothers of Phi Beta Sigma showed up anyways as we walked the parade route from 147 th and Kinsman starting at Andrew J. Rickoff Elementary School and ending at Luke Easter Park on MLK Blvd. Shout out to the brothers, Sigma Beta s and, all who showed up to participate in this year s parade. As usual the brothers chanted and stepped as the Sigma Beta s tossed candy to those sitting along the parade route. Looking forward to next year s parade as the chapter exec board will be brainstorming on a couple ideas to make our participation in the parade a bit more memorable and entertaining and also drive participation from the rest of the brotherhood.

*Blue Notes* Fall Edition 2015* *Page 5* Baldwin Wallace University 2015 Meet the Greeks Thanks to brothers Mike Brown, Taurean Adams and Sam Morris for showing up at this year s Meet the Greeks at Baldwin Wallace University on September 3 rd. The brothers in attendance gave information on the frat including our national & local initiatives / programs and even had a chance to talk to a few of the BW student s one on one who had interest in learning a bit more about our organization and Greek life overall. The importance of having brothers participate in the different Meet the Greek events that are hosted at our local colleges is to hopefully drive interest for the undergraduate chapter we are in charge of which is Beta Nu, citywide collegiate chapter at Cleveland State University. Table set up @ Baldwin Wallace Gamma Alpha Sigma Chapter My Brother s Keeper Circle In keeping in line with the national initiatives set forth by the fraternity and many things going on in the lives of our chapter members, a couple brothers from our chapter came up with the idea where brothers could come together and truly discuss some of the issues taking place in our day to day activities, bounce ideas and thoughts off of one another who may have dealt with similar experiences and, come up with possible solutions and / or advice to the problems. The first My Brother s Keeper Circle took place on July 1 st, 2015 at chapter president Bro. Michael Brown house where the brothers in attendance got a chance to discuss various issues and get some guidance from the others in the room. The next meeting has not been planned yet, but be on the lookout as this in house initiative moves forward amongst our chapter. As brothers and as men we may not necessarily think we need or want to talk about personal issues affecting our lives but be assured as this is what we should be able to do as fraternity brothers, in being able to come together and get sound counsel from one another in dealing with the stresses of this thing called life.

*Blue Notes* Fall Edition 2015* *Page 6* Cleveland State University Fall 2015 Freshman Move In I am sure we all remember the first day we stepped foot on our respected college campus and moved into our dormitory. The freshman moving in at Cleveland State University had a little extra help as the brothers of Phi Beta Sigma were there to assist and make the move in process a little easier. Brother s Jamie Taylor, Sam Morris and Issa Arney were able to go down to CSU on August 22 nd and assist many of the incoming freshman move their belongings into their dorms. Thanks to the brothers who were able to go as we have participated in CSU Freshman move-in for a couple of years now. Brother s Jamie Taylor, Sam Morris and Issa Arney along with members of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. helping out at Cleveland State University

*Blue Notes* Fall Edition 2015* *Page 7* Sigma Beta Club Inaugural Super Saturday Fundraiser We want to thank all who came out on June 27 th for the Sigma Beta Club s Inaugural Super Saturday Fundraiser. Mother nature wasn t necessarily on our side that day as we had to cancel the car wash due to thundershowers that day, but we did still meet up at Buffalo Wild Wings and salvaged the day over good food and good company. Many of the Sigma Beta s came out, along with their parents and brothers of the fraternity. The club ended up making $89.45 for their Dining to Donate efforts at BW3 s that day. Next year the hope is that the weather is a bit more favorable as the last car wash the club did back in 2013 yielded profits close to $1000.00! Thanks to all who supported and we hope to do even more during the 2 nd Annual Super Saturday Fundraiser next year.

*Blue Notes* Fall Edition 2015* *Page 8* Shout out to all the bros. who made the trip down I-71 to attend this year s Ohio Blue and White Weekend in Cincinnati, Ohio back in August. On Friday night Blue and White met up for Bowling across the state line in Kentucky. Saturday would continue the weekend with community service that morning at one the local food pantries with the annual BBQ / Picnic taking place not to long after. Saturday night the family would kick it downtown and to conclude the weekend everyone attended church services on Sunday morning. For all who went, it was good to see old faces, new members of our respectful chapters and celebrate the legacies of Sigma and Zeta in the state of Ohio. Ohio Blue and White Weekend 2015 Highlights Blue and White Holding it down during the picnic in Cincinnati, Ohio

*Blue Notes* Fall Edition 2015* *Page 9* Conclave 2015 Little Rock, Arkansas I Am My Brother s Keeper Conclave 2015 in Little Rock, Arkansas was the biggest and most attended Conclave in the history of Phi Beta Sigma. In coming off a historic centennial celebration the year before, one would expect such a showing of Sigma s, still riding the wave of energy from 2014. This year s focus for the Conclave (and efforts of the fraternity as a whole moving forward) as set by International President Johnathan A. Mason and his administration is I Am My Brother s Keeper (IAMBK). In mirroring the initiatives and policies set forth by the Obama administration, the fraternity has taken a fixed stance on mentoring and teaching our young men of color. With all the news lines tagged around young men of color being killed by cops, dealing with poverty and educational issues and not having strong male role models in their lives, the fraternity has taken to the offensive in driving initiatives and programs that will allow us to truly be our brother s keeper. Many other highlights and national pushes came out of Conclave 2015 including but not limited to: *National Sigma Beta Club Leadership Conference (Independent focus during Conclave for the Sigma Beta Club. Alumni chapters are being asked to start clubs and hone in on activities within the club such as the rise and thunder curriculum) *Gift of $20,200 was given to our sisters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. to go towards their centennial celebration efforts *The Adopt-A-School initiative being moved forward full throttle in having every Alumni chapter adopt a school in their city.

*Blue Notes* Fall Edition 2015* *Page 10* Shout out to Gamma Alpha Sigma Bros. Lee Tate and Mark Moon Neubauer who were able to take part in the historic Conclave. One can only imagine the experience brothers had and loads of information that was taken back from the Conclave as members returned to their cities getting ready to further the mission of our great Fraternity!
