LEL BOLO April 2015 edition A New Look for a New Day! There is an old saying in law enforcement, Cops don t like change or complacency and that holds true for your Florida LEL Team as well. Even good change is stressful; the LEL Team made great strides to bring you, our partners in traffic safety, better service. In October of 2014, the Florida LEL Program moved to the University of North Florida at the Institute of Police Technology & Management. A positive move in the right direction to merge both IPTM and the LEL Team, two very respected and professional organizations, under the direction of the Florida Department of Transportation s State Safety Office. This merger allowed the seven LEL s access to more high tech management with inventory, day-to-day operations, promotion of the four Challenges we manage and more features to come in regards to web based reporting, training, social media, and a list-serve. Your LEL Team is the program to watch! With seven LEL s and a State Coordinator, there is a combined history of law enforcement experience of over 100 years in the business, something we feel is important in providing you up-todate and real life exposure to what our officers are experiencing today. Our LEL s each have a specialty that is available to all of you, regardless of which region your jurisdiction is in. From computer applications, DUI squad management, motorcycle training and enforcement, and public information specialist, we have it all and it is available to you. The LEL s specialize in traffic safety issues and resources to make your enforcement campaigns and problem identification easier target and manage. On behalf of the entire team, thank you for your continued participation in making Florida s roadways safer one traffic stop at a time! We look forward to an amazing year with Florida s finest.

Click It or Ticket Florida National Campaign Wave The third and final wave of the Florida Click It or Ticket Challenge runs May 18, 2015 through May 31, 2015, and coincides with the National Click It or Ticket Enforcement campaign. Agencies from all over the Sunshine State actively participated in the November 2014, and the March 2015 two-week enforcement waves. We saw a reduction in injury crashes and fatality crashes associated with the increased use of occupant restraint devices and enhanced enforcement efforts. The seat belt usage rose across the state during these time frames, indicating that once again, enforcement saves lives! Agencies are encouraged to visit http://www.trafficsafetymarketing.gov/ciot for all your Click It or Ticket campaign needs such as posters, banners, social media tools, press releases, and commercials. All of the resources are available free of charge, we encourage you to have your public information officer and social media managers utilize the materials to help spread the message that during this time frame, Florida s law enforcement officers will be strictly enforcing Florida s seat belt and child restraint laws.. Day and Night!

Florida Law Enforcement Challenge The 2014 Florida Law Enforcement Challenge report is due electronically by midnight, April 30, 2015. Your LEL Team is available to assist you in submitting the best possible Challenge, showcasing your enforcement efforts and the positive results experienced when a comprehensive traffic enforcement program is put into place. Key points to remember to maximize your overall Challenge report: Make sure your policies and directives address the importance of traffic safety within your agency and your community. Training your personnel in an academy setting, legal bulletins, clerk of the court/state attorney updates, roll call videos and LEL provided materials count toward agency training. Recognize your top officers in regards to DUI, Occupant Protection, Speed Enforcement, Motorcycle Enforcement, Distracted Driving, Pedestrian/Bike Enforcement, and the Saved by the Belt program. Maintain a relationship with your LEL by attending meetings and participating in all applicable LEL Challenges and highway safety campaigns. Provide agency wide enforcement data for all of 2014. Utilize the FIRES website data to document your crash numbers.

2015 Florida Law Enforcement Challenge Awards Ceremony This year s event takes place at 9:00 am, on Friday, July 17, 2015, at the Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel in Orlando. A vendor sponsored reception to showcase a few of the items available in the online catalog begins Thursday evening, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, July 16, 2015. Winning agencies will receive their official invitation in the coming weeks. Are you following us on FACEBOOK? The Florida LEL Facebook page has become one of the widely followed and fastest growing law enforcement Facebook pages.
