COMPLIMENTS OF: HolidayBowl.com VOLUME 7 ISSUE #1 AUG 19 - AUG 26, 2017 THE 2017 COLLEGE FOOTBALL SEASON By Jim Gumm Owner / Editor of THE BLITZ The 2017 college football season is upon us and this season looks like there are as many as 12 to 15 schools that have the talent to make it into the playoffs. Even though just four teams make it into the playoffs each season, there should be great drama in most of the conferences. Nobody will ever convince me that any sport has a better regular season that college football. Regardless of the on field won-loss record that a team might have, there is always excitement each Saturday. Go ask a fan of Arizona & Arizona State on how important it is to win the Territorial Cup when they play the Duel In The Desert rivalry every year. It doesn t matter how the season has gone because the winner of that game has bragging rights for 365 days. Now a rivalry like Alabama- Auburn or Ohio State-Michigan might be playing for bragging rights as well as a spot in the conference championship games, so it magnifies the importance of the game. In college football, game #1 can not be taken for granted because it could be very costly to getting in the playoffs. Ask Oklahoma, because if the Sooners had beaten Houston in game #1 last year, they probably would have made it into the playoffs. Speaking of the Sooners, it will be interesting to watch Lincoln Riley in his first season as the Oklahoma head coach. Following a legend like Bob Stoops is always tough. Over the years we have seen guys like Ray Perkins follow Bear Bryant, Earle Bruce follow Woody Hayes, Jimbo Fisher follow Bobby Bowden, Frank Solich follow Tom Osborne and Gary Moeller follow Bo Schembechler. Some found success while others found the pressure too much to handle. How will Ole Miss hold up with Matt Luke as the head coach in 2017 after Hugh Freeze was forced to resign on July 20th after the school found a troubling pattern of calls to a female escort service? Freeze had led Ole Miss to a couple of big wins over Alabama and a Sugar Bowl championship in his 5 season in Oxford but the program had slipped NICK SABAN TALKS SCHEDULING Nick Saban knows the current college football playoff system will continue to evolve, and he has some ideas on how to better the sport while keeping fans engaged. According to Saban, FBS schools should play the majority of their games in their conference and have remaining games played in other equally competitive conferences. "We should play all teams in the Power 5 conferences," Saban said. "If we did that, then if we were going to have bowl games, we should do the bowl games just like they do in the NCAA basketball tournament not by record but by some kind of power rating that gets you in a bowl game. "If we did that, people would be a little less interested in maybe bowl games and more interested in expanding the playoff." Currently, the College Football Playoff has four teams that face off in two semifinal games, with the winners squaring off for the national title. Saban wants to expand the playoff to 12 teams to make it more like a March Madness-style tournament. By doing that, the bowl eligibility will be held at a higher standard and teams won't get to a bowl by winning just six games. "You eliminate the six wins to get in a bowl game and now you can have a different kind of scheduling that is more fan interest, more good games, bring out the better quality team," Saban said, "Whether you expand the playoff or have a system where it's like now -- we take the top 12 teams and decide what bowl game they go to just take them all. "In this scenario, there would be more opportunity to play more teams in your league, as well as to have more games that people would be interested in. We all play three or four games a year now that nobody's really interested in. We'd have more good games, more public interest, more fan interest, better TV." FOOTBALL TIDBITS Michigan rushed for 41 touchdowns in 2016, most among Power-5 teams and its most since having 43 in 1976. Under former coach Hugh Freeze, Ole Miss was the only school to beat Alabama twice in the previous 5 seasons. Notre Dame holds the FBS record for most consecutive winning seasons, 42 from 1889-1932 (Notre Dame did not field a team in 1890-1891). Michigan and Ohio State have met in 44 ranked matchups, which is the most of any rivalry in college football. Each team has 20 wins and there have been 4 ties. to just 5-7 last year. Matt Luke played center at Ole Miss from 1995-1998 and had been the offensive coordinator there since 2012. Looking ahead to the 2017 season, it looks like traditional power teams are once again the teams to beat. Our preseason top 10, consists of schools that have been national championship contenders for the past 40 years. Other than Clemson, the common factor with most of the top teams is a returning starting quarterback. Alabama has Jalen Hurts, Ohio State has J.T. Barrett, USC has Sam Darnold who some project as the #1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Florida State returns Deondre Francois and Oklahoma has Baker Mayfield. Four of our preseason top 5 will go at, it in the first 2 weeks of the season. Florida State will take on Alabama in the opening weekend of the season in Atlanta s new Mercedes-Benz Stadium while Oklahoma travels to Columbus to take on the Buckeyes of Ohio State in week two. Obviously the winners of those two titanic games will have a leg up on the competition as far as their place in the rankings but don t count out the teams that lose because if they were to run the table, they could be in very good shape by the time December rolls around. Here are our fearless predictions. Our Heisman Trophy preseason pick is USC quarterback Sam Darnold but we do think that Louisville QB Lamar Jackson could join Archie Griffin as a two-time winner. Baker Mayfield could put up huge numbers for the Sooners and be in contention as well. Our dark horse is Oklahoma State QB Mason Rudolph. When the college football post season is said and done, we think that Nick Saban s Alabama Crimson Tide will take on Urban Meyer and his Ohio State Buckeyes for the National Championship on Jan 8, 2018 in Atlanta s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Two future Hall of Fame coaches leading two of the greatest programs in college football history in the title game. It simply does not get better than that. VS Bragging Rights WEEKLY ASSOCIATED PRESS POLLS Even though we are now in the era of the College Football Playoff, the weekly polls and rankings still have a significant place in the sport. This past season, the College Football Playoff Selection Committee released their own Top 25 beginning the last week in October and that poll was the one that the media gravitated towards just like when the BCS Ratings that were released from 1998-2013. However, no poll or ranking has the tradition and history like the Associated Press Poll which began in 1936. Regardless of the ultimate impact that the BCS Ratings had or the impact that the CFP Selection Committee Rankings will have, the weekly Associated Press Poll will continue to have weight. Why? Because of the historical importance it has had on college football and, frankly, I believe that it influences other polls and rankings. Everyone remembers the Waterford Crystal Ball Trophy that the BCS Champion received and the new College Football Playoff Trophy that now is awarded to the Playoff Champion but the Associated Press still awards their trophy to the final #1 team and as long as the Associated Press has a diverse group of media members ranking the Top 25 teams in college football every week, it will continue as one of the great traditions of the sport. In this issue of THE BLITZ we give the most detailed history of the weekly AP Polls available. This research of the weekly AP Polls was done by Jim Gumm through many years of researching and compiling every weekly AP Football Poll ever released. ALL-TIME CONFERENCE APPEARANCES IN ALL 1,119 WEEKLY AP POLLS (1936-2016) In the history of the weekly Associated Press Polls there have been 28 different conferences represented. There have also been schools that were Independent as well as 17 World War II Service teams that pretty much dominated college football during that time. We list the total times each conference was ranked. We show the Pacific Coast Conference and the Pac-12 as being two different leagues. The Pacific-12, however, includes PCC stats and standings in their history as their own but we believe that they are 2 separate conferences similar to the Big 8 Conference and the Big 12 Conference. We contacted the American Athletic Conference and inquired as how they view the Big East Conference and this was their response Thanks for reaching out. It s a bit complicated when it comes to the old Big East history. From a legal standpoint, the old Big East is the same entity as the current American Athletic Conference simply with a new name. We did transfer all records for sports other than football to the new league (the current Big East). For football, while we retain claim to all Big East records, we decided that it made more sense to start from scratch with our record book as the American Athletic Conference. We didn t find much practical sense in trying to list a record from a Memphis-Houston game in the same context as a Miami-Boston College game from the early 2000s. So for our purposes, our history for all sports, including football, begins with the 2013-14 season. Due to the fact that that it is the same entity from a legal standpoint and they did, in fact technically retained the records from football, we decided to simply consider the Big East/ American as one single conference that simply changed their name. Current 2016 NCAA Division I FBS conferences are listed in BOLD CAPS. CONFERENCE 1930 s 1940 s 1950 s 1960 s 1970 s 1980 s 1990 s 2000 s 2010 s TOTALS 1. DECEMBER 28, 2017 KICKOFF AT 6:00 PM PST COLLEGE FOOTBALL S POPULARITY CONTINUES TO GROW The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame highlighted numerous powerful facts from the 2016 college football season that emphasize the strong popularity of college football among millions of fans across the country. "The already intense interest in college football continues to grow," said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. "Embracing ever changing technology, the leaders of our sport have done a spectacular job in ensuring that the fan experience not only keeps pace but sets the standard in innovation. We are grateful to the conferences, bowl games and the media for their creativity and commitment in delivering a first-class product that allows fans to experience the game in every imaginable way." DIGITAL ERA CONTINUES TO GROW: The 2016 college football season continued the increasing trend of fans watching games through means other than traditional outlets. ESPN college football games were streamed on 15,128,000 unique devices during the 2016 college football regular season, setting a new ESPN college football regular season record and surpassing last year's record by more than 17 percent.
