Holy Name of Jesus November 20, 2016 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Roman Catholic Church 6150 Allentown Boulevard Harrisburg, PA 17112-2603 PASTORAL STAFF Very Rev. Edward J. Quinlan Pastor Reverend Richard J. Mowery Parochial Vicar Deacon Joseph J. Wrabel Permanent Deacon Deacon Jerome T. Foerster Permanent Deacon MASSES Weekends: Saturday Vigil 5:00 p.m. Sunday 8:00 a.m., 10:15 a.m., 12:00 noon, 6:00 p.m. Weekdays: (Weekday schedule subject to change - please see inside bulletin) Mon-Thu.6:30 a.m., 8:00 a.m. Friday..6:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m. Saturday 8:30 a.m. CONFESSIONS Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m, 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. "God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." (Philippians 2: 9-11.) OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE The last Sunday of the year is always celebrated as the Feast of Christ the King and in each year of the liturgical cycle we are invited to ponder some aspect of Christ s rule over the church and indeed all creation. In year C we have been reading the gospel of Luke over many Sundays and have been privileged to see how the great mystery of God s universal love and mercy is revealed in the person of Jesus. It is appropriate then on this feast to focus on Jesus on the cross granting pardon to the repentant thief. For Luke this aspect of the kingdom of God has been central: Jesus has come to bring the healing forgiveness of God to all who seek it. If you are the king of the Jews then save yourself. This cry of mockery from the crowds on Calvary is worthy of our reflection on a feast such as today s. It is precisely because he is the king of the Jews, and indeed king of the whole world, that Jesus does not save himself. He is more concerned to save others. This he does, not by the majestic use of power or a dramatic manifestation of his glory, but rather through a humble giving of himself in which the mercy of God is offered to everyone in an act of overwhelming generosity. Today we celebrate a king whose wealth lies in his love for all, and whose authority is exercised through service of those who are considered the least important of all. Jesus does not seek servants who grovel before his throne in the hope of being granted favors, he is looking for disciples who can stand before the cross and see there their own worth and the worth of every other human being, and who will be prepared to do what they can to uphold the dignity of their brothers and sisters. - Excerpted from Let the Reader Understand: The Sunday Readings of Year C by Sean Goan Visit us on the web at www.holynameofjesus.com

PARISH NEWS & ACTIVITIES HAPPY FIFTH BIRTHDAY, HOLY NAME OF JESUS CHURCH! December marks the fifth anniversary for Holy Name of Jesus Parish in our new church. Many years ago, we made the commitment to build a new church that would meet the needs of our growing parish. Building Our Tomorrow. A Legacy of Faith was the motto that unified us to generously support this project. Now ten years later we are approaching the completion of the capital campaign. We are less than $200,000 away from paying off our debt service. What a great accomplishment for our parish, even during a period of national recession! Expect more announcements in the bulletin as plans are made to celebrate the Anniversary. The ambitious parish goal was to pay off the building debt by our fifth anniversary. You can help us meet that goal by the end of the year. Please consider giving a special gift to the capital campaign this holiday season. May she rest in the peace of the Lord!
