Leadership is Still Very Busy! By Katelyn Wilcox 6 th Grade Co-Historian Dear Shasta Community, It s that time of year again, when 5 th grade orientation is happening at Shasta. The second week in May, fifth grade students from Clear Lake, Irving, and Danebo will visit to tour our building with some 6 th and 7 th graders guiding them. We will have some fun activities planned to reduce anxieties about the transition to middle school. The visiting students will have an opportunity to meet our principals, counselor, and our front office staff. If you have any questions please feel free to give me a call. Sincerely, Marshaun Tucker May 7th - May 11th This is a wonderful opportunity to show our teachers how much we appreciate all they do for Shasta Middle School students. Thank You! For helping during: Lifetouch Spring Pictures: Kathryn Frombach For Academic Awards: Thank you for helping to create the awards. Your help was so valuable to our students: Angelica Williams, Yahvahn Foy, Nanci Case, Anita Kolendar, and Sheri Stapler Reward Parties: Janice Brown, Jessica Peterson, and David Roberts For helping with the Book Fair: Linda and Jennifer Peterson Every month we recognize awesome staff for what they do. We nominate one or two staff members for the Bethel Spirit Award and other events. Last month was School Library Week and we got to recognize Mrs. McBride for all that she does for Shasta. We also had Secretaries Day, a great day to show appreciation to our secretaries. That day happened to be Patty s (Shasta s Head Secretary), 70 th Birthday. We decorated her office to surprise her! We worked on a lesson about Goal Setting. We have a lot of new knowledge about goals and have set some new goals for ourselves to get done. This past month we did a candle sale for 8 th graders and their year-end activities. It was mostly for 8 th grade, but some leadership students sold candles to help them. Everyone did great and it was lots of fun. Our 8 th graders did a great job. A Fundraiser for Doernbecher Children s Hospital has begun. It is going well and we re having fun doing it. We have been preparing for a leadership workshop through OASC (Oregon Association of Student Councils). It was so much fun to prepare for; we had a great time, and got a lot done. We have a lot of upcoming projects and events going on between now and the end of the school year. We will be finishing our wonderful Doernbecher Children s Hospital Fundraiser. On May 5 th and 6 th, we will be doing a clean up around Shasta, with lots of landscape work. The OASC Conference is May 6 th & 7 th, several leadership students and Mrs. Embree will attend. We will be helping the PTO with their BBQ set up and clean up. Teacher Appreciation Week is coming up very soon, we will be showing them our appreciation, along with bus drivers, cooks, and the print shop. Make sure you show your appreciation to your teacher s, too. Our last leadership lesson for the year will be a unit on Compassion. We are critiquing our past projects. Our Historian Reports are getting done and our Historian Book is getting really full. Our 8 th Graders will have one more fundraiser so sell, sell, sell! Soon the 8 th graders will begin planning their 8 th Grade Celebration Party and our entire class will be helping them to make the night special. The Leadership Officers will be visiting elementary schools to help with the transition for them from elementary school to Shasta. Start getting ready, because we will be recruiting people for next years class and holding Officer Elections! If you are a person who likes to be involved in your school and help to make it a better place, Leadership is for you! So considering joining the 2012-2013 Class. 2

Yearbooks? Overdue Books, Fines and unpaid charges/fees. Just a reminder that all books must be returned and fines paid before students can receive their yearbook for Signing Day as stated on page 7 of the Thunderbird Daily Planner and in the Parent/ Student Handbook and Calendar. This applies to unpaid lunch charges, lost P.E. locks, and club fees as well. The school will withhold the student s yearbook on the day of the yearbook signing prompting students to pay fees owed. Yearbooks will be available to the student during the week directly following school dismissal. Immunization Reminder for next year s 7 th graders This is a friendly reminder that all 7 th graders are required to have a Tdap (Tetanus,Diphtheria and Pertussis) immunization for the 2012-2013 school year. Get your immunizations now and bring your updated information to us at the office. If needed, immunizations are available at our Bethel Student Health Center 541-607-1430 or Lane County Health Department 541-682-4041. It s Not too Late to Purchase a Yearbook Don t forget to purchase your yearbook, so that you have all the memories of the 2011-2012 school year. We will be having a yearbook signing on the last day of school, so you can have all your friends autograph your book. Please don t wait till the last day, though, as they may run out! You won t be disappointed! The theme is Metamorphosis! The book is hard-bound and it is in full color! 8 th Grade End of Year Events The 8 th Grade Field Trip is on Monday, June 11 th, 2012 at CAMP HARLOW! We will have many fun activities for the students to participate in and a BBQ lunch served by the 8 th grade parents. This will be a fun filled day for Shasta 8 th grade students! Shasta will hold its annual 8th Grade Departure Ceremony and Celebration on Wednesday, June 13, 2012. The evening is split into two activities. The Departure Ceremony will take place at Willamette High School in the Main Gym, beginning at 6:30 p.m. This event consists of recognition and awards, entertainment, a memory lane, and Certificates of Completion for each student. Families are invited and encouraged to attend. Immediately following the Departure Ceremony is the 8th Grade Celebration, a dance and activities event at Putter s. This is for 8th Grade Shasta students only. The evening s festivities will conclude promptly at 10:30 p.m. The Departure Ceremony is NOT a semiformal or formal affair, and all clothing must meet Shasta guidelines. Just like the 8th Grade Field Trip, certain disciplinary actions will prohibit students from attending the dance and activities event at Putter s. Details and guidelines for all three of these events were mailed home in April. Please go over the entire letter with your student now so everyone is aware of what is coming up and what the expectations are. We are still short of the goal to pay for the expenses of the 8th Grade Celebration. If you have a business, manage a business, work at a business, or know of business that might make a financial contribution, please let us know. Parents and relatives are greatly welcome to make a contribution, also. We do not want to charge for this event, as we want every 8th grader to attend. We will also need parents to help with several aspects of these events. Please contact Sue Embree at 688-9611, extension 3226, or sembree@bethel.k12.or.us or Anita Kolendar at anitacvpa@yahoo.com if you have a donation or intend on volunteering for the End of Year Events. 3

Spring Fashion Fever Hits Shasta Middle School Flowers are blooming, the sun is shining, and the temperatures are warming. Now is a good time to review the dress code expectations at Shasta. We ask that students wear appropriate clothing to school at all times. This means: No sunglasses No halter-tops or clothing that reveals a bare midriff, excessive cleavage, or allows under wear to be clearly seen No short shorts or short skirts. Length needs to be no shorter than finger-tip length when arms are at your side No inappropriate shirts: no profanity or nudity; depiction of alcohol, tobacco, or drug use or gang affiliation is allowed No ipod or Mp3 Players Cell phones need to be turned-off during school No bandanas, do-rags, hats, or hoods at any time Students who are deemed to be dressed inappropriately by Shasta staff, will be asked to change to appropriate clothing. This may mean a visit to the school counselor where the student may be provided PE t-shirt and/or shorts to wear or be given the opportunity to contact home for a change of clothing. Shasta Jazz Band, under the direction of Mike Reetz, took top honors at the Pleasant Hill Jazz Festival on April 21 st. They were one of two bands selected to play at the evening finals competition against Judson MS. Although Judson put up some good competition Shasta left with the first place trophy. Judges commented on their mature sound and excellent swing feel uncommon in the middle level. Kyler Wilcox wowed the crowd with an emotionally charged saxophone feature on Round Midnight while Bryce Schug hit a double G on trumpet; a high note most high school students dream of playing! This was during the band s finale song; Dizzy Gillespie s Manteca. The Shasta Jazz combo was awarded a third place trophy in the combo division. The band is eagerly awaiting their trip to the Bellevue Jazz Festival the first weekend of May. Music is on fire in Bethel! April was a busy month for Shasta Choirs. Because of the snow days, our March Concert was rescheduled and we had to have it in our gym. Despite poor acoustics, the sound was great and the students performed admirably. Advanced Choir was chosen to watch the world-famous violinist, Midori, at the high school on April 26th. All the choirs are busily preparing for end-of-the-year performances. IMPORTANT DATES * Thursday May 10th Best of the Northwest @ Univ. of Portland - Concert and Advanced Choirs * Fri/Sat May 18th and 19th - Mt Hood Jazz festival * Mon. May 28th Memorial Day Concert @ U of O - ALL CHOIRS * Thursday May 31st Choir Concert/Awards Ceremony * Session Auditions -June 5th-8th * Vocal Boot Camp Aug 13th -17th 9
