BRATTLEBORO POLICE DEPARTMENT POLICE OFFICER APPLICATION PROCESS Thank you for your interest in a position with the Brattleboro Police Department. We are currently accepting applications for the position of Police Officer. THE BENEFITS Benefits Package The Town of Brattleboro offers a comprehensive benefits package. As of FY 2008, base pay for a Police Officer, without any incentives, is $32,300.00; maximum pay is currently $50,644.00 (again, without incentives). If you are full time certified in Vermont, or have a full time certification from another state that is accepted by the Vermont Criminal Justice Training Council, you may qualify for higher entry pay. Required Duty Equipment The Brattleboro Police Department will provide you with all equipment required for duty. THE PROCESS Application The process to become a Brattleboro Police Officer begins with the filing of the application. Once that is received and accepted by the department, you will be notified of upcoming testing dates. State Mandated Testing Currently, the Vermont Criminal Justice Training Council administers the required written, physical, and psychological testing. These tests are given during a day long session at the Vermont Police Academy, and will cost you about $30.00. 2
A score of 75% or better must be achieved on the written exam to move to the physical assessment. The physical assessment is pass/fail, and must be passed to move to the psychological testing. Oral Interview After successful completion of the testing session at the police academy, you will be invited to meet with selected members of the department. You will have an oral interview, followed by a meeting with a background investigator who will request some preliminary information from you and give you a personal history questionnaire to fill out. Conditional Offer of Employment After positive review of the testing and interview, the Chief or his designee can extend a conditional offer of employment. This means that you can be hired as a police officer pending the successful completion of your background investigation. Background Investigation Once your completed personal history questionnaire is received by the department and reviewed by a background investigator, you will be contacted and your background investigation will begin. The length of time needed for a background investigation can range from several days to several weeks, depending on the depth of your background and the information uncovered. The investigator will keep you informed as the process unfolds. TRAINING Non-Certified (new to policing) and Part-Time Certified If you are not full-time certified by the Vermont Criminal Justice Training Council, you will be required to attend the Vermont Police Academy. This is a 16 week residential program run in Pittsford VT. For detailed information about the training curriculum, go to www.vcjtc.state.vt.us. After successful completion of the academy training, you will begin a 12 week field training program where you will be trained and evaluated by selected patrol officers. Full-Time Certified (Vermont) Lateral transfers from other Vermont agencies will be immediately placed in our 12 week field training program. Full-time certified officers from other states/jurisdictions will have their certifications evaluated by the VCJTC. If your certification is accepted, you will be placed in the field training program. If it is not, you will have to attend the police academy training described above. 3
