We are looking for families to host the members for those three nights. We ask that the member stay in the same home for all three nights to reduce the amount of moving around that they have to do. If you are interested in hosting a Team Member, contact Joe Roberts, Joyce Schmeeckle or Nicki Klein. Lincoln South Annual Golf Outing Mark your calendars for Friday May 7th for the annual golf outing to be held at the highlands golf course. There are many ways to participate. You can put together a team, provide pin prizes and door prizes or volunteer to help with the event. Or if you can t attend the golf in the afternoon, you can just come for the awards dinner after golf. This event will substitute for the regular meeting on that day. Contact Carl Zeutzius with any questions. See page 5 for the registration form. Club 14 100th Anniversary Club 14 will be celebrating 100 years on Friday June 4th at the Cornhusker Marriot with current Rotary International President John Kenny as the keynote speaker. This is quite an honor to have a sitting RI president in Nebraska so we need to have a good turnout. Tickets are $50 per person New Member Orientation Membership chair Bryan Block announced that a new member orientation has been scheduled for Friday May 14th at the Knolls, one hour before the regular meeting. More details to follow. Scholarship Selection May 14th has been designated for the annual Lincoln south scholarship awards. The selection committee will meet on Monday May 3rd at 1:00 pm at the office of Elise White at 1024 K. Also gifts are needed to present to the 4 finalists and their counselors. Items could include any desk or school supplies or other items new college students might enjoy. Elise White and Nikki Isemann will be collecting the gifts at each meeting leading up to the event. Art Venture Auction Event Lincoln South Rotary is promoting the Girl Scouts artventure project which mentors young artists who will be selling their art at an auction on May 1 at the Lied Center. PAGE 3 2009-2010 Club Goals 1. Club Strength Leave the club better than when I took office. 2. Club Growth Attain and maintain membership of 50. 3. Support Polio Eradication. 4. Support critical project in one of 3 areas; Health & Hunger, Water or Literacy. 5. Achieve 100% sustaining membership in the Rotary Foundation. 6. HAVE FUN! QUESTIONS? COMMENTS? ARTICLES? Contact Newsletter Editor Judy Krasomil 434-3909 Judy.krasomil@nifa.org PROGRAM Andrea Frazier, Court Monitoring Specialist for MADD Nebraska was our speaker. MADD was started in 1980 by 2 women whose families had been directly impacted by drunk drivers. The organization is now worldwide with 400 chapters with the focus shifting more toward education regarding the consequences of drinking & driving. In fact 3 of every 10 Nebraskans will be impacted by a Drunk driver. 2 of the 5 employees of MADD Nebraska have been impacted. 67 people died and 1,300 people were injured in Nebraska in 2008 as the result of an alcohol related crash. The group has 3 goals: 1. Stop drunk driving, 2. Help victims and 3. Prevent underage drinking. The campaign to stop drunk driving has 4 prongs: 1. High visibility law enforcement to serve as a deterrent 2. Ignition interlock installed on vehicles that requires the driver to do a breath test before the car will start. 3. Vehicle based technology which is incorporated into the design of the vehicle to perform such tests as measuring eye movements which change dramatically in people who are drinking. 4. Grass roots volunteers. Victim services focus on helping the victims versus helping the offenders which so many programs are designed to do. Victim services include going to court with the victims and setting up victim impact panels. Andrea is part of the court monitoring system where members of MADD attend court to document the proceedings and the outcomes in order to better understand the court system in Nebraska and how it treats Drunk Driving cases. Many students volunteer to do this which serves a dual purpose of collecting data for MADD and educating the students regarding the consequences of drunk driving. Nebraska has strong DUI laws and Lancaster County has a 95% conviction rate. 68% get probation and 29% go to jail. The average fine is $400. How can you help?
