TEXAS HIGHER EDUCATION COORDINATING BOARD Lora Weber Dominic Chavez External Relations (512) 427-6111 1200 East Anderson Lane P.O. Box 12788, Austin, Texas 78711-2788 www.thecb.state.tx.us HIGHER EDUCATION ENROLLMENTS ON TRACK FOR 2015 PARTICIPATION GOAL AUSTIN, October 25, 2007 College and university preliminary fall 2007 enrollments keep Texas on track for meeting overall participation goals of the state s higher education plan, Closing the Gaps by 2015. Enrollments increased this fall by 24,421 students, or 2.03 percent, to 1,225,817 students according to preliminary data* reported by colleges and universities to the. This would bring the total increase in enrollments to 241,072 since the higher education plan was adopted in October 2000 the equivalent of adding five more University of Texas at Austin campuses. In 2000, higher education enrollment stood at 984,745. These incremental gains lead us steadily to the ultimate goal of having 630,000 more students enrolled by the year 2015 than we had in the year 2000, said Commissioner of Higher Education Raymund Paredes. But we have to keep pushing. He noted that Closing the Gaps by 2015 (online at www.thecb.state.tx.us) calls for having 1.6 million students enrolled by 2015. Enrolling that many students will help the state develop the educated workforce it needs to compete with other states in attracting, retaining, and growing businesses and industries offering the best jobs in the future, according to the plan. Two characteristics of the fall 2007 increase are particularly important: 1) More than half of the 24,421 increase (14,655 or 60 percent) took place at public community colleges; and 2) more than half of the increase (12,812 or 52.5 percent) is due to enrollments by Hispanic students. We know that community colleges will play an increasingly vital role in helping the state meet its higher education goals and predict that as much as 70 percent of the state s higher education enrollment will be at community colleges by the year 2015, explained Commissioner Paredes. We also know that the demographics of our state indicate the Hispanic population in higher education will be much higher in 2015 than it is now. This fall s enrollments are a reflection of both trends. The largest percentage increases as reported by the institutions: Public universities: The University of Texas at Brownville (13.6 percent; 668 students) Public two-year institutions: Texarkana College (20.9 percent; 767 students) Independent universities: Concordia University of Austin (48.1 percent; 596 students) The largest numerical increases as reported by the institutions: Public universities: Texas A&M University (1,257 students) Public two-year institutions: Tarrant County College District (4,065 students) Independent universities: University of the Incarnate Word of San Antonio (619 students) * The fall 2007 enrollment data reflected here are based on a preliminary count of the 12th class day enrollment reported by higher education institutions. Historically, these preliminary figures are approximately 6 percent higher than the final, certified figures that are obtained later in the year. ###
