Upon graduation, I was hired at Bechtel Corporation in SF, as a welding technician. I Worked with others, on welding procedures, and orbital welding systems, for ASME application. Next, was Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, again developing and qualifying welding procedures this time for submarine haul application, also did a little work with welding titanium for a deep driving vehicle. I did qualify and held the classification as Welder, 3 years, working for SF Municipal Transportation Department. I was the sole welder helping to fabricate the famous Cable Car trucks. Most of my career is with PG&E s General Construction Gas department. I started as a welding engineer, working on welding procedure specification and qualification, and re-writing Company Welding Standards. Up till the early 1980s, there was no formal apprenticeship program for Welders, so with input from many journeymen welders, we wrote and implemented a training program. I served with journeymen welders as co-instructors for 13 years, at our learning center in San Ramon, training apprentice welders. Also did work as a Field Engineer for 3 years, and a Field Draftsmen for 3 years. Currently, I am an Apprentice Welder Training Coordinator, making a full circle back, not as an instructor, but overseeing all the training of our apprentices with the help of three other coordinators. We make field visits to all our apprentices every 6 weeks, and monitor their progress. And provide continuing education for our journeymen welders. We have also started a complete re-design of the original apprentice Welder training program, learning from our short coming in the past. Welding is a great career, it will allow you to meet and work with many different skilled people along the way, influencing your personal growth, as it did for me.
