SACRED HEART ACADEMY A Ministry of the Holy Name of Jesus Parish ACADEMICALLY ENRICHING PASSIONATELY CATHOLIC Vol. 16 May 4, 2016 Dear Parents and Friends, Thank you to all our wonderful parents who partner with us on the many activities we incorporate to educate the whole child! This past weekend dads and daughters enjoyed the Butterfly Ball, our traditional father-daughter dance. On Sunday, our small but mighty track team participated in the St. Catherine of Siena Track Meet and earned many medals, but more importantly had fun! None of these events would be possible without the collaboration and support from our parents. THANK YOU! Please join us tonight at 7:00 p.m., at the Olive site, as we lead Flores de Mayo, a traditional Filipino novena. Students who attend in school uniform will earn non-uniform on Thursday, May 5 th. This Friday, May 6, our 8 th graders lead us in our May Crowning Mass as we honor our Blessed Mother. Please join us for this beautiful liturgy that begins at 10:00 a.m. Please encourage your child to bring flowers for their class basket that is part of the procession. Happy Mother's Day to all of our moms, and those who serve in a mothering role! May our mother, Mary, continue to serve as the ultimate example for us, and may we all continue to say "YES" to God. Angela Williams Principal Sad News After diligently searching for teachers and wracking our collective brains we are sad to announce that there will be NO summer school available at Sacred Heart Academy this year. Scrip order form - Scrip will be sold Wednesday, Thursday & Friday mornings this week. 2016-17 Tuition We are looking forward to an exciting 2016-17 school year. K-8 Plan A tuition for 2016-17 will increase by $25 per month if paid over ten months and $20.84 for payments over twelve months. Five days per week preschool tuition will increase $20 per month if paid over ten months and $16.67 for payments over twelve months. There will be no increase in preschool tuition for 3 or 2 days per week. Upon completion of the school s preliminary budget the amount of Plan B tuitions will be available. Sacred Heart teacher salaries are currently at an average of 60% parity with those of Redlands Unified School District. To continue providing quality Catholic education for your children at Sacred Heart and retain our excellent teaching staff, we must align our teachers salaries with those of the public schools. These increases will begin moving us toward 70% parity. The Bishops tuition scholarship endowment funds have been allotted for next year. Those wishing to apply for school and parish tuition assistance may apply now on the FACTS Tuition Management Company s grant and aid website. There is a link on the school website. Tuition and Fee Agreements for 2016-17 will go out in the yellow envelopes next week. Final fundraising and parent hour totals will be calculated and sent home in the yellow envelopes on June 1 st. 2016-17 Registration, homeroom, and grade specific fees will be due on June 3 rd. Remember those Plan A families who have earned more than $425 in SCRIP PROFIT will have one half of the overage applied to their 2016-17 registration. Half of any profit earned by Plan B families will go toward their 2016-17 registration.

Faith Reflection: Merciful like the Father Pope Francis in his new exhortation Amoris Laetitia talks about how in our own day, dominated by stress and rapid technological advances, one of the most important tasks of families is to provide an education in hope. This does not mean preventing children from playing with electronic devices, but rather finding ways to help them develop their critical abilities and not to think that digital speed can apply to everything in life (275). As I said last week we will continue with our family theme, but from a different perspective today that will be to look at our SLE Families. I ve always enjoyed watching how these little families within our bigger school family become so important and special to our children. It s neat to see how the older kids take on the leadership roles and help the younger ones, and how much everyone looks forward to joining their family each month, how much they become mini families. The Pope s words above made me think of the Earth Day activity our SLE Families did a few weeks back. Not only were they stepping out of the digital world, going at a different speed, they were also putting their critical thinking skills to work as they created something useable out of all the trash they had been bringing to school. In case you hadn t been at school the morning Mrs. Tibbetts announced which families won for most creative design and read what they said their machines did I will do so again here. In family order, here, in their own words, is what they said about their creations: Family 8 created a castle-ship that flies around spreading God s Word. (How neat is that!) Family 13 created the De-Pollution Plane! This device flies through the air, sucking up harmful chemicals as it goes through its vacuum. Its boosters allow extra speed, and its tank converts pollution into beneficial particles which are released into the air to restore it to its natural beauty. Family 18 created the Teacher s Pet!!! The teacher s pet is used for many different things such as holding pens/pencils, papers, erasers, etc. It is a teacher s best friend. Teacher s will love this teacher s pet...i mean, it s called a teacher s pet for a reason! An education in hope, and love. Pope Francis would enjoy seeing our SLE Families. Thank you. Mrs. Alhadef THANK YOU! A big thank you to all of our volunteers and donors for the Butterfly Ball. The father-daughter dance is a beautiful tradition at SHA, but it would not be possible without all the generous support. Thank you for your treasures, talents, and time! (Please be sure to put down your time and/or donations on your orange volunteer sheet and turn it in to the office.) Scrip Reminder! Families on tuition Plan A keep in mind, the deadline for buying scrip to meet your fundraising obligation for the current school year is Thursday, May 26 th - which is approaching fast! Remember - depending on the availability of volunteers, scrip WILL be sold during the summer and all purchases made after June 1 st will count toward your 2016-17 school year fundraising obligation.

April Showers Bring May Flowers to honor our Blessed Mother, Mary We begin the month of May with two beautiful tributes to our Blessed Mother, Mary. We will celebrate our annual May Crowning Mass on Friday, May 6, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. This beautiful tradition, hosted by our 8 th grade class, includes the presentation of Marian Awards to the two 7 th grade students who best exhibit the qualities of our Blessed Mother. On May 4, we will join our Parish for the annual Flores de Mayo beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Olive site. We will pray the Rosary and offer flowers to our Blessed Mother, Mary in this bilingual devotional service. Students who attend will have non-uniform on Thursday, May 5 th. We will appreciate donations of flowers (roses or any kind of flower) to one or both of these special events. Flowers may be dropped off at your child s classroom. Thank you for your generosity! Special Note: Filipino Ministry member, Evelyn Alms also invites SHA students and their families to the closing of the novena on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at 4:30 p.m. at the Olive site.

New Immunization Law With the passing of SB 277, no new personal beliefs exemption (PBE) forms may be filed effective January 1, 2016 for students attending a public or private school in California. Most families will not be affected by the new law because their children have received all required vaccinations. PBEs filed before January 1, 2016 are no longer valid when the student enters 7 th grade. A parents guide to immunizations is also available at http://eziz.org/assets/docs/imm- 222School.pdf or http://eziz.org/assets/docs/imm-222s_school.pdf (Spanish). Additional resources for schools and parents are available on the Shots for School website at http:// www.shotsforschool.org/. 6 th GRADE PARENTS: Please remember the California state immunization requirement that all students entering 7 th grade need to show proof of a Tdap (Pertussis/Whooping Cough) booster shot before entering the classroom. We highly recommend that you take care of this before the end of this school year. Some students may have already received the shot and need only turn in the updated documentation to the office.... ~... ~... ~... ~... ~... As of today our records show that only 8 of our 30 6 th grade families have turned in proof of Tdap immunization to the office. PLEASE take care of this very important requirement for 7 th grade attendance.
