Weekly Newsletter For the Week of November 4 November 10, 2018 Dear Parents, As you know, we will be hosting our annual Open House this afternoon from 12:00-2:00pm. Open House is a wonderful opportunity for us to share the Bishop Diego experience with the greater community. Please help us spread the word about Bishop by inviting everyone you know to Open House! This includes prospective families, but also alumni, grandparents, parents of alumni, and members of the local community who may not know Bishop! #DiscoverBishopDiego Current parents, we encourage you to come and share your experiences with prospective parents. This is also a great way for you to earn family service hours. As current parents, you are our most powerful marketing tool and we are grateful when you spread the word about Bishop Diego to fellow parents! Please consider bringing friends or family with kids in grades 3-8 to come visit us at Open House! When they complete an Online Inquiry at www.bishopdiego.org to RSVP, they can indicate that you referred them and you will be entered to win a $100 gift card to the location of your choice! As Bishop grows, so do the opportunities we are able to offer our students. On Tuesday, we are excited to debut our Freshman for a Day experience! Bishop Diego has taken the shadow day experience to a whole new level! This unique event is an opportunity for all 8 th grade students to experience everything that Bishop Diego has to offer. Our guests will visit classes, enjoy a spirit rally, learn about activities, athletics, and spiritual life, have a fantastic catered lunch, and meet new friends. Important Fall Admissions and Advancement Dates: Freshman for a Day Tuesday, November 6 Middle School Wrap Party/Project Santa Thursday, December 13 Warmly, Cristy McNay, Ed.D Director of Admissions and Advancement (805) 967-1266, ext. 118 cmcnay@bishopdiego.org Curriculum & Instruction Mr. Tim Flanagan Here is a sample of what's going on in classrooms this week: Human Geography students are going on a field trip to visit See International, an organization dedicated to restoring vision for people around the world. These students organized a bake sale and raised $308 for See, which was then matched by their Board of Directors. This money has the equivalent impact of restoring sight for 12 people! Students in Spanish III are writing fairy tales, and making audio recordings of their stories using an app called Flipgrid. Pigs will literally fly in Mr. Bennett's classroom this week! AP Physics classes will observe and record data related to these flying pigs in a lab designed to help students understand centripetal motion. AP Biology students are doing an inquiry-based lab to observe water movement in cells, while Biology classes are finishing a case study on the cyanide poisoning of Tylenol in the 1980's to help them understand the concept of cellular respiration. World Literature and AP English Literature classes will begin their studies of Cyrano de Bergerac and Tess of the d'urbervilles, respectively. Counseling Services Mrs. Rya Carpenter College Visiting Bishop: University of La Verne Tuesday, November 13 12:53pm at lunch College Center College Visit To California State University Channel Islands: Cal-SOAP is hosting a free visit with lunch at CSU Channel Islands on November 13. Transportation provided, with Mrs. Carpenter serving as chaperone. If interested in this field trip opportunity, request a permission slip from Ms. Gonzalez. Parents of 9 th Graders: Please join us on Wednesday, November 14th at 6:00pm in the Library for an informative evening covering the following topics: Graduation and college entrance requirements Bishop s 4 Year Academic Plan Christian Service Hours Requirement & Opportunities Advanced Placement (AP) program & courses Parents of 9th, 10th and 11th graders: Mrs. Carpenter will lead a discussion about the Highly Selective College admission process. You are invited to join this meeting from 7:05pm-7:35pm on Wednesday, November 14 in the College and Career Center. Parents of 10 th and 11 th graders: Mrs. Carpenter will lead a discussion about NCAA and NAIA the recruiting and college application process for high school athletes. Join us at 6:00pm in the College and Career Center on Wednesday, November 14.

Seniors & College Applications: If your student has a LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION deadline of: December 1, the last day to request a letter of rec is November 16. December 15, the last day to request a letter of rec is December 3. January 1, the last day to request a letter of rec is December 3. January 15, the last day to request a letter of rec is January 1. Scholarships: The Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara presented to seniors in class last month. While the main application deadline is January 15, the early deadline for the Honors & Art Scholarships is November 15. For more information visit:www.sbscholarship.org. Very important note: The main application requires completion of the FAFSA and a letter of recommendation. Those things need to be handled before you are able to hit the submit button on January 15. So, be sure and get ahead of those requirements. The Urban Plunge trip is quickly approaching and filling up very fast. Many students took the information home but keep in mind that the first to turn in forms and money will have priority.
