By direction of the President, under the provisions of the Act of Congress approved 25 July 1963, the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in action is awarded to: SPECIALIST FIVE CLAUDE QUICK, JR., Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 27th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam, on 19 May 1966, while serving as a medical aidman attached to a rifle company on a search and destroy mission when elements of the company encountered intense Viet Cong fire from automatic weapons concealed in the thick jungle foliage. As injured Americans fell, he immediately moved through the withering enemy fire to give aid. Approaching one injured man, he observed that his injury was of a nature that the man could not be moved. Completely disregarding his own personal safety, he remained by the man s side, trying vainly to revive him. Specialist Quick, although wounded himself turned his attentions elsewhere, moving to other injured Soldiers, giving aid and encouragement, and directing the evacuation of the wounded. Specialist Quick is credited with saving several lives during this action. This outstanding display of aggressiveness, devotion to duty, and personal bravery at risk to his own life is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army. B A I L, 6 6 t h B o m b a r d m e n t S q u a d r o n, 4 4 t h Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force, European Theater of Operations, on 5 June 1944, while serving as the Group mission s Lead Radar Navigator on a heavy bombardment attack against defended enemy coastal positions in the vicinity of Boulogno Sur Mer, France, in preparation of the invasion on 6 June 1944. As he approached the target, Lieutenant Bail s aircraft was hit repeatedly and severely by enemy antiaircraft fire which seriously crippled the ship, knocking out three engines and causing the remaining engine to be cut off, killed the pilot, and wounded several members of the crew, including the Command Pilot whose foot was severed. The co pilot set a course for England while the aircraft rapidly lost altitude. While over the English Channel, Lieutenant Bail applied a tourniquet to the leg of the Command Pilot and the crew was ordered to bail out. He remained with the Command Pilot, who had sufficiently recovered from shock to reach the aircraft s steering yoke, and turn it around from its inland course and head it back to ditch in the English Channel. This extraordinary act of heroism enabled the Command Pilot to 1
steer the aircraft away from an English village preventing further loss of life. Lieutenant Bail s valiant and unselfish efforts, above and beyond the call of duty and at great risk to himself, reflect great credit upon himself, the Air Corps, and the United States Army. He set the highest example of personal bravery through his demonstrated valor and calmness under fire. Staff Sergeant Briggs s valiant actions prevented enemy insurgent forces from overrunning the United States Force s position and were directly responsible for prevention of additional United States military casualties or Prisoners of War by the enemy. His actions under fire as a combat medic were performed with marked distinction and bravery. Staff Sergeant Briggs s distinctive accomplishments are in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, this command, and the United States Army. His squad killed several insurgents, captured large quantities of weapons and ammunition, and saved the lives of numerous convoy members. Staff Sergeant Nein s bravery is in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 503d Military Police Battalion (Airborne), the 18th Military Police Brigade, and the United States Army. PRIVATE STEPHEN C. SANFORD, United States Army, on 19 November 2005, during combat operations against an armed enemy of the United States, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Private Sanford displayed extraordinary courage during the evacuation of casualties from a home in Mosul, Iraq, while under intense enemy fire. Although shot in the leg during his squad s initial assault attempt, he accompanied his squad during their second assault. Once inside the house, he provided a heavy volume of suppressive fire while the casualties were evacuated. He continued to engage the enemy while escorting the wounded Soldiers from the house. He returned to the house a second time to provide vital covering fire and security for the final withdraw of the casualties. When the last Soldier leaving the house was shot in the neck, Private Sanford, with complete disregard for his own safety, moved to the Soldier and began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation. While attempting to revive the other Soldier, he was shot twice more in the back. Protecting the fallen Soldier, Private Sanford returned fire and killed an insurgent while receiving two more potentially fatal gunshot wounds. The 528th Fighter Squadron, commonly referred to as the Dragonflies, was a part of the North Burma Offensive, spearheaded by the 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional), also known as Merrill s Marauders.
