Activity attendance recording on CadetOne 16. All staff are reminded of the need to record attendances in CadetOne at the completion of activities to ensure that legal requirements are met and also to ensure that cadets and staff receive recognition for their service. This requirement extends to all AAFC activities including weekly parades, SQN activities and activities conducted by 3WG, 301FLT and 320FLT. To assist in the management of large Wing activities, (such as Ashfield and Sydney City ANZAC parades) individual SQNs may be tasked with providing a marked nominal roll to a HQ co-ordinator who will then be responsible for updating CadetOne. (Action Item 9 2015 3WG Management Conference) Social Media Training 17. SQN COs are reminded of the requirement to report on the completion of Social Media Training for cadets. CadetOne currently has no functionality to record completion of Social Media Training. This situation is unlikely to change in the immediate future. 18. Until CadetOne has the functionality to record Social Media Training as a standalone subject, I direct that Social Media Training be conducted at a point in time, as close as is practical to the Behaviour Training Policy. Once both Behavioural Training and Social Media Training have been completed, the member s record can be updated indicating they have completed the Behavioural Training. Such an indication will show that they have also completed Social Media Training. (Action Item 12 2015 3WG Management Conference) Sharing of SQN Training Resources 19. In furtherance of a commitment given by all COs at the 3WG Management Conference, SOGT 3WG is co-ordinating a task to collate quality SQN resources and have them placed on a web based solution for sharing of all SQNs in 3WG by the second half 2015. 20. To assist in this regard, all COs are asked to canvass their staff and cadet NCOs to provide a collection of SQN training resources to their Regional XOs. The material required in this first phase is just for current relevant lesson plans, PowerPoint presentations, training notes for Recruit Stage only, that you feel will be valuable in the training of cadets at your SQN. In compliance with the timeframe set at the conference, COs are asked to provide material to XOs (preferably in electronic form) nlt 4 May 15. Nil submissions will not be accepted..all SQNs are actively training cadets and must have some material that can be provided to the process. SOGT will collate the resources and have the first of them available for sharing nlt 7 Jun 15. (Action Item 24 2015 3WG Management Conference). The second phase will require you to submit the same requirements for your first round subjects that were taught in semester one by no later than 27 Jul 15. Expressions of Interest 3 Wing Safety Cell 21. 3WG HQ will establishe a Safety Cell to accommodate the growing compliance with safety issues within the WG. The safety cell will comprise of three (3) members who will attend 3WGHQ once a month or as required. The team will be headed by Wing Commander Frank Galea who will be responsible to the OC in relation to all Wing safety matters. The Safety Cell will consist of three safety persons with an idea of ensuring a high level of service, support and redundancy to 3WG Squadrons. 3WG RI 02/15 Page 4 of 5

22. The safety network will also consist of a USC for each region who will operate with their retrospective XO s to support their region.. This will give the WGWSA onee POC for that region and ensure an effective safety network throughout the Wing. 23. EOI s are called for the HQ Safety Cell positions and thee regional USC positions. EOI s should be addressedd to WGCDR Galea marked Sensitive: Personal and submitted electronically to frank.galea@aafc.org.au. Those who aree safety trained are encouraged to apply. PAUL M. HUGHES Wing Commander (AAFC) Officer Commanding 15 Mar 15 Enclosure 1. Historical Reflections 2/15 - Wing Commander Nigel Borland Love 3WG RI 02/15 Page 5 of 5

Wing Commander Nigel Borland Love Most cadets in 3 Wing would have been to Sydney (Kingsford Smith) International Airport. Very few however, would be aware of the significance between the founder of Sydney Airport and the establishment of the Air Training Corps in NSW. In 1915, Nigel Borland Love enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force. Instead of embarking for Gallipoli, Love was selected to attend the NSW Government s flying school at Ham Common which is now RAAF Base Richmond. Nigel Love completed his pilot training and was commissioned as a Lieutenant (pilot) and served with 3 Squadron Australian Flying Corps. Lt Love was sent to Ypres, Belgium in December 1917. Shortly after arriving, over 1 million German troops moved to the battlefields of the Somme after their withdrawal from the Russian Front. More importantly from a new young pilot s perspective, Baron Von Richthofen; the Red Baron and his flying circus controlled the skies around the battlefields. Lt Nigel Love with RE8. Left: RE8 Propellor marking gravestone of the Red Baron Aviation was in its infancy at this time. Planes were flimsy machines made of wood, canvas and wire. The role that aircraft could and would play in future conflicts was not even contemplated and the life expectancy for any pilot was not high. Lt Love was tasked with reconnaissance, particularly to assist the artillery corps with accurate real time information on their fall of shot. The work was dangerous and required long periods of flying over the battlefields making observations of troop movements and where bombs fell. On the 21st April 1918 the Red Baron was shot down over Australian lines, most likely by Australian Anti Aircraft gunners. The officers of 3SQN including Lt Love gave the Red Baron a full military funeral at Bertangles Cemetery. On the 4th July 1918 Lt Love took part in the battle of Le Hamel. Le Hamel was a landmark battle for Australia, the first under Australian Command, that of Lieutenant General Sir John Monash. It was probably the first integrated use of aircraft in a battle. Lt Love was repatriated to England after contracting pneumonia shortly after Le Hamel. By this time he had flown over 200 hours over the lines. The average survival time for a pilot was 60 hours.

At the end of the war Nigel Love negotiated a contract to be the sole agent in Australia for A V Roe and Co (later known as Avro). Nigel Love returned to Australia in July 1919 where he established the Australian Aircraft and Engineering Company (AA&E Co) in Botany. In this grand age of aviation pioneers, Nigel Love set himself up to be at the forefront of aviation in Sydney. Nigel Love searched for an area for an aerodrome. He eventually found a bullock paddock that was relatively flat, covered in buffalo grass and surrounded by open ground on each side without obstacles. The land Nigel Love selected is now the site of Sydney International Airport. Replica of Red Baron s Fokker Dr1 Southern Cross in Sydney WGCDR Love with ATC cadets Nigel Love made the first flight out of the new Mascot aerodrome in November 1919. His company AA & E Co built the first aircraft in Australia made from local materials including local timbers. They sold 6 Avro 504Ks to the RAAF and developed the first 5 passenger bi plane in the world designated as a B 6. The next big sale was an Avro 504K, the first aircraft purchased by the fledgling airline QANTAS. Sir Hudson Fysh, one of the founders of QANTAS was a 3SQN friend of Nigel Love. Nigel Love also conducted the first ever commercial flight between Sydney and Melbourne. Mascot aerodrome captured Sydney s fascination with all things flying and was packed on weekends where Sydneysiders would come to watch the aerial displays. Finally, Nigel Love was instrumental in getting Sir Charles Kingsford Smith to land the Southern Cross at Mascot aerodrome in Sydney instead of Melbourne following the first trans Pacific flight. In 1923 Nigel Love diverted his interests to the family flour mill industry, operating a mill on Enfield Road, Enfield. With the outbreak of WWII Nigel Love again answered the call of duty. Too old for active service, he was promoted to Wing Commander and was appointed as the very first Commanding Officer of No 2 Wing Air Training Corps (NSW). Wg. Cdr. Love served the fledgling Air Training Corps through until the end of WWII, responsible for providing essential training for air crew desperately required for the war in Europe. The name WGCDR N B Love takes pride of place on the Honour board as the very first Commanding Officer (now Officer Commanding 3 Wing) from 2nd August 1941 to 30th September 1945. You should also think about WGCDR Nigel Love whenever you drive into the Blue Emu long term carpark at Sydney airport because that is on Nigel Love Crescent. Number 2/15 in the series
