IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION AND OUTREACH WARREN COUNTY NEWSLETTER Cortney Garrington Executive Director cortneyg@iastate.edu Kathryn Pierson Office Manager kpierson@iastate.edu March 2017 Women in Ag: Agronomy in the Field Class Agronomy in the Field is a multi-session workshop for women designed to provide opportunities to learn more about crop production practices, conservation practices and water quality impacts to help strengthen decision-making on the farm and to increase the comfort level when talking to landowners, tenants, ag retailers, and farming partners. This series is designed to be hands-on and conducted in the field to see real-time conditions. The topic of the night is Greenhouse Education 101. Come find out exactly how greenhouses are run, what techniques they use, and get your questions answered from our greenhouse operators in Warren County. A light supper will be provided, all you need to do is bring yourself and a friend! After the meeting, attendees will be invited to participate in an activity for a small fee. ISU McNay Research Farm near Chariton, Iowa. There is no cost to attend and each monthly session will be up to 2 hours. You do not need to commit for the entire season to attend. Start to Farm The Start to Farm: New Farmer Learning Network, organized by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, is a statewide program designed to provide education and support for beginning and early-career agricultural producers. Start to Farm groups meet several times throughout the year. Based on priorities and topics determined by each group they will discuss production techniques, ways to grow and improve business practices, and farm management strategies. There is no area of Ag that is off limits. This group is open to all producers of any size or type of operation! Palmer Amaranth Workshop Workshop includes: Update on Palmer amaranth infestations in Iowa, Key identification traits to differentiate Palmer amaranth from other amaranths in Iowa, Information on management in crop and non-crops areas. 2.0 CEUs will be offered for Certified Crop Advisors. The event will be held on Tuesday, March 28th from 1:30 3:30pm at Pin Oak Marsh Lodge in Lucas County. WARREN COUNTY EXTENSION AND OUTREACH Greetings! 4-H HORIZON My name is Jennifer Miler and I am your new County Youth Coordinator. I join you from Clarke County Extension where I have spent the last six years as the County Youth and Outreach Coordinator. My husband Tony and I recently celebrated the birth of our first child, Blair Addilynn. She is sure to become your biggest 4-H fan! Tony farms full time on our cow-calf operation. I enjoy spending time with our newest bundle of joy, hunting, running, and farming. I am officially in the office each day and have e-mail set up. Food Safety Quality Assurance (FSQA) ALL 4-H ers who are exhibiting animals (except dog and horse) are REQUIRED to complete FSQA testing/training. There are only 2 trainings/testing dates offered in Warren County, so please mark your calendar to attend one! 4th, 5th, and 6th graders will need to be available the entire time for the training/ workshop. 4-H ers that are 7th 12th grade will also use this time to test out, which will be good for one year. If you are unsure if you need FSQA or have any questions please contact your leader or the Extension office. We have a few ideas for you! Option 1: We are looking for some help getting the monthly newsletter out. Your club or a few individuals from your club could come to the Extension office after school once a month to help. Option 2: The Warren County Farm Tour is looking for 4-H Clubs to get involved! Some ideas they have are: teaching people how to recycle or reuse products, teach people how to plant seeds or start plants, information about how to care for animals, recruitment for 4-H and many others! Option 3: The Iowa State Fair Agricultural Coordinator is looking for volunteers to help with Little Hands on the Farm at the Iowa State Fair. This is a great team building activity for your entire club. Each day is divided into three, four- hour shifts and volunteers would receive one admission ticket, one vehicle pass, and a volunteer t-shirt. UPCOMING 4-H WORKSHOPS AND CAMPS Poultry Workshop and production poultry, how to prepare for the show, and how to care for the poultry, and Showmanship. You will learn how to enter your birds in the appropriate categories. We have added a NEW Breeding Class for Standard Fowl this year. We will also review the opportunities you will have to bring your Standard Breeding Fowl in for exhibition and competition. The 4-H/FFA Show is judged based on a comparison method demonstrating uniform growth, appropriate breed selection, and appearance. We will talk about when to select market Taste of Camp Junior Lock - In Warren County Senior 4-H is hosting the Junior Lock-in on March 10th at the Southeast Warren High School from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. To RSVP for this event please email Kathryn at kpierson@iastate.edu or call 515-961-6237. Sheep/Goat Weigh-In: April 22nd 4-H Market Lamb and Meat Goat Weigh-In will take place on Saturday, April 22nd from 7 am 10 am at the Warren County Fairgrounds. ALL youth who wish to exhibit market sheep and meat goats at the Warren County Fair, Iowa State Fair, and/or Ak-Sar-Ben must attend. This clinic will help you learn your responsibilities as a babysitter, what parents expect of you, how to care for an infant and young children, age appropriate activities and much more. Indianola March 7, 8 and 9 3:45 5:45 p.m. Or Norwalk March 13 and 14 9 a.m. to noon 4-H ers usually work with a veterinarian to use the medication appropriate to treat sickness in their animals. This will not change. However, beginning Jan. 1, 2017, you will need to have a written document, called a Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD), from their veterinarian before you are legally allowed to feed many of the medicated feeds including medicated milk replacer. Most medications that livestock producers use in water will become prescription only after Jan. 1, 2017. 2017 Share-A-Kid Contest Each year, the Iowa Dairy Goat Association promotes interest in dairy goats in our state. One of the ways they do so is through the Share-A-Kid program. Winning applicants are selected from the essays they send in. This statewide contest is open to those between the ages of 10 and 17 years of age, and who are a member of IDGA, Looking for College Scholarships? There are many scholarships available to High School Juniors and Seniors. The Herbert Hoover Uncommon Student Award is available to 15 Iowa High School Juniors. They receive a $1,000 cash award and 3 students could earn an additional $5,000 4-H, FFA, or other agricultural groups. They only award one goat per family per year; however, siblings are encouraged to apply. Please read all rules and regulations. Information/rules are with the entry form that must accompany the essay. Be sure to complete the form with all required signatures. scholarship. The next application deadline is March 15, 2017. Youth Conference Each year almost 1000 teenagers cover the campus at Iowa State University for 3 days full of speakers, workshops, mixers, dances, a banquet and community service. This event is open to those who have completed 8th grade. You don t even have to be in 4-H to attend, so be sure to invite a friend! LEADER INFORMATION Save the Date: Launching Leaders Annual Leader Training Our annual Launching Leader Ideas sharing session will be offered on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 from 5:15-8 pm in the Urbandale Extension Office. This free event includes dinner, opportunities for leaders to share ideas with other leaders, and a keynote speaker. Registration is available at: http://tinyurl.com/4hleaders During this training, 4-H leaders will gain an understanding of the importance of youth involvement and identify strategies that support positive youth-adult partnerships through positive youth development. Be on the lookout for an e-mail coming from Jennifer with specifics to be completed prior to the training. The required annual training is scheduled for Monday, April 3rd from 6:30-8:30 pm at the Warren County Extension Office. Supper will be provided and will be served beginning at 6 pm. Culinary Challenge On Saturday, April 22nd, Warren County 4-H will be hosting an exciting event to teach 4-Hers about food and also a cooking competition! The Culinary Challenge event will consist of 4-Hers as an individual or a team with up to three 4-Hers. Teams will be divided by Junior, Intermediate and Senior age levels. If you have different age levels on the team you will be in the oldest member's age category. The event will be at Carlisle High School from 8:30 am till 2:30 pm but teams will only be there for 1.5 hours depending on when their age group is scheduled. Each team will bring an appetizer to prepare on site within a 1/2 hour time frame. Judging will follow with a learning time. You will be given 15 minutes to prep your station, start an oven, etc. at the beginning. Each team will need to provide their own supplies to make the appetizer and submit the recipe prior to the event. Pans, cooking utensil, etc. will be provided. Please sign up by Friday, March 31st by calling the Extension Office at 515-961-6327. Sign up now because space is limited to 5 teams per age level. This event is being hosted by the Intermediate 4-H Leadership Team.
