While there were few children present we all had a great time. Even President Nancy got out of the kitchen for a few minutes to greet Santa. Having a child in your party meant head of the line privileges when dinner was served. Thank you to everyone who contributed to a wonderful dinner. Normally they play Casnasta at their monthly meetings. President Nancy Evers hosted the past presidents and their friends on Monday, December 9th for their annual Christmas gathering. Those present included (front row left to right): Marie Canale, Judy Chavez and David Richey. Seated: Dorothy Burguss, Art Frey and Evelyn Scherrer. Standing (left to right): Betty Stubbs, Bettie Crandall, Linda Farley, Nancy Evers, Thelma Frey, and Jackie Richey. The group supports the Unit Nursing Scholarship. Page 2 January 2014 From the Top Tom Grimes, Commander Another calendar year has come to an end. We are truly a pacesetter American Legion Family. Our membership is rapidly reaching 100% across the board. As of today the Post needs 53 renewals to reach 100%, the Unit needs 43 and the Squadron is down 8. Great job everyone. Our Honors Team and the American Legion Riders continue to do a great job in representing our American Legion Family. Both are being called upon weekly. In November we created a new tradition and will be doing two ceremonies on Veterans Day, with one on the Windsor Town Green and one in the Plaza here in Healdsburg. We met with the Healdsburg City Manager and her staff and asked that fee s for the ceremony on the Plaza be waived. There is an ad-hoc city committee looking at the fee structure. The city is in the process of reviewing the two bids for management of the Villa Chanticleer complex. Hopefully a decision will be made soon so that we can get on with the business of the Legion. Auxiliary Happenings Nancy Evers, President Thank you to everyone who helped make our American Legion Family Christmas Party a success. A special thanks to those who cooked the turkey s and to Warren Luke who did the carving and Ron Collier who helped in the kitchen. We had a wonderful spread of side dishes and desserts. Thank you to everyone who brought their favorite dishes. Eddy and Santa NOTICE FROM THE BAR COMMITTEE DUE TO THE LOW BAR INCOME IT HAS BE- COME NECESSARY ELIMINATE THE FREE DRINKS. January 2014 Page 5 Sotoyome Son s Update Matt Foreman, Squadron Commander Cassius and Santa Note from the Adjutant: We are very close to our 2014 membership goal of 61 members. It s not too late if you have not renewed. More importantly, we need adults to step forward and take a leadership role within the Squadron. I realize that many of you are involved in leadership roles in the Post and the American Legion Riders. The SAL is a great way to get your feet wet if you are not currently serving in a leadership role. Your junior members need you! The Sotoyome Newsletter The Official Monthly Publication of the Sotoyome Post 111 and the Sotoyome American Legion Family Tom Grimes: Publisher/Editor Coachtom.grimes@gmail.com Phone 481-9169 Bob Taylor: Circulation chiefhfd@aol.com 2011 All Rights Reserved POT LUCK AND GAMES at the Villa Annex! Friday, January 24, 2014 Dinner at 6:00 pm, followed by Bingo. Bring your favorite potluck dish, a salad or dessert. Guests are welcome! 25 cents per card per game. Bring Quarters! Sotoyome Chapter 111, ALR Mitch Laing, President American Legion Riders met Tuesday Dec 10 at Marys Pizza in Windsor. We had an excellent turnout of 16 riders. Reports were given on Missions and Events that Riders participated in and will be participating in. This is Showing The Colors where we are visible in our Vests. RKA Food Ride to Sonoma Raceway, USMC Toys for Tots rides, Funeral Honors for Veterans, Welcome Homes for Active Duty Service Members, Dinners and Events for groups like Sonoma MOMS, Legion, Service Organizations and others. Legion Riders had a major presence at the annual Wreaths Across America Events in Cloverdale and Sonoma. California Legion Riders requires specific officer positions be filled so I asked for volunteers to assume Vice President and Ron "Campy" Dillow stepped up and was unanimously voted in. Post #111 Commander Ed Howell stepped up as ALR Chaplain. All ALR Officer positions are now filled. Ron Collier updated the group on MIAP for local veterans as well as new duties he will be assuming for Regional portion of State of California for MIAP. Thanks to efforts by treasurer Steve Bowne all 24 members are renewed and paid. Steve is also instrumental in our updated Web Site, which continues to evolve. http:// www.healdsburglegionriders.org/ While the late Fall us upon us and Winter is looming, California Weather allows us to still ride for missions and events, so American Legion Riders will be ever present in our community. Even when we are relegated to Cages (aka cars) we will continue to Show our Colors and be ever ready to honor our veterans and active military service members. On the personal side, for my part in assisting Ron with MIAP, for the communications sent out concerning our vets and service members, for coordinating the escort of The Traveling Vietnam Wall from Elks Lodge to the Park, and for volunteering in serving 200 Vets from Yountville and escorting Gold Star Mom Linda Kynoch for an award at that Vets dinner, I was awarded Elk of the Month by Petaluma Elks ER Cylde Schultz. American Legion Riders is open to any member of the Legion Family who rides a motorcycle 350cc or larger or is a spouse. We meet at 6pm the Tuesday prior to Sotoyome Post #111 Legion, next meeting is Tuesday Jan 7 followed by Tuesday Feb 11, at Marys Pizza Shack in Windsor.
