Manor Gazette Inside July s issue Welcome the Manager Staff profile History A Fact Events and activities Jokes Chaplin: The Charlie Chaplin Story At The Brewhouse Theatre & Arts Centre (01823 283244) A heart-warming and powerful musical tale 19 Jul 2016 Hello and Welcome! A very warm welcome to everyone! This is our first newsletter for The Manor and I hope that in time it will be filled with more stories and information about our home and the wonderful activities/events that we have to offer here at The Manor. I am so pleased and proud to be the new general manager for the home and look forward to meeting you all if I have not done so already. Please do come and introduce yourselves and have a coffee with me. My door is always open. So you know me a little bit better: I am a qualified nurse with 9 years care and nursing experience in care of the elderly and YPD. I have worked in my last home for well over 5 years and moved to be the manager of The Manor due to the brilliant facilities and care it has to offer. I have a two year old son called Thomas who keeps me on my toes and I have written my own short stories and poetry. I am currently working on a thriller novel which I would love to get published in the future. If I do have spare time I like to go geocaching and hiking. General Manager Rebecca Archer The Manor Care Home July 2016 Haydon Close Bishops Hull, Taunton

News in and around The Manor History A Fact! 5 July 1946: The bikini is showcased for the first time Showgirl Micheline Bernardini modeled the first bikini, designed by Frenchman Louis Réard, at the Piscine Molitor in Paris. The new item of swimwear was named the bikini after the atomic test off of the Bikini Atoll by the US earlier that week. Summer Jokes What did the pig say on a hot summer day? I m bacon! Why do bananas use sunscreen? Because they peel. Why are gulls named seagulls? If they were by the bay, they d be bagels. Employee of the month A big congratulations to Taz and Pete; our two maintenance men who have shown enthusiasm, hard work and dedication in their job. Both Taz and Pete have worked hard on completing the Mini WOW upstairs and have done an excellent job. Bishops Hull Taunton Taunton was the first town in the country to be lit permanently by electric street lighting in 1881

Your Care Rating Thank you to everyone who completed the Your Care Rating Survey last year. Your feedback is important to us and allows us to know what we are doing well and where improvements need to be made. Following the feedback received last year, some of the actions we have taken include: Residents now have two tablets to use. One is in Hestercombe and the other Vivary unit. Please make good use of them Feedback regarding activities means that there is more entertainment and day trips for your pleasure The WOW project downstairs is now complete with a whole new reception and lounge, dining areas for your comfort You will have another chance to give formal feedback in this year s survey when that is launched later in the year. However, you don t have to wait until then as we always want to hear what we re doing well and what we could do better!

Stories to share Taz - Maintenance Hello I am Taz and I am one of the homes maintenance men. I have worked at The Manor for several years now. You will usually see me in the corridor with a paint brush in one hand a cuppa in the other. If you need anything fixing or sorting out in your room give me or Pete a shout and we will be happy to help, also if you ever fancy just sitting with us for a coffee and a donut and having a chat we are more than happy to do so. Activities The Activity staff have planned a full packed month for us in July. From musical bingo, film clubs, flexercise, songs of praise, giant jenga, music for health, entertainers, baking, quizzes and much, much more. We also have a minibus for your pleasure. If you fancy a cream tea at the local garden centre or fancy doing a shop around the supermarket or town then please liaise with either Sue, Marc or Lisa. The activity staff has been given a fantastic opportunity on the 19 th July to attend a Unique pilot workshop so Jayne our activity therapist will be entertaining you with Music for health starting at 11. Morning Worship Please join us on the 07/07/2016, 14/07/2016, 21/07/2016, and 28/07/2016 in the lounge at 11:30 Wimbledon We will be showing the ladies and men s finals on the 09/07/2016 and the 10/07/2016 followed by a cream tea and more entertainment throughout the day

A few words from Barchester Recognising those who care In May, we celebrated International Nurses Day. It was a chance to thank the amazing nurses in our homes and hospitals who work so hard to provide quality care and to improve people s daily lives. We sent out travel mugs as a thank you and it was great to hear how individual homes marked the day in their own ways. Carers Week starts on June 6 th and is another really important date for Barchester, as our carers, like our nurses, are at the heart of all the services we provide. Their dedication, compassion and spirit is what makes the care we deliver in our homes and hospitals so unique. Thank you to all our nurses and carers! Care Awards 2016 Thank you to everyone who took the time to nominate a member of staff for Barchester s Care Awards 2016. The judging process is now underway and the Divisional Winners will be announced in June. The names of the overall winners of each category, including the winners of Barchester in Bloom, will be revealed at a special awards ceremony in October. Help and advice We have been expanding the Help and Advice section of our website and adding to the free resources available. As well as the handy e- guides, which cover topics such as Nutrition for Older People and Paying for Care, we have added five dementia factsheets. These could be useful for you or someone you know who is affected by dementia or looking into care options. Got to: www.barchester.com/help-and-advice Volunteer at a Barchester home Volunteers can have a huge impact on the lives of people living in Barchester homes and hospitals. They bring something truly special by giving up their free time to help others and break down barriers between homes and the wider community. Everyone has their own reason for choosing to volunteer and no two volunteers are the same. The way people volunteer varies a lot too. Befriending, running activities, taking people on outings, helping in the kitchen there are so many ways to make a difference. If you are thinking about volunteering or know someone else who is, please do speak to the General Manager or Hospital director at your local Barchester home/hospital who will be able to discuss this with you and guide you through the application process, should you choose to proceed.

Barchester s Charitable Foundation Barchester s Charitable Foundation gives grants of up to 5,000 to groups and individuals in England, Scotland and Wales. They award about 150 grants a year, with the aim of helping improve the lives of older people and other adults living with disabilities. Below is one example of a project which has received a grant from the Foundation this year. These grants are made possible by the fantastic fundraising that takes place in Barchester homes, hospitals and offices. Musical sessions bringing generations together An expanding community project called Musical Generations received a 2,880 grant from Barchester s Charitable Foundation to help with running costs after their sessions proved the amazing power of music in breaking down barriers between young and old. The project, run by Centrestage Communities in Kilmarnock, involves weekly sessions where up to 180 older people from the community spend an afternoon enjoying music, movement and refreshments with volunteers of all ages but the most special relationships are those built between the younger people and their older guests. Below is a picture of Agnes and 14 year-old volunteer Jessica, who are a great example of the work being done by this charity. The pair are now firm friends, visiting each other outside of the sessions, but if it weren t for Musical Generations, they might never have met and built such a strong bond! Foundation Week 13 th 19 th June is Foundation Week when Barchester homes and hospitals will be holding events and arranging activities to raise money for the Foundation. As always, every pound raised will be matched by Barchester and we hope that with everyone s support we can raise more money than ever.
