January 2018 Page 2 5918 Express Dear Brother Knights and Ladies, Our crisp new wall calendar tells us that the Christmas season is over. We are settled down, the decorations are put away and we are still watching football games. Our liturgical calendar tells us we are in the second week of Ordinary Time. This means the liturgy follows the ordo or regular prayers. It refers to all that aren t included in the major season of Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter. Two Sunday s ago, the Gospel was about John s account of the call of the first disciples. This reading brings up the subject of discipleship. What makes a person a follower of Christ? What does discipleship entail? In the gospel account, two of the disciples of John the Baptist followed Jesus. This of course means they did more than trail Him as someone special: they accepted him for what the Baptist declared him to be, the lamb of God. The basis of their reaction to Jesus when they first encountered him was an act of faith in Him. Having accepted him as having this special role in God s plan of salvation for the Jews, they then went a step further. They decided to throw in their lot with him, to join him in his mission, to become his disciples and followers. Briefly stated, it means that they agreed to let him be the influence in their lives that God wanted him to be: He is calling us, they thought, and we will answer that call. He is calling us to be something with him, they went on, and we will be, and do, whatever he asks of us. And that decision determined the course of their lives and activity. The Christian goes through the same process. He first makes his act of faith in Christ, acknowledging that he is sent by God to reveal God to him (and all men). And he decides that he will submit himself to Christ and obey him. While experiencing the extremely cold weather it comes to mind that only in a month we will be entering the season of Lent. Easter will soon be on us. This ought to be the time to think about this holy season and how we will prepare for it. Will we be ready for it? Vivat Jesus! Deacon Tom Leonard M. Another fundraiser we re considering is through Portillo s Hot Dogs, through which the restaurant donates a percentage of sales to our council on a specified day and time. Stay tuned (and stay hungry) for further information. We delivered 24 children s coats to the West Suburban Community Pantry on January 13. Thank you Steve Wagner for ordering and bringing the two cases of coats to the pantry. The people at the pantry are extremely grateful for our donation, especially since we ve been having some very cold days this winter. We ll be planning more events for this year with possibilities including: Stations of the Cross during Lent, a Deaconate Sunday celebration in April, Fifth Sunday Rosary. the Global Wheelchair foundation, a blood drive, a KC Family Corporate Communion, a Memorial Mass, assisting a needy family in the community, Easter Egg Hunt, selling pro-life puzzles, a membership table at Hospitality Sundays, and Wayne Messmer s play Damien. Our council needs to recruit a few more members and get a few more insurance members and we ll be well on our way to achieving Star Council.
