The Expressive Portrait WORKSHOP: LOCATION: Shelton, Washington DATE: June 17-28, 2019 COST: $1,400 tuition (Tools, living expenses, transportation not included) WELCOME! Thank you for your interest in attending our Two Week Portrait Sculpture Workshop! Students who have attended these workshops enjoyed the total immersion in sculpture: In the studio they learn the anatomy of the head and face, and work from models on two portrait studies. They also receive individual advice and professional insights geared toward improving their ability to realize lifelike portraits. And like a family in Tuscany, at midday we all sit down to a delicious meal to relax and refuel. In a dining room surrounded with windows looking out on the farm, we talk of art and life, sharing stories, information, and dreams and a good portion of laughter. The following pages provide important information about the workshop, including an introduction, instructor and curriculum information, travel and budget information and a registration form. After reading through the enclosed materials, please return your registration form with your deposit as soon as possible, as the class is limited to 10. Upon receipt, we will review your application and notify you promptly of your acceptance. Additional information on the enrollment process is provided near the back of this information packet. Thanks again for your interest, and I hope to see you in Shelton in June!

INSTRUCTOR Cristina Mikulasek has studied the figure as an anatomist and creative artist for over 40 years. She has exhibited in many shows and won numerous awards and commissions for her expressive figures and portraits. Her works are included in collections throughout the US and Europe. In 1998, Ms. Mikulasek was awarded the prestigious Alex Ettl prize by the National Sculpture Society for notable achievement in American sculpture through a distinguished body of work. Ms. Mikulasek is also an accomplished craftsman who for 13 years operated a private foundry and learned thoroughly the work of producing fine bronze sculpture. She taught lost-wax casting and figure sculpture at Monterey College, California for several years. Ms. Mikulasek has lived part-time in Italy for nearly a decade, learning to carve marble from local masters. Now most of her time is spent at her studio in Shelton, Washington, where she continues to explore and express the dignity and beauty of the human spirit, using as her vehicle the human figure, in all of its breathtaking strength, grace and sensuality. WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS Participants are preferred to have a certain minimum level of knowledge and practical experience with sculpting and/or drawing a human face, and be highly motivated. The number of participants will be limited to a maximum of 10. SCHEDULE & CURRICULUM Classes will take place from 9am-5pm, Monday through Friday. Classes include approximately 70 hours of instruction and studio work. From 12:30 1:30 every class day, an abundant and nutritious hot lunch is provided. The morning session includes intensive study of anatomy of the head and face, and measurement for portraiture. In the afternoon session we will work from live models to create portrait heads and busts. Subjects also covered include: 1. Considerations of clothing, hair, gesture 2. Building armatures for different types of portraits, and different finish materials 3. Ways to make a sculptured portrait seem to breathe, and feel like the subject to those who know him or her best. LOCATION OF THE WORKSHOP The workshop will be held in a large studio with good natural light on a farm near the town of Shelton, Washington. Shelton is located in western Washington, about 20 miles northwest of Olympia, 1-1/2 hours west of Seattle and two hours north of Portland, Oregon. It is considered the gateway to the Olympic Peninsula, which is one of Nature's treasure chests, full of spectacularly beautiful mountains and rivers and wild coastal scenes. HOUSING Housing opportunities in the Shelton area are many and varied, from camping on the farm (during summer) to staying at the world-class Casino hotel (with indoor pool, gym, and restaurants) fifteen minutes drive from the studio. There are also cottages and B&B s available nearby. The price range for 2 weeks is about $250 (camping or RV) - $950 (Casino hotel). Enrolled students will be sent a list of lodging possibilities in the area.

BUDGET FOR THE WORKSHOP What follows is an extremely rough budget for workshop participants based on past workshop expenses. Actual expenses may end up being more or less than the figures presented here. The following budget is presented only to provide participants with a ballpark idea of the overall costs involved. Tuition and Materials Fee $1,400 Roundtrip flight to SEATAC $400 Rental car for two weeks Hotel/motel near studio TOTAL ROUGH BUDGET OF PAST WORKSHOPS $200 Studio is 5 miles from town. Shared car is possible. $700 Sharing the cost with roommates can dramatically reduce your expense. At your request, we can help to house you with other students requesting a roommate. $2,700 This Total figure may be more or less depending on one s air fare, choice of housing, eating choices, and optional expenses such as tours or souvenirs. Flight Expense. Please note that the above flight expense is based on flights from New York to Seattle. Prices may be more or less expensive, depending on your location. Flights to Seattle may also be less expensive if purchased well in advance, or by checking discount airfare sites on the internet. CLIMATE The weather in July ranges from warm, sunny days to cool and cloudy or rainy; temperatures range from 65F 75F. Nights can be cool. In the Northwest it can rain at anytime. Or it can be gloriously sunny and warm, like it was when we took the photo on the previous page.
