A.M.D.G. July 15, 2016 Dear U of D Jesuit Families: Greetings from the High! Many blessings to you and your family as the summer progresses! Our mission of forming men who will be for and with others for the greater glory of God extends beyond the classroom. Campus Ministry has exactly this mission in mind. From retreats to liturgies to prayer services to student leadership experiences, we offer opportunities for the spiritual growth of your son an essential component to the formation received at our school. Information on our Campus Ministry programs follows. RETREATS The Academy Days of Reflection and the Freshman Days of Reflection are mandatory and provide our students with an opportunity for spiritual reflection and community building. Information and forms for these retreats will be sent via your son s homeroom, or they can be found on in the Retreats section of the Campus Ministry page at our school website. For Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors the retreats are voluntary, but no less important. We offer the opportunity for Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors to pre-register to reserve a spot for one of scheduled dates. Retreat pre-registrations can be handled conveniently online. You will find the pre-registration link in the Retreats section of the Campus Ministry web page. Please note that, if you are not already logged on to Cub Community, you will be asked to do so to complete your pre-registration. Parents and students can preregister for retreats but you must be logged in to Cub Community to do so. You will be prompted to log-in to start, if not already logged in. (Please note that pre-registration will only hold a spot temporarily. Students must complete a short self-reflection that can also be filled out online at the Campus Ministry web page. Once a student is accepted to attend the retreat, participant packets will be distributed via homeroom mail or the Campus Ministry website.) Please note the following: In addition to Kairos, Seniors also have the opportunity to attend the Silent Retreat. In addition to the Junior Retreat, Juniors also have the option of registering for the June 2017 Kairos Retreat. (continued) 8400 S. Please note that the school does not charge students to attend its retreats. This policy was put into effect for one primary reason: we want to ensure that there are absolutely NO barriers to student participation in this vital aspect of life at our school. However, the retreats do cost money. For those of you who are able, we would appreciate it if you made a tax-deductible donation toward the retreat your son will attend. Additionally, if you would like to sponsor another student, it would be greatly welcomed. You will receive a receipt for your donation through our development office. If your son is unable to attend a retreat, please understand that we are unable to refund your donation. The cost of each retreat is listed below but any dollar amount you are able to provide is helpful. Please send your donations marked Retreats to the attention of the Business Office. In order to properly account for donations, please donate by check. Checks can be made payable to U of D Jesuit. (Continued)
Retreat Costs 2016-2017: Academy: $25.00 Freshman: $25.00 Sophomores: $85.00 Juniors: $140.00 Seniors: $185.00 (Kairos) $165.00 (Silent) LITURGY, PRAYER, AND WORSHIP Many opportunities exist for your son to celebrate Mass and to participate in the prayer life of the school. A simple daily Mass is celebrated every morning in the chapel at 7:25 a.m. Many students say that it is too early, but there are many young men in the halls at this time in the morning. Some organizations and sports teams will attend mass on a designated day. Please encourage your son to attend. It is not an exclusively Catholic celebration; exposure to and brief reflection on the Word of God can really help get the day off to a positive start. Throughout the year there will be school-wide masses held in the gym. These are all school events and attendance is mandatory. More importantly, full, active participation is encouraged and expected. Liturgy is an action carried out by a community of believers. Though everyone is not expected to believe the same dogmas, we encourage participation in this because it expresses our unity as a school, commitment to our mission, and realization that we are indeed in the company of Jesus. For all of these celebrations, students will be given opportunities to be trained and commissioned as lectors, ushers, servers, gift bearers, and Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist. Again, your encouragement from home will reinforce our offering these options here. Please contact the Campus Ministry Office to discuss opportunities for your son to get involved during Mass. Finally, during the seasons of Advent and Lent your son will have the opportunity to participate in a reflective reconciliation service during his Theology class time. In the past, this has been reported as a very positive experience for the students, regardless of their religious affiliation. Students have the option to participate in sacramental reconciliation, which, simply put, gives everyone a chance to be still and know God. STUDENT PASTORAL TEAM GET INVOLVED! WITH CAMPUS MINISTRY: The Student Pastoral Team assists Campus Ministry by providing a student voice in the leadership of retreats, prayer services, and liturgies. It is open to any student wanting to grow in his relationship with God and wanting to help nurture the spiritual life of U of D Jesuit. Meetings of the team take place on Tuesday mornings from 7:25 7:50 a.m. ( bi-weekly?) and will resume on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 in Room 139. Alternatively, your son can express his interest in helping out by visiting our Student Pastoral Team section on the Campus Ministry web page. (Continued)
