Secretary (Terry Lamb) It was noted that Jean Kruse s name was omitted from the Executive Committee attendance list. After the November Executive Committee meeting, Jim Vancura polled the members of the Committee concerning paying for an ad in the corridor Entrepreneur. All members were favorable to the expenditure. The amount up to $700 for an ad in the Entrepreneur was approved..jean Kruse moved and Greg Christensen seconded a motion to approve the minutes as revised per the comments above. Motion carried. B. Marketing Jim Burns reporting The new member recruitment reception went over well. The food was very good and the program was well received. There were 13 potential new members, 19 SCORE members and 9 guests present. The printing of the brochures to be used with presentations has been put on hold temporarily. The small brochures are being used. They seem to be popular and are informative about the local chapter. Jim Burns is still trying to recruit members to be at the table at SAM s Club on the 3 rd Thursday of each month. Anyone interested should contact Jim. Four banks were visited last month to be briefed on the benefits of using SCORE counseling for their clients.
Page 3 of 8 C. Technology Jim Vancura Reporting Jim Green is working to get Constant Contact improved. The Office Portal has been cleaned up some. Much of the bulk of the general information has been moved to background pages with links to them. There has been an effort made to address problem areas; insure links are operational, remove out dated documents and generally cleanup of the site. Members are encouraged to take a look at the Portal and make constructive suggestions for improvements. D. Old Business The last few years the Chapter has committed to have SCORE advertising banners displayed on 3 rd Street in CR for a month each year. To get this done for 2014, there needs to be a commitment made to Cedar Rapids. Jean Kruse moved that we spend the $250 to display the banners again this coming year. Jim Burns seconded the motion. Motion carried. We plan to display the banners the same weeks that SBA has for their small business recognition weeks (May). For information a list of current officers is again shown at the end of these minutes. E. New Business Since the next scheduled Chapter meeting date falls on New Year s Day, the next meeting will be delayed until January 8, 2014 It was brought up that the transfer of client data from Webit to the new system will only occur if the client has a valid email address. There are a few clients who do not have an email address and they aren t planning on getting one. The result is that these client s files WILL NOT BE AUTOMATICALLY TRANSFERRED to the new data file. No one is sure if National will provide a work around or not. One suggestion that would work is to HAVE THE CLIENT S MENTOR PUT THE MENTOR S EMAIL ADDRESS ON THE CLIENT S 641 (ONLY FOR SPECIFIC CLIENTS WHO DO NOT HAVE AN EMAIL). This shouldn t cause any problems since there shouldn t be any critical messages sent to this email address. The email can be changed back to the generic format after the data transfer is completed. Pat Gosnell has a member s listing that is available to mentors. If you want one, please contact Pat. Jean Kruse had the most counseling and volunteer hours for November. Congratulations again Jean. F. Evaluation Kathy McArtor Reporting Kathy is continuing to go through the member records to get things in order. It is time again to read the Code of Ethics, sign the back page and send that page back to Kathy. G. Iowa City Chapter Task Force Greg Christensen Reporting Greg has done most of the research on getting the IC chapter active. There is high interest in IC to get the Chapter back in operation with local mentors in place. Greg continues to meet with IC organizations to coordinate this effort.
H. SBA Report - Carolyn Tonn Reporting The new member s reception was well done. Carolyn will provide added info at main meeting. Training & Membership Committee There is an effort to do a better job of tracking training status of new members. o Need mentors who are training new members to input training status data regularly. o Keeping track of this data electronically is faster than paper. The paper format still seems to be more accepted. o Need to better identify a process to assign co-counselors to specific new members. D. SBA Report There will be some loan changes for veterans starting June 1 st. Fees will be eliminated. The Vet must show his or her DD-214 to qualify. F. Workshops G. Technology See Executive Committee minutes for detail H. Iowa City Task Force PROGRAM The program today was presented by Troy Miller who is now associated with the Gazette Company. Troy is an attorney and was the CEO of Amana for a number of years. Troy brought three of his people with him who are committed to making a transition in the way news is reported. 1. The Gazette Company is the most unique media company in the country. The Gazette was a family owned business in TV and Newspaper for 130 years. The family decided to create an ESOP in 1986. [An employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) is an employee-owner scheme that provides a company's workforce with an ownership interest in the company.] The ESOP had no transactions until now. When the last CEO retired he moved the Gazette companies ownership to the ESOP. This was the first time the FCC had a case where a TV station was not owned by an individual or a company where one person was responsible for the company. They had to work around this to get approval. 2. The company has continued to operate the same way it has for the last 130 years. A reporter hears of or finds out about a story. The reporter goes out and gets an interview. If possible, photos are taken to enhance the story. The reporter writes up the story. The interviewees are not given a chance to review the final story for accuracy or content. The article is routed to an editor who may make changes and assigns a headline to it. The story typically is placed next to an ad. 3. Today s technology has changed everything we do and how we do it. Information is readily available to everyone in real time by way of social media and fast communication media. Anything may be written by many individuals concerning the event and sent to the world. Some are opinion and some fact. In the future news information needs to be created differently from the traditional reporting as it exists today. The reporting of news is not about selling advertising. Need to remake the product and provide a community service. Page 5 of 8
Need to think regionally. Traditional methods won t work; need to show intent, have to give interviewees access to review final article, remove editorial function (the writer does his or her own editing and assigns the headline. The story then appears in the media as written under a byline.) The media employees and community need to work as a team and collaborate vs the existing competitive attitude by reporters. Need to show the community that the transition to a regional approach is working and the people involved see the BIG PICTURE. The paper and TV programming should not be simply short articles and photos. Today s readers and listeners don t really get much depth or understanding out of what they see and read. The new approach would provide depth on a regional basis. Schools of Journalism are still teaching the existing approach to reporting even though some deans realize it is not the way of the future.
