Rena Hughes Dave Kobernuss Karin Tuthill Program The program was presented by Vicki Gillen, the founder of the Kicks for Kids Foundation which was established in 2010. Kicks For Kids Foundation was created to assist children in need of financial assistance when participating in martial arts within Rome, NY and surrounding areas. It has recently been expanded to include donations to the Copper City Soccer Program. To apply for financial assistance, an application is prepared along with a tax return and pay stub(s). Some small amount is required. Every three months, information must be updated. On average, 10-15 children receive assistance. 80% of the students are between 4 and 10 years old. 20% are between 16 and 65. Spectators are encouraged. Life Skills This program consists of more than physical martial arts programs. It instills a variety of life skills which includes: Discipline through class drills, group exercises which teaches learning with peers; employing a kid s martial arts curriculum. Confidence trying something new takes courage and shows children how to try new things. Focus developed when practicing new things and the martial arts curriculum. Improved attention span is learned. Ability to defend themselves against bullies who may try to force them into doing something that is wrong. This can be learned through a free bully prevention seminar for children which teaches them a few tools to use when approached by a bully. Contact Information Location: 2051 N Madison Phone: 339-3928 Website: www.kfkfoundation.org A Rotary Minute The following Rotary History bites are from the book presented to Rotarians attending the 2013 Rotary Institute for Learning. Title of the book is, A century of service by David C. Forward. This will be ongoing. Rotary s Administrative gearworks The first Rotarys were bound together by philosophy rather than bureaucracy. Each club decided who qualified for membership, how often it met, and even designed its own Rotary club emblem. The first National Association of Rotary Clubs convention changed administration to a central one. Chesley Perry who was the association s first secretary began to develop the organization as an information resource and clearinghouse for Rotary clubs and their members..perry hired Rotary s first employee, Mildred Trosin, in 1912 because of the time and skills required to handle all the details required. A weekly letter had to be prepared to send to all the clubs and more room was needed. Another person was hired to join the staff and they moved to larger offices. In the early years, the association moved between rented offices within the Loop area of downtown Chicago. By 1918, Paul Harris believed that Rotary should move its headquarters to the Chicago suburbs to save money but couldn t convince the others. By the early 1950 s the Secretariat staff had grown so large that a downtown building was too expensive to rent or buy. The RI Board commissioned a search for a permanent building. In the end, the Board chose Evanston, Illinois on Lake Michigan just north of Chicago. At the 1953 Mexico City convention, the delegates approved the choice and development began on an office building that was the hub of the Rotary s wheel for more than 30 years. In 1985 Rotary applied for planning permission to build an extension but restrictions were so heavy that the Board and staff considered other alternatives. Rotary purchased the American Hospitals Supply Company s international headquarters on Sherman Avenue in the heart of Evanston. Other Community Events & Activities Rome Community Theater Those crazy ladies in the house on the corner February 12, 13, & 14 at 7:30PM and February 16 at 2:30 PM What do you do when you have three geriatric sisters as patients and all they want to do is sit at home and talk to one another all at the same time? You move another person in with them. At least, that's what Doc Lomax does when he has a new nurse needing a place to live a nurse with a secret, that is. The hard part is convincing the sisters they need a roomer. In no time, however, Nurse Jean has them planning parties, pulling Halloween pranks and wearing jogging suits while they race each other to the corner. But when the nephew shows up with a plan to sell the family house, things seem to get complicated again, especially with Christmas just around the corner. As details emerge of the events leading up to the accident, the lives of the well-to-do Bernaschi family, privileged and detached, will intertwine with the Ossolas, struggling to keep their comfortable middle-class life, in ways neither could have expected. Dino Ossola (Fabrizio Bentivoglio), in dire financial straits, anticipates the birth of twins with his second wife (Valeria Golino). Meanwhile, Dino's teenage daughter's relationship with hedge-fund manager Giovanni Bernaschi's playboy son complicates an already tricky social dance of status, money and ambition. This Weeks Rotary Foundation Minute Comes to you Courtesy of Neil McBeth According to The Rotary Foundation s annual report India now is Polio-Free!! The eradication of polio in India was a monumental task, demanding an extraordinary effort by all levels of government and partners involved. Backed by more than 100,000 Rotarians across the country, Rotarians helped to ensure maximum support for everything from National Immunization Days to mop-up immunization rounds Besides placing two drops of vaccine into children s mouths, Rotarians along with health workers, helped change the hearts and minds of community leaders opposed to immunization to allow children to be vaccinated. Rotary s advocacy with government and business leaders, along with Rotarians generous contributions pushed forward the polio endgame plan aimed at certifying global eradication of the disease by 2018. Your contribution to Polioplus will enable this to happen! Weekly Rotary Foundation Minute January 1, 2015 by Neil McBeth, PDG Maternal and infant mortality rates are high in East Africa, mainly due to inadequate health care, the HIV/AIDS crisis, and poverty. In response, The Rotary Foundation and Aga Khan University have connected to provide scholarships to nursing and midwifery students at Aga Khan s campuses in Nairobi, Kenya; Dares Salaam, Tanzania; and Kampala, Uganda. The first class of 24 students graduated from the two-year program in February with either a Registered Nurse or Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree. While in school, the students also volunteered at Rotary service projects and worked with Rotary members who shared their expertise to help the students become community leaders. Your contribution to The Rotary Foundation allows this happen! From The Rotarian February 2015 Permanent exiles by Brad Webber Every 10 minutes a baby is born without a state and no citizenship in any country. Crises in Syria, conflicts in South Sudan, Central African Republic, and many other nations are producing new generation of refugees and asylum seekers. They are longterm exiles who are spending years, even decades in makeshift refugee cities with their families. The number of people forced from their homes by war and conflict has surpassed 50 million for the first time since the end of World War II, when the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was created. Working to help this population of refugees are some of the graduates of the Rotary Peace Centers. (Nearly 900 Rotary Peace Fellows have graduated from the program

since its beginning in 2002) These humanitarians provide basic food and shelter, job training, education, and other support so these refugees can rebuild their lives.
