This month s dinner is May 19. Food Drive collections are on the 2nd Tuesday of every month. We collected $67.00 for The Rome Rescue Mission at the May 10 meeting. 50/50 Don Schlueter s ticket was picked and but he did not draw the queen of hearts to win the pot of $$2.00 or the Jack to win half. Rotarian honoree Rotarian Frank Barrows (Ft. Stanwix) will be honored at the Beeches for a Breakfast meeting of the Rome Chamber of Commerce. The breakfast will be held on June 9 at 7:00AM and the cost is $35.00 each. They request that some Rome Rotary members attend this. Sustaining member donations Bill is asking for these donations to be given before April 11 when he has surgery or during the month of May when he will be back.
Longtime Rotarian and our friend Kay De Simone is in the Rome Memorial Hospital at 1500 N. James St, Room 219 after sustaining a fall at home. It would be a good thing to send her cards. Her spirits are low. Congressional Candidate appearances Make a note of the following dates: May 10, May 17, May 31, and June 7. There will be Congressional candidate appearances at these meetings. Tickets at $15.00 each are required to attend these meeting which include lunch. Program coordinators would like members to start thinking about a part to play in the upcoming Canalfest. Canalfest will be held on August 5, 6, and 7 this year. Program Today s program was presented by Rome CST Superintendent Jeff Simons. Jeff told us that he will be taking a position as Superintendent with the East Greenbush, NY School District for the 2016-17 school year. It is located near Albany. The new Rome CSD Superintendent will be Peter Blake who is currently the principal at RFA. The Budget information for 2016-17 The Rome CSD has achieved the accolade, School in good standing in a letter from the NY Commissioner of Education which means that the all schools in the district are stable. Rome is a high needs, low wealth district and we now have a good bond rating. Capitol Projects When Joy elementary completes its renovations in August, it will draw to a close a $38 million dollar project. 95% of the money from the project costs will be carried by the state. The Strough Upper Middle School project will begin in the Summer of 2016. The cost will be 25 million dollars. The Rome Catholic building will be leased along with the use of Ft. Stanwix Elementary building to house students while the renovations go on. After the completion of the project, the Ft. Satnwix building will be sold. The feeling was expressed by a Rotary member that it be sold to a Rome area person(s) in order to ensure that proper maintenance or care will be upheld. College Credit program Many of our graduating seniors who go on to college enter at the Sophomore level due to this program which offers 25 accredited courses at RFA. 91% of the graduating RFA student go on to college. Jeff mentioned that it is a boon to have the MVCC Rome campus here for community student to attend. Statistics The current budget is $110,432,816.00 There will be a 2.97% increase which will bring the coming year s budget to $113,711,979.00, shoing an increase of $3,279, 163.00. The district tas levy is going down but the tqxes in Rome will b e increased to 95 cents per $1000.00 of assessed property value. 62% of what it costs to run the district comes from state aid. 24% comes from local property taxes. Star program assistance is 6%. Most of the money needed for the district goes directly to instruction of students and teachers. The programs Rome CSD will maintain alll current programs. $6.5 million in our reserves will be used to continue these. State aid is improving for the Rome district due to work spearheaded by Governor Cuomo. Unique programs such as ou early childhood programs, Math tournaments, Robotics team, Cybersecurity coutses, CEAL program, advanced manufacturing and new courses in AP Phyusics an dadvanced Chemistry will continue.

Music from the I-90 Bop Connection Band. Their hard-driving sound is descended from artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Rich and Sal Nistico. The members of I-90 have individually performed with such jazz legends as Chuck Mangione, the Count Basie Orchestra and Maynard Ferguson. Youth Service Leadership of PDG Herb Jerry, Rotary District 7150 is actively involved in Interact with District Chair Jenny Doan: A club for young people in their community or school. Rotaract with District Chair Tom Taylor: this club gives young people exposure to new cultures and customs and promotes global understanding and peace. Students spend time in another country living with different host families and attending classes at the local schools. Rotary Youth Leadership Award with District chair Larry Richardson: An intensive training program for young adults ages 14-30. The program usually involves seminars, camps, or workshops organized by Rotarians and held over 3-10 days. Leaders of sponsor Rotary clubs and districts should make sure their Interact clubs get the recognition they deserve by verifying that they qualify for a Presidential Citation. First, ensure that the Interact club status is active in Rotary's database by checking the Listing of Club-Sponsored Organizations report in Rotary Club Central. If a sponsored club is not listed, submit the Interact Club Certification Form by 1 March. Then, verify by 15 April that your Interact clubs have qualified for the citation. You'll find a list of sponsored Interact clubs in the Club & District Administration section, under Reports. Also from the April Rotary District 7150 Newsletter Rotary districts mobilize to support survivors of Ecuador, Japan quakes After a series of three earthquakes -- two in Japan and one in Ecuador -- killed hundreds of people, injured thousands, and caused billions of dollars in damage late last week, Rotary members in those regions have created disaster relief funds to help survivors. In Ecuador, the powerful 7.8-magnitude quake that struck Saturday night has killed more than 400 people, with 2,500 injured. Those figures are expected to rise. Rotary District 4400 established a service fund to raise money for relief efforts. Contact District Governor Manuel A. Nieto Jijon for information on how to donate. In Japan, District 2720 created a disaster relief fund after two quakes hit southwestern Japan, causing landslides and killing dozens. ROTARY FOUNDATION CENTENNIAL The Rotary Foundation turns 100 in 2016-17! Our Foundation stands at the forefront of humanitarian service, having supported thousands of projects to provide clean water, fight disease, promote peace, and provide basic education as well as the historic project dedicated to eradicating polio worldwide. Polio update: US. Govt 2016 news flash The United States Congress approved a total of $228 million for the 2016 federal budget to support the global effort to eradicate polio. The funding represents a $10 million increase over the level of funding approved in fiscal year 2015. Rotary s Polio Eradication Advocacy Task Force for the United States leads our efforts to inform the U.S. government and other funding sources of the urgency and benefits of supporting the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. The Rotarian April 2016 issue Global grant project is growing tall in Korea Paul Engleman Tuesdays at 1:00PM student from the Andong Yeongmyeong School wait to join Rotarians from the clubs in Andong to work in a greenhouse. They plant seeds and harvest lettuce leaves. The leaves are then taken to a restaurant owned by another Rotarian. From the money that they earn, the students invest in more seeds and equipment. The Rotarians are mentors at the school through training projects for students with autism and intellectual and emotional disabilities. The project began in 2014. The students learn crop cultivation, beginning with the fundamentals of growing lettuce indoors and the learn to package and transport crops culminating in selling vegetables to businesses around Andong. The project between the school and the Andong Agriculture Technology Center is supported by a global grant from the Rotary Foundation. The Rotarians funded the construction of the horticultural facilities where the training takes place, financially support the instruction provide by faculty at the school and volunteered as mentors for the students and business consultants and monitors for the project. The aim is to provide students with a foundation to pursue careers in horticulture and gain financial independence. Not only is the program a challenge for the students to learn new things, the grant application process involves learning for the members of the Rotary Club of Andong-Central. Global grants were a new concepts for us and no one in the club had ever done anything like this before. The program has continued beyond the initial grant. Rotary member Sin states that we are working to expand the program beyond students and provide vocational training to adults with disabilities.
