The Origins of Father s Day The campaign to celebrate fathers in the United States did not initially receive the same enthusiasm as Mother s Day, perhaps because, as one florist explained, fathers haven t the same sentimental appeal that mothers have. And, contrary to popular belief, this special day was not established as a holiday in order to help greeting card manufacturers sell more cards. On July 5, 1908, a West Virginia church sponsored the nation s first event explicitly in honor of fathers, a Sunday sermon in memory of the 362 men who had died in the previous December s explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah, but it was a one-time commemoration and not an annual holiday. The next year, a Spokane, Washington woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, one of six children raised by widower, William Jackson Smart (pictured), tried to establish an official equivalent to Mother s Day for male parents after hearing a church sermon honoring Mother s Day. She went to local churches, the YMCA, shopkeepers and government officials to drum up support for her idea, and she was successful: Washington State celebrated the nation s first statewide Father s Day on June 19, 1910. Slowly, the holiday spread. In 1916, President Wilson honored the day by using telegraph signals to unfurl a flag in Spokane when he pressed a button in Washington, D.C. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge urged state governments to observe Father s Day. Today, the day honoring fathers is celebrated in the United States on the third Sunday of June and this year, Father s Day falls on June 17. In other countries especially in Europe and Latin America fathers are honored on St. Joseph s Day, a traditional Catholic holiday that falls on March 19. Health Corner Getting a sufficient amount of quality sleep can be difficult for many, but a few changes can have a significant impact, according to the Mayo Clinic. Much of the requirement for getting a good night's rest revolves around controlling the environment in which a person is sleeping and developing routines that aid a person in transitioning from awake time to sleep time. A big part of training the body to sleep better involves having a consistent sleep schedule. Ideally, a person will go to sleep and wake up within an hour of this set schedule each day while ensuring that there is time for at least seven hours of sleep or more. For those that find it hard to stick to a bedtime, focus on waking up at the desired time even if you stay up late to help reinforce that part of the cycle first and make yourself tired for the next night. An often overlooked area for good sleep is what happens during the daytime, and one helpful change could be adding extra physical activities into the daily routine. Engaging in games, exercise or even just a good walk helps a person fall asleep faster and deeper at night but shouldn't be done too close to bedtime to avoid being overly energized. Daytime naps, while they can be beneficial, should be limited to 30 minutes and taken earlier in the day to avoid disrupting that set sleep schedule. Similarly, eating big meals or drinking a lot of alcohol right before bed can create disruptions in the sleep cycle. Finally, the environment itself can be crucial for falling and staying asleep, and this means making the room cool, dark, and quiet. After setting the thermostat to lower itself a couple of degrees shortly before bed, focus on eliminating sources of light and noise in the bedroom. This can include turning off the TV or computer screen, hanging up light-blocking shades, and using earplugs and face masks.

Dear Residents, Families, Friends and Staff, I have some wonderful news to share. We have hired a Personal Expressions Director. Her name is Roiee Dunham. She will be starting on Sunday, June 3rd. I am so excited for her to join our team. Roiee comes to us from our Carlton Davis community. She has spent the last year in Davis as their Bus Driver and activities assistant. She has some great activities that she will bring Friday, June 1 to our exciting program. Her energy is contagious. Give her some time in June to get 10:00 Shopping: Target (FD) settled. I plan on having a social to meet Roiee 10:30 Current Events (GG) and our other mangers in late June. 1:15 Music of Burl Ives (PE) Roiee, Welcome to Team Sacramento. 3:30 Happy Hour: Sweet & Low Melody (CPS-LR) Summer has officially arrived! The warm weather is here and I think it is going to stay. Summer still continues to be my favorite season of the year. There is nothing better than waking up to blue skies, birds singing and the sun on your face. To me, this is such a great way to start the day. With that being said, if summer is here then the 4th of July is right around the corner. I hope you all can come to our annual Family Independence BBQ, on Tuesday, July 3rd. This is one of our favorite parties of the year. There will be lots of great food, entertainment and we will meet in between the communities to continue the celebration with live music and a wonderful fireworks show at dusk. All residents, families, staff and their families are invited. Thank you all for continuing to brighten my days. Happy Birthday Marilyn Monroe! Resident of the Month June 2018 Willis Bill Courtney Bill was born as the only child to Willis and May Courtney in San Francisco, California. He has always resided in California since being born and moved to Sacramento when he was nine years old. However, Frank Sinatra said it best and Bill agrees that he left his heart in San Francisco, his favorite city in the world. After marrying his beloved late wife Shirley, they welcomed to the world and their family three beautiful children, a daughter and two sons. Bill attributes the birth of his children as being his favorite life experience thus far. Although Bill was employed with the State of California Department of Water Resources for over 35 years, in his free time you could find him enjoying the leisure of golfing alongside his beautiful bride or vacationing in Hawaii, one of his favorite places to travel. It would come as no surprise to learn that one of his most notable accomplishments is competing and winning the Japanese & American Flyer Club Tourney for Golf. Bill believes that in life a good philosophy to live by is always keep them laughing. He enjoys spring the most which is why his favorite thing about Sacramento is the beautiful trees. When not outdoors can be found inside the comfort of his apartment watching anything John Wayne related! When asked who he would want to have dinner with he replied with a smile, my wife, 15 years ago. Please welcome Bill to our community!

Building the Case for Group Fitness Classes When did exercise become something we had to do or should do, rather than something we did because we enjoyed it? When we were kids, most of our physical activity revolved around playing games with kids in the neighborhood and organized school and community sports teams. Sure, the fitness was a payoff, but the real benefit was continued motivation and the chance to bond with others in our age group. As younger adults, we found community sports leagues, and even group fitness classes at local gyms to help keep up motivated to stay fit. As we age, however, it just seems that we have fewer and fewer opportunities to participate in group fitness classes. Some of the benefits of group exercise include: A social and fun environment if we can have fun while we exercise, we re more likely to continue to do it. Our Live 2 B trainers keep participants engaged and motivated throughout the class. Safe and effectively designed workouts Live 2 B Healthy exercises are specifically designed to tackle the issues that the aging face such as loss of balance, mobility and muscle tone. When taking a Live 2 B Healthy class, you know that we will cover all the important areas for you and some you may not have even realized were important. Accountability factor When you participate in a group fitness class, there is always lively conversation in the group. You will be missed if you don t attend a class. Don t be surprised if one of your neighbors knocks on your door to check in with you if you miss a class. A workout that requires no prior knowledge or experience Many people find themselves intimidated by the complexity of the fitness equipment, especially the computerized pieces. Attending a group fitness class, led by a certified personal trainer, will ensure that you are getting the most benefit out of the time you spend in class. You will also be provided with modifications for specific limitations. u www.live2bhealthy.com u
